INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of The study

Literature is a reading material or basic material that can be used as a reference in the writing of scientific papers. literature as a reading material used to carry out intellectual activities. often limiting to those who are considered to have artistic or intellectual value. According to some poets in the world 'Literature' can analyze such as;

"The difficulty of literature is not writing, but writing what you mean; does not affect your readers, but to influence it exactly as you want it to. "And can be interpreted Literature is an art form that describes human life. The characters are the most interesting in a novel.

The uniqueness of the characters in a novel always want to make people want to know what the real figure. The characters in the novel provide another perspective on everything related to human life, the literary point of view for something - Semi (1988: 8) says,

"Literature is a form and a creative work whose object is human and its life uses language as being . "-Ahmad Badrun (1983: 16) says," Literature is an art activity that uses language and other symbolic lines as a tool, and is imaginative‖.

Wellek and Warren (1963: 22) says that "also state that the term literature seems best if we limit it to the art of literature, that is, to imaginative literature. Literature is also produced by imagination of the author. Literature is not just a document of facts, it is not just the collection of real events though it may happen in the real life. Literature can create its own world as a product of the unlimited imagination.‖

1 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

The literary work is two types, either a creative writing or the study of what is written.

Writing is a creative work that values man as a creator and raises his existence above the world of subsistence, but that work we call "study" is the way (by which) another literate person sees and analyses the work in question. The literary work, as a work of art, can be a drama, a fiction, essays, biography or journalism and so on. Sometimes the author deals with an imaginary world such as in Drama is the specific mode of fiction represented in performance. Novels is a relatively long work of narrative fiction, normally in prose, which is typically published as a book. and Poetry is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language—such as sound symbolism, and metre—to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.

Novel as one of literary works consists of some elements of fiction. The elements are generally divided into two major categories, which are the intrinsic and extrinsic elements. According to Nurgiyantoro (2010:23), intrinsic element is the elements that directly build the literary work itself. These elements will be found by a reader in reading a literary work, such as novel. The intrinsic elements, among the others, consist of plot, character, theme, background, point of view, and figurative language.

This description is about the main characters of the novel, we know that the novel is part of literature. Character is the most appealing element in a novel. The uniqueness of the characters in a novel always makes people eager to know what the real figure are. The main characters can be more than one in the novel.

The writer is the novel the wonderful wizard of Oz, because the story is different from the other novel. There wizard in the novel and some of Dorothy’s very unique companions.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Novel

Novel is a form of literary work in the form of prose which has intrinsic and extrinsic elements. Or the definition of a novel is a novel that is a form of a literary work, a novel is a story or fiction in the form of writing / words and has an intrinsic element and also extrinsic elements. Novel is the literary from in which many us encounter stories.

There are so mainly three important branches of literature: novel, drama, and poetry. One of the important branches is novel. Novel can we get every where, especially bookstore or supermarket. sometimes novel describe about fairytale like imagination of the author although something fictitious. And we can get novel but the contents like a collection of tips or motivation for life. But becomes as something that people who read the novel may understand same like the daily life.

Nurgiyantoro(2010: 10) suggests that the novel is a work of fiction built by the building elements, is intrinsic elements and extrinsic elements. The novel is also defined as a prose-shaped essay that contains a series of stories of one's life with others around him by accentuating the character and nature of the offender. The novel is a type of literary work written in narrative form that contains a certain conflict in story of the characters in the story.

There are some kinds of novel, they are: action-adventure, crime, detective, or fairytale: Action adventure fiction is features physical action and violence, often around a quest or military-style mission set exotic or forbidding locales such as jungles,

5 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

deserts, or mountains. Example: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Crime is an unlawful act punishable by a state or other authority. Example: The Woman In White by Wilkie

Collins. Detective is a subgenre of crime fiction and mystery fiction in which an investigator or a detective—either professional, amateur or retired—investigates a crime, often murder. Example: Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Fantasy is a genre of fiction set in a , often without any locations, events, or people referencing the real world. Its roots are in oral traditions, which then became literature and drama. Example: The Feminime Middlebrow by Nicole Humble. Fairy tale is an opus for telling a moral message to a child with a fictional story. Example: Cinderella by Grimm.

