SCENE TWO

(MOMBI, a witch enters)

MOMBI Well, here I am, Old Mombi in Oz, and here is a good chance to try my new magic powder, and then I can tell whether that crooked sorcerer has fairly traded secrets or whether he has fooled me as weckedly as I fooled him!!!!!

(MOMBI looks in her magic bag)

And here it is - The Powder Of Life. And now let us see if it works. He didn't give me much of it, but I guess there's enough for two or three doses. Are you ready? Could be you! How about it? Ahhhhh A Pumkinhead. I think I'm going to turn this pumpkin in to life.

(MOMBI sprinkles powder of life on JACK and casts a spell on him.)

Now, what was that spell? Abracadabra? No, no. Open sesame! That's not it. Ahhh. Yes. Weaugh! Teaugh! Peaugh!

Musical Cue #2 -- Song: Weaugh! Teaugh! Peaugh

WEAUGH! SAY A SILLY SOUND. TEAUGH! JUMP AND DANCE AROUND. PEAUGH! FALL DOWN ON THE GROUND. WEAUGH, TEAUGH, PEAUGH!

(The spell doesn’t work.)

WEAUGH! LISTEN TO ME NOW. TEAUGH! BE WHAT I SAY NOW. PEAUGH! MAGIC WORDS I'VE SAID, AND THEY BETTER PUT SOME LIFE INTO THIS PUMPKINHEAD. WEAUGH, TEAUGH, PEAUGH!

(The spell works. JACK comes to life.)

JACK Don't yell like that! Do you think I'm deaf?

MOMBI He lives! He lives, he lives

(DOROTHY, hiding from MOMBI is discovered when she is heard laughing)

You naughty, sneaking, wicked girl. I'll teach you to spy on me, to learn my secrets and to make fun of me.

DOROTHY I wasn't making fun of you. I was laughing at that pumkinhead. Look at him. Isn't he a picture?

JACK I hope you are not reflecting on my personal appearance.

MOMBI What do you know anyway? Your head is large, that's true. But isn't it a little empty?

JACK Well, that is hard to tell. For although I know I'm tremendously bright, I am not yet aware of how much there is in the world to find out about. It will take me a little time to discover whether I am very wise or very foolish.

DOROTHY Don't worry Jack, it takes some people a lifetime and they still don't know.

JACK But how does a person know if he is alive. How do you know that you're alive, or she's alive? If she is alive.
