These Example Characters Take Inspiration from Characters in the Legend of Zelda Franchise and Are Not Intended to Be Accurate Recreations of the Said Characters These example characters take inspiration from characters in the Legend of Zelda franchise and are not intended to be accurate recreations of the said characters. Just some easy archetypes or templates to inspire characters of your own and showcase what kind of characters can be made in this world within the ruleset. The format is Name: Race, Class (Archetype), Background. And then notes about possible variants if any. Link: Hylian, Paladin (Oath of the Crown), Folk Hero. You could make a case for any of the martial classes for a “Link” character. Champion or Battle Master can play up the swordplay physical skills. Hunter or Monster Slayer Ranger could accentuate the ability to get along in the wild and take on a variety of dangerous monsters. To me Paladin fits the idea of a hero chosen by the gods and guardian spirits to save the land and its people. Devotion works well for most versions, Ancients can work for a “Link” that has a stronger connection the Great Fairies, Vengeance works for a hero that is after a Purah: Sheikah, Artificer (Artillerist), Archaeologist. Her specific villain or villainous group, and Crown with the Eldritch Cannon can be fluffed as ancient tech, Robbie Soldier background can be like a Hyrule Warriors “Link” would be the same but a Battle Smith Artificer with his that starts off as a knight in training and becomes a construct companions looking like Guardian Scouts. champion of the royal family and Hyrule Kingdom. Zelda: Hylian, Sorcerer (Divine Soul), Noble. This feels pretty straight forward, the goddess Hylia reincarnates as a mortal and in doing so provides the mortal form with powerful innate magical abilities. Other decent option would be Life or Light Clerics, or for a slightly darker spin Celestial Warlock. Ganon: Gerudo, Warlock (The Fiend Patron), Criminal. This is a great opportunity for an anti-hero character striving for redemption or can be used for the villain of your story. Conquest or Oathbreaker Paladin can work as well. Sheik: Sheikah, Monk (Way of Shadow), Urban Bounty Hunter. Again fairly easy, Sheik is a ninja. Assassin Rogue could take the character down a darker path. Revali: Rito, Ranger (Hunter), Outlander Daruk: Goron, Barbarian (Path of the Totem Warrior, Bear), Folk Hero Mipha: Zora, Cleric (Tempest Domain), Noble 1 Urbosa: Gerudo, Bard (College of Swords), Noble. ⁄8 Eldritch Knight Fighter or Bladesinger Wizard could also work. Impa: Sheikah, Fighter (Samurai), Soldier Midna: Twili, Sorcerer (Shadow Magic), Far Traveler Lana: Hylian, Wizard (Evocation), Sage. Conjuration Wizard is a solid variant if you want to focus on the summoning aspect of her character. Volga: Dragonborn (Fire), Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline), Mercenary Veteran. Highly recommend Elemental adept to make his fire more dangerous, and Dragon hide for the Cha boost and Claws. If you prefer a more Martial Volga, Eldritch Knight Fighter could work but I recommend the Dragonborn Racial Feats and Elemental Adept. .

The Journey of a Hero: Musical Evocations of the Hero’s Experience in The Legend of Zelda Jillian Wyatt In fulfillment of M.M. in Music Theory Supervised by Dr. Benjamin Graf, Dr Graham Hunt, and Micah Hayes May 2019 The University of Texas at Arlington ii ABSTRACT Jillian Wyatt: The Journey of a Hero Musical Evocations of the Hero’s Experience in The Legend of Zelda Under the supervision of Dr. Graham Hunt The research in this study explores concepts in the music from select games in The Legend of Zelda franchise. The paper utilizes topic theory and Schenkerian analysis to form connections between concepts such as adventure in the overworld, the fight or flight response in an enemy encounter, lament at the loss of a companion, and heroism by overcoming evil. This thesis identifies and discusses how Koji Kondo’s compositions evoke these concepts, and briefly questions the reasoning. The musical excerpts consist of (but are not limited to): The Great Sea (Windwaker; adventure), Ganondorf Battle (Ocarina of Time; fight or flight), Midna’s Lament (Twilight Princess; lament), and Hyrule Field (Twilight Princess; heroism). The article aims to encourage readers to explore music of different genres and acknowledge that conventional analysis tools prove useful to video game music. Additionally, the results in this study find patterns in Koji Kondo’s work such as (to identify a select few) modal mixture, military topic, and lament bass to perpetuate an in-game concept. The most significant aspect of this study suggests that the music in The Legend of Zelda reflects in-game ideas and pushes a musical concept to correspond with what happens on screen while in gameplay.

I'll pick up part two of a more story oriented journal here, right-handed blue-hearted style ... WARNING: Unmarked spoilers will appear in the comments. Yeta's transformation into Blizetta is the payoff. It's a gorgeous fight in HD, and the creepy organ work suits it perfectly. So is this King Zora's mansion? I just noticed that the goat portraiture is from inside the house, but pictures of the City in the Sky? Continuing from my last post, while the second leg of the Mirror shard segment doesn't directly involve Link's charges in Kakariko, it does involve Colin's father. Sustained effort to maintain the initial heroic motivation hanging by a thread ... but in tact. What is he talking about btw? ToT = Sealed Temple..