Adventure fiction is a genre of that has adventure, an exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger, as its main theme. Adventure stories almost always move quickly, and the pace of the plot is at least as important as characterization, setting and other elements of a creative work. Fantasy fiction features stories set fanciful, invented worlds, an alternate and more fanciful version for our own world, or in a legendary, mythic past. Fantasy fiction stories generally involve magic, mystical elements, or creatures.

2.2 Character

One of the most important aspects of the novel is the main character. The definition of a character or character is an inner nature that affects all thoughts, behavior, manners, and character possessed by humans or other living beings. The characters in this

6 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

novel are not as confusing as the characters in real life, a short novel is a work of art, so a selective character in a novel is not like we do in real life or daily life.

Main character is a character that has a dominant role and that most often appear in the story. the most presented character in the story. He or she is the most telling character, either as subject or objects of the conflict. Even on particular stories, main character is always present in every scene and conflict. The presence of main character is very dominant because he or she is the figure who is always present in the story and also affects the development of the conflict and climax in the story. The main character in a work of literature is also known as the protagonist. The protagonist is not necessarily the "good guy," just as the antagonist is not always the "bad guy." An antagonist simply works against the protagonist within the context of the story, and this conflict is usually what drives the plot of a narrative forward.

Characters are people in the novel referred to as characters, each character has its own personality, We judge them by what the author says about them and on the basis of what they do and say. Character appearance can greatly affect other major elements in literary works, such as themes, settings and tones. Another thing to keep in mind is that the characters are part of a wider pattern. The characters in the story can be divided into some categories based on the point of view ; major and minor character, protagonist and antagonist character.

The characters are part of a border pattern: they are members of society, and the author’s distinctive view how people related to society will be reflected in the presentation of every character.

7 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

2.2.1 Main character

The Main Character is a channel in which the audience experiences the story subjectively. The Main Character may be a Character Perseverance who must obey his determination or Change the Character that changes his nature in an attempt to resolve his problem. A story has a central character that acts as the focus of the audience's emotional attachment to the story. The main character is the most important thing of the story or who is the most important of the story. You can decide who the character does not.

Characters can be divided into categories based on the point of view taken; the main and small characters, the protagonist and the antagonist character, round and flat characters, dynamic and static characters, distinctive and neutral characters. Main Character is an important element in literature. Various characters in the story are made by author's creativity.

Author creates the characters according to their tastes: for example, the professions, status and attitudes. Every character has a different part in the story. The differences make the character have many types.

2.2.2 Protagonist and Antagonist Character

There are two order important terms to keep in mind of description people:

Protagonist and Antagonist. The protagonist is a major role in the story and as the main character in the story. This character always addresses the issues that must be resolved.

The protagonist does not necessarily have to be someone whose ability can not be done in

8 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

the reader's corner. a Protagonist is considered to be the main character or the main character in a novel, play, drama, story or poem. The person who plays the first part, the main actor is the main character.

The protagonist is at the center of the story, makes the key decisions, and experiences the consequences of those decisions. The protagonist affects the main characters' circumstances as well, as they are often the primary actor propelling the story forward. If a story contains a subplot, or is a narrative made up of several stories, then the character who is interpreted as the protagonist of each subplot or individual story.

The word protagonist is used notably in stories and forms of literature and culture that contain stories, which would include dramas, novels, operas and films. In those forms the protagonist may simply be the leading actor, or the principal character in the story. More formally, the protagonist, while still defined as a leading character, may also be defined as the character whose fate is most closely followed by the reader or audience, and who is opposed by the antagonist. The antagonist will provide obstacles and complications and create conflict that test the protagonist, thus revealing the strengths and weaknesses of their character.

The Antagonist is a group of characters, institution or concept that stands in or represents opposition against which the protagonists must contend. In other words, an antagonist is a person or a group of people who opposes a protagonist. Some traditional objects used to a number of character (rather than just the main one) in a play, film, etc.

The antagonist must work actively and deliberately against the protagonist. The antagonist must be strong and cruel, the level of strength and cruelty of the antagonist lies in the level of threat he gives to the protagonist. For this reason, the antagonist is the best

9 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

enemy of the protagonist or any other character that opposes the protagonist. In this way, any character that forms the antagonist, can be very evil in a different way.

In this novel there are two figures based on his character, protagonist and antagonist, the protagonist in this novel is Dorothy, Lion, Scarecrow, and Tin Man. where as the antagonist is the evil wizard from the west.

Nurgiyantoro, 2007:178-179),The protagonist is a character who gives sympathy and empathy, and keeps himself emotionally and admired by the reader.

2.2.3 Flat character

Flat characters are two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work. According to Nurgiyantoro (2002:181) says that, ―flat character is a simple character that has only one personal quality. The nature and behavior of this character are flat, monotonous, reflecting only one nature‖.

Unchangeable nature of the flat character is also used as a comparison when the other characters change their behavior. It just has one personality, good or bad personality.

2.2.4 Round character

According to Nurgiyantoro (2002:101) says that, ―round characters is a character in fiction portrayed as a having complex, multifaceted personality. They change as they experience many problem and conflicts.‖ Sometimes, it is difficult to explain about these characters because they do not only have one trait of personality. They also evolved or changed in the story. Usually, changes that occur in a round character are influenced by the conflicts which also experienced the character.

10 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA CHAPTER III

THE DESCRIPTION

In this chapter, there are main characters contained in this novel, namely protagonist. The protagonist is Dorothy and three of her friends Lion, a Scarecrow and a

Tin man. The each main character is analyzed based on the problem. The most important thing to explain here is the main character in the novel and several other aspects found in it.

3.1 Dorothy

Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with , who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife. Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles. There were four walls, a floor and a roof, which made one room; and this room contained a rusty looking cook stove, a cupboard for the dishes, a table, three or four chairs, and the beds. Uncle Henry and Aunt

Em had a big bed in one corner, and Dorothy a little bed in another corner. There was no garret at all, and no cellar--except a small hole dug in the ground, called a cyclone cellar, where the family could go in case one of those great whirlwinds arose, mighty enough to crush any building in its path. It was reached by a trap door in the middle of the floor, from which a ladder led down into the small, dark hole.

When Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could see nothing but the great gray prairie on every side. Not a tree nor a house broke the broad sweep of flat

11 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

country that reached to the edge of the sky in all directions. The sun had baked the plowed land into a gray , with little cracks running through it. Even the grass was not green, for the sun had burned the tops of the long blades until they were the same gray color to be seen everywhere. the house had been painted, but the sun blistered the paint and the rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray as everything else.

When Aunt Em came there to live she was a young, pretty wife. The sun and wind had changed her, too. They had taken the sparkle from her eyes and left them a sober gray; they had taken the red from her cheeks and lips, and they were gray also. She was thin and gaunt, and never smiled now. When Dorothy, who was an orphan, first came to her, Aunt

Em had been so startled by the child's laughter that she would scream and press her hand upon her heart whenever Dorothy's merry voice reached her ears; and she still looked at the little girl with wonder that she could find anything to laugh at.

Uncle Henry never laughed. He worked hard from morning till night and did not know what joy was. He was gray also, from his long beard to his rough boots, and he looked stern and solemn, and rarely spoke.

It was Toto that made Dorothy laugh, and saved her from growing as gray as her other surroundings. Toto was not gray; he was a little black dog, with long silky hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily on either side of his funny, wee nose. Toto played all day long, and Dorothy played with him, and loved him dearly.

12 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Today, however, they were not playing. Uncle Henry sat upon the doorstep and looked anxiously at the sky, which was even grayer than usual. Dorothy stood in the door with Toto in her arms, and looked at the sky too. Aunt Em was washing the dishes.

From the far north they heard a low wail of the wind, and Uncle Henry and

Dorothy could see where the long grass bowed in waves before the coming . There now came a sharp whistling in the air from the south, and as they turned their eyes that way they saw ripples in the grass coming from that direction also.