Game Narrative Review ==================== Your name (one name, please): Mostafa Haque Your school: New York University Your email: [email protected] Month/Year you submitted this review: December 2017 ==================== Game Title: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Platform: Nintendo Switch/Wii U Genre: Action-Adventure Release Date: March 3rd, 2017 Developer: Nintendo EPD Publisher: Nintendo Director: Hidemaro Fujibayashi Game Writer: Akihito Toda Overview Deep inside an ancient shrine, the Eternal Hero of Hyrule awakens to a familiar voice, calling out across time and space. A century of slumber may have muddled his mind, but there is one thing Link is still certain of. Princess Zelda calls for aid, and neither the great Calamity nor death itself will keep her Champion from her. Despite being around for over thirty years, The Legend of Zelda series continues to engage audiences with its latest installment, Breath of the Wild (BotW). Using a carefully sculpted world, interlinking low-level systems, and non-sequential exploration of the Monomyth, BotW manages to transfer ownership of authored story moments to the players themselves – integrating carefully designed narrative progression with the type of emergence at which open world games excel. Characters • Zelda – Fiercely independent, inquisitive, and dutiful, the franchise’s eponymous princess returns as the deuteragonist of Breath of the Wild. Unable to completely control the magical powers granted to her as the avatar of the goddess Hylia, Zelda resorted to studying and utilizing ancient technology to combat the inevitable return of Calamity Ganon. A stark contrast to her saintlier incarnations, this version of Hyrule’s princess is initially portrayed as skeptical towards her people’s faith – often to the point of agnosticism - despite, or perhaps because of, her alleged role as a divine vessel.

  • Queering an Icon: the Legend of Zelda and Inclusive Diversity
Queering an Icon: The Legend of Zelda and Inclusive Diversity Kyle Schrader Classical Studies I. Introduction: The Legend of Zelda and Queer Theory When analyzing media for structures and communications that inform and construct personal identity, it is always of extreme importance to focus on the main character of relevant stories, films, shows, and video games. For video games in particular, the main character serves as the player’s interactive avatar with the game world, a stand-in for themselves that serves as their contextual point for navigating the experiences within the game. In their work Toxic Geek Masculinity in Media, Anastasia Salter and Bridget Blodgett identify the consistent use of white male avatars in video games to restrict the ability of non-white, non-male, non-heterosexuals to properly identify with their liaison into the game worlds. This is an extremely valid criticism of the game industry at large, but one of their primary examples leads to a major point of contention.i In tracing the lineage of white male protagonists in video games, the authors of Toxic Geek Masculinity set Link from The Legend of Zelda series firmly in their sights as the stereotypical white, male, blonde hero with a princess to save; part of the strain of straight white male characters that fail to represent all gamers equally and, in fact, actively push those outside the archetype away from the medium.ii Their analysis of Link and the tropes of protagonists in video gaming ignore the nuances of the communities surrounding such characters and how interaction with the art and game themselves can help to alleviate these concerns, though it is through these communities that the games and characters are disseminated to the public.

Characters do not appear only in games, they migrate from one medium to another. They are independent from any medium in particular: a character does not require a specific medium to come into existence. Authoritative forces try to shape the overall interpretation of circulating characters transmedially in comics, television series, films, games and more through different venues of control, such as authorship, canonisation and ownership or intellectual property. This study addresses the struggle for interpretive authority by explaining

  • (Re-)Balancing the Triforce: Gender Representation and Androgynous Masculinity in the Legend of Zelda Series
ISSN: 1795-6889 www.humantechnology.jyu.fi Volume 15(3), November 2019, 367–389 (RE-)BALANCING THE TRIFORCE: GENDER REPRESENTATION AND ANDROGYNOUS MASCULINITY IN THE LEGEND OF ZELDA SERIES Sarah M. Stang York University Canada Abstract: The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most beloved and acclaimed Japanese video game franchises in the world. The series’ protagonist is an androgynous male character, though recent conversations between Nintendo and players have focused on gender representation in the newest title in the series, Breath of the Wild. Considering these discussions, this article provides an analysis of Link, the protagonist and player character of The Legend of Zelda series. This analysis includes a discussion of the character’s androgynous design, its historical context, official Nintendo paratextual material, developer interviews, and commentary from fans and critics of the series. As an iconic androgynous character in an incredibly successful and popular video game series, Link is an important case study for gender-based game scholarship, and the controversies surrounding his design highlight a cultural moment in which gender representation in the series became a central topic of discussion among players and developers. Keywords: video games, feminism, gender, Legend of Zelda, Nintendo, androgyny. ©2019 Sarah M. The Linguistics of Zelda Examining the possible conlang clues and linguistic history of the various Hyrulian civilizations Baron Dipitous, dLLC 2021 (March 7, 2021) About Me ● “Librarian gamer” ○ Lore wikis, D&D, game lore & language ○ Twitter: @BDipitous ● Conlanger since 2016 ○ Tɛkɾɪd ○ Almost Home (https://anchor.fm/banner-studios) ○ Ju-Klɪb (https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1VnR4FZhnjJzKa6GrKLRyafF5vsxebRW_MjqVGefpVR c/edit?usp=drivesdk) ○ 2nd conlang for another Banner project (b/c why not?) ● Zelda fan since about 2000 ○ Happy 35th to the series! Research Question What is the linguistic history of the Hyrulian peoples, and how does it relate to the established Zelda timeline? I am not the first to look into the linguistics of Zelda games, but to my knowledge each study on the subject focuses on one specific language or aspect of a game. I'm hoping to provide a broader view of the linguistic data available in the series as a whole (and perhaps inspire similar studies for other franchises). Two-Fold Focus ● Development of Hylian over time ○ Compare the designs, placement, & use of each variation of the Hylian alphabet, the “common tongue” in the game worlds ○ Collect and analyze each bit of linguistic data I could find in the Zelda series ● Languages “of the Wild” ○ Closely examine the utterances of the various species in Breath of the Wild to see what, if any, unique linguistic traits each race shows ■ Gerudo ■ Goron ■ Hylian ■ Korok ■ Rito ■ Sheikah (ancient and contemporary) ■ Zora Disclaimers ● I recognize these languages & cultures are created for player enjoyment & immersion. Also, it is clear that any overarching “lore” or “world history” is simply made up as each game is released.