The house whirled around two or three times and rose slowly through the air.

Dorothy felt as if she were going up in a balloon. The north and south winds meet where the house stood, and made it the exact centre of the cyclone. In the middle of a cyclone the air is generally still, but the great pressure of the wind on every side of the house raised it up higher and higher, until it was at the very top of the cyclone; and there it remained and was carried miles and miles away as easily as you could carry a feather. When these people drew near the house where Dorothy was standing in the doorway, they paused and whispered among themselves, as if afraid to come farther. But the little old woman walked up to Dorothy, made a low bow and said, in a sweet voice: "You are welcome, most noble

Sorceress, to the land of the . We are so grateful to you for having killed the

Wicked Witch of the East, and for setting our people free from bondage."

13 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Dorothy :‖ I am had never killed anything. little old woman :‖See!" she continued, pointing to the corner of the house. "There are her two feet, still sticking out from under a block of wood." Dorothy :"The house must have fallen on her. Whatever shall we do?" Little old women :‖"There is nothing to be done," Dorothy :"But who was she?" Little old women :"She was the Witch of the East, as I said. She has held all the Munchkins in bondage for many years, making them slave for her night and day. Now they are all set free, and are grateful to you for the favor. and as a present I give you these ". Dorothy : ―thank you‖. ―I am anxious to get back to my aunt and uncle, for I am sure they will worry about me. Can you help me find my way?" The Little women :"Then you must go to the City of Emeralds. Perhaps Oz will help you." Dorothy :"Where is this city?" The Little women :"It is exactly in the center of the country, and is ruled by Oz, the Great Wizard I told you of." Dorothy :"How can I get there?" The Little women :"You must walk. It is a long journey, through a country that is sometimes pleasant and sometimes dark and terrible. The road to the City of Emeralds is paved with yellow brick, so you cannot miss it. When you get to Oz do not be afraid of him, but tell your story and ask him to help you. Good-bye, my dear." (The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz,2017:15)

When Dorothy was left alone she began to feel hungry. So she went to the cupboard and cut herself some bread, which she spread with butter. She gave some to

Toto, and taking a pail from the shelf she carried it down to the little brook and filled it with clear, sparkling water. Toto ran over to the trees and began to bark at the birds sitting there. Dorothy went to get him, and saw such delicious fruit hanging from the branches that she gathered some of it, finding it just what she wanted to help out her breakfast.

14 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Then she went back to the house, and having helped herself and Toto to a good drink of the cool, clear water, she set about making ready for the journey to the City of

Emeralds.

Dorothy had only one other dress, but that happened to be clean and was hanging on a peg beside her bed. It was gingham, with checks of white and blue; and although the blue was somewhat faded with many washings, it was still a pretty frock. The girl washed herself carefully, dressed herself in the clean gingham, and tied her pink sunbonnet on her head. She took a little basket and filled it with bread from the cupboard, laying a white cloth over the top. Then she looked down at her feet and noticed how old and worn her shoes were.

She took off her old leather shoes and tried on the silver ones, which fitted her as well as if they had been made for her. Finally she picked up her basket.

"Come along, Toto," she said. "We will go to the and ask the Great Oz how to get back to Kansas again." (The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz,2017:22)

She closed the door, locked it, and put the key carefully in the pocket of her dress.

And so, with Toto trotting along soberly behind her, she started on her journey.

She was surprised, as she walked along, to see how pretty the country was about her.

There were neat fences at the sides of the road, painted a dainty blue color, and beyond them were fields of grain and vegetables in abundance. Evidently the Munchkins were good farmers and able to raise large crops. Once in a while she would pass a house, and the people came out to look at her and bow low as she went by; for everyone knew she had been the means of destroying the Wicked Witch and setting them free from bondage.

15 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

The houses of the Munchkins were odd-looking dwellings, for each was round, with a big dome for a roof. All were painted blue, for in this country of the East blue was the favorite color. And he again started along the road of yellow brick. When she had gone several miles she thought she would stop to rest, and so climbed to the top of the fence beside the road and sat down. There was a great cornfield beyond the fence, and not far away she saw a Scarecrow, placed high on a pole to keep the birds from the ripe corn.

3.2 Scarecrow

Scarecrow is the cornfield keeper to scare/drive the crows. ―I don't have a brain but crows have brains‖ he said. Dorothy leaned her chin upon her hand and gazed thoughtfully at the Scarecrow. Its head was a small sack stuffed with straw, with eyes, nose, and mouth painted on it to represent a face. An old, pointed blue hat, that had belonged to some

Munchkin, was perched on his head, and the rest of the figure was a blue suit of clothes, worn and faded, which had also been stuffed with straw. On the feet were some old boots with blue tops, such as every man wore in this country, and the figure was raised above the stalks of corn by means of the pole stuck up its back.

While Dorothy was looking earnestly into the queer, painted face of the Scarecrow, she was surprised to see one of the eyes slowly wink at her. She thought she must have been mistaken at first, for none of the in Kansas ever wink; but presently the figure nodded its head to her in a friendly way. Then she climbed down from the fence and walked up to it, while Toto ran around the pole and barked.

16 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

When Dorothy came to the scarecrow, Dorothy was surprised to see a scarecrow talking. and it turns out that the scarecrow is not feeling well anymore.

"For it is very tedious being perched up here night and day to scare away crows." said Scarecrow. ‖Th6e Scarecrow could not go down, because the pole stuck in his back. and Dorothy grabbed both arms and lifted the figure from the pole. and the Scarecrow thanked Dorothy for helping her.‖(The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz,2017:27)

The scarecrow asked; what his name was and where he would go. but the

Scarecrow also doesn't know where Emerald City, and who is Oz?. the Scarecrow didn't know and Dorothy was surprised. "Oz is a good witch" said Dorothy. the Scarecrow didn't know anything, he was stuffed, and he didn't have a brain at all. Dorothy apologized to him.

―When the scarecrow asked to join Dorothy to meet Oz, Dorothy invited her. because Dorothy wants the rice field people to get the brain and Scarecrow won't be worse than now. Dorothy understood her feelings, Dorothy apologized to him. and Dorothy will ask Oz to do everything he can for you. The Scarecrow thanks Dorothy with gratefully‖. .‖(The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz,2017:28)

After a few hours the road began to be rough, and the walking grew so difficult that the Scarecrow often stumbled over the yellow bricks, which were here very uneven.

Sometimes, indeed, they were broken or missing altogether, leaving holes that Toto jumped across and Dorothy walked around. As for the Scarecrow, having no brains, he walked straight ahead, and so stepped into the holes and fell at full length on the hard bricks. It never hurt him, however, and Dorothy would pick him up and set him upon his feet again, while he joined her in laughing merrily at his own mishap.

The farms were not nearly so well cared for here as they were farther back. There were fewer houses and fewer fruit trees, and the farther they went the more dismal and lonesome the country became.

At noon they sat down by the roadside, near a little brook, and Dorothy opened her basket and got out some bread. She offered a piece to the Scarecrow, but he refused.

After walking long enough and passing the yellow bricks. they feel tired and want to rest. The Scarecrow led her through the trees until they reached the cottage, and

Dorothy entered and found a bed of dried leaves in one corner. She lay down at once, and with Toto beside her soon fell into a sound sleep. The Scarecrow, who was never tired, stood up in another corner and waited patiently until morning came. When Dorothy awoke the sun was shining through the trees and Toto had long been out chasing birds around him and squirrels. She sat up and looked around her. Scarecrow, still standing patiently in his corner, waiting for her. They left the cottage and walked through the trees until they found a little spring of clear water, where Dorothy drank and bathed and ate her breakfast.

She saw there was not much bread left in the basket, and the girl was thankful the

Scarecrow did not have to eat anything, for there was scarcely enough for herself and Toto for the day. When she had finished her meal, and was about to go back to the road of yellow brick, she was startled to hear a deep groan near by. And they saw what happened there. Just then another groan reached their ears, and the sound seemed to come from behind them. They turned and walked through the forest a few steps, when Dorothy discovered something shining in a ray of sunshine that fell between the trees. She ran to the place and then stopped short, with a little cry of surprise.

3.3 Tin Man

One of the big trees had been partly chopped through, and standing beside it, with an uplifted axe in his hands, was a man made entirely of tin. His head and arms and legs were jointed upon his body, but he stood perfectly motionless, as if he could not stir at all.

Dorothy looked at him in amazement, and so did the Scarecrow, while Toto barked sharply and made a snap at the tin legs, which hurt his teeth.

―Dorothy asked the canned man. "Did he complain?" Tin man complain for more than a year. and he never heard and helped him. Tin men ask to get oil cans. Dorothy immediately ran back to the cottage and found a can of oil, "where do I apply it?" Dorothy said. "Applying it to my neck, on my arms and oiled feet. Tin man said. Until he could move them freely; and he thanked again and again for his release, because he looked like a very polite creature, Tin man said. (The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz:38)

The tin man is a tin man who does not have a heart. The Tin man told the following story: " I was born the son of a woodman who chopped down trees in the forest and sold the wood for a living. When i grew up, I too became a wood-chopper, and after my father died I took care of my old mother as long as she lived. Then I made up my mind that instead of living alone I would marry, so that I might not become lonely.

"There was one of the girls who was so beautiful that I soon grew to love her with all my heart. She, on her part, promised to marry me as soon as I could earn enough money to build a better house for her; so I set to work harder than ever. But the girls lived with an old women who did not want her to marry anyone, for she was so lazy she wished the girl to remain with her and do the cooking and the housework. So the old

19 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

women went to the , and promised her two sheep and a cow if she would prevent the marriage. Thereupon the Wicked Witch enchanted my axe, and when I was chopping away at my best one day, for I was anxious to get the news house and my wife as soon as possible, the axe slipped all at once and cut of my left leg.

"This at first seemed a great misfortune, for I knew a one-legged man could not do very well as a wood-chopper. So I went to a tinsmith and had him make me a new leg out of tin. The leg worked very well, once I was used to it. But my action angered the Wicked

Witch of the East, for she had promised the old women I should not marry the pretty

Munchkin girl. When I began Chopping again, my axe slipped and cut off my right leg.

Again I went to the tinsmith, and again he made me a leg out of tin. After this the enchanted axe cut off my arms, one after the other; but, nothing daunted, I had them replaced with tin ones. The Wicked Witch then made the axe slip and cut off my head, and at first I thought that was the end of me. But the tinsmith happened to come along, and he made me a new head out of tin.

" I thought I had beaten the Wicked Witch then, and I worked harder than ever; but I little knew how cruel my enemy could be. She thought of a new way to kill my love for the beautiful Munchkin maiden, and made my axe slip again, so that it cut right through my body, splitting me into two halves. Once more the tinsmith came to my help and made me a body of tin, fastening my tin arms and legs and head to it, by means of joinds, so that I could move around as well as ever. But, alas! I had now no heart, so that I

20 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

lost all my love for the Munchkin girl, and did not care whether I married her or not. I suppose she is still living with the old women. waiting for me to come after her.

"My body shone so brightly in the sun that I felt very pround of it and it did not matter now if my axe slipped, for it could not cut me. There was only one danger-that my joints would rust; but I kept and oil-can my cottage and took care to oil myself whenever I needed it. However, there came a day when I forgot to do this, and being cough in a rainstorm, before I thought of the danger my joints had rusted, and I was left to stand in the woods until you came to help me. It was a terrible thing to undergo, but during the year I stood there I had time to think that the greatest loss I had known was the loss of my heart. While i was in love I was the happiest man on earth; but no one can love who has not a heart, and so I am resolved to ask Oz to give me on. If he does, I will go back to the

Munchkin maiden and marry her. "Both Dorothy and the scarecrow has been greatly interested in the story of the Tin man, and now they knew why he was so anxious to get a new heart.

After that Dorothy continues her journey to Emerald City with scarecrows and tin man. Tin men want to join them to ask Oz to give him a heart. So the shouldered his axe and they all passed through the forest until they came to the road that was paved with yellow brick.

The Tin Woodman had asked Dorothy .to put the oil-can in her basket. "For," he said, "if I should get caught in the rain, and rust again, I would need the oil-can badly."

3.4 Lion

All this time Dorothy and her companions had been walking through the thick woods. The road was still paved with yellow brick, but these were much covered by dried branches and dead leaves from the trees, and the walking was not at all good. Just when they were walking, came from the forest a terrible roar, and the next time a big lion ran to the road. With one blow from the sole of his foot, he sent the Scarecrow spinning to the side of the road, and then he hit Tin Woodman with his sharp claws. But for the surprised

Lion, he couldn't make an impression on the can, even though Tin Woodman fell on the road and lay still.

Little Toto, now that he had an enemy to face, ran barking toward the Lion, and the great beast had opened his mouth to bite the dog, when Dorothy, fearing Toto would be killed, and heedless of danger, rushed forward and slapped the Lion upon his nose as hard as she could, while she cried out:

"Don't you dare to bite Toto! You ought to be ashamed of yourself, a big beast like you, to bite a poor little dog!" "I didn't bite him," said the Lion, as he rubbed his nose with his paw where Dorothy had hit it.‖ "No, but you tried to," she retorted. "You are nothing but a big coward." said Dorothy.(The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz,2017:47)

The Lion immediately hung his head in shame. Dorothy was surprised at the beast.

All other animals in the forest naturally expect the Lion to be brave, because the Lion is everywhere considered the King of Animals. The Lion learned that if the lion roared so loudly every living creature was frightened and out of the way. Every time the Lion met a man, the Lion became very frightened, but Lion only scolded him, and he always ran away

22 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

as fast as he could. If elephants and and have tried to fight the Lion, the Lion runs away. The lion was a coward, but once a man heard the lion roar they all tried to get away from him, and of course the lion let them go. This is a great sadness for him, and makes his life very unhappy. But whenever there is danger, his heart starts to pound.

―I am going to the Great Oz to ask him to give me some," remarked the Scarecrow, "for my head is stuffed with straw." "And I am going to ask him to give me a heart," said the Woodman. "And I am going to ask him to send Toto and me back to Kansas," added Dorothy. "Do you think Oz could give me courage?" asked the . "Just as easily as he could give me brains," said the Scarecrow. "Or give me a heart," said the Tin Woodman. "Or send me back to Kansas," said Dorothy. "Then, if you don't mind, I'll go with you," said the Lion, "for my life is simply unbearable without a bit of courage." (The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz,2017:49)

Dorothy did not mind inviting Lion to join him to meet Oz to help him get a heart.

So once more the little company set off upon the journey, the Lion walking with stately strides at Dorothy's side. Toto did not approve this new comrade at first, for he could not forget how nearly he had been crushed between the Lion's great jaws. But after a time he became more at ease, and presently Toto and the Cowardly Lion had grown to be good friends.

Born in New York in 1856, L. Frank Baum

had his first best-selling children's book with 1899's

Father Goose, His Book. The following year, Baum

scored an even bigger hit with The Wonderful

Wizard of Oz, and went on to write 13 more Oz

books before his death in 1919. His stories have

formed the basis for such popular films as The

Wizard of Oz (1939) and Oz the Great and Powerful

(2013).

Early Life

Lyman Frank Baum was born on May 15, 1856, in Chittenango, New York. In

1900, Baum wrote one of the most famous works of children's literature, The Wonderful

Wizard of Oz, later known as The Wizard of Oz. He enjoyed a comfortable upbringing as the son of a barrel factory owner who also had some success in the oil business. Named

"Lyman" after an uncle, Baum hated his first name and chose to be called by his middle name "Frank" instead.

Baum's education began with tutors at in his early years. At the age of 12, he went to the Peekskill Military Academy. Baum left the school after a health crisis two years later, apparently suffering from some type of heart condition. Never earning a high

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

school degree, he spent his early adulthood exploring his interest in acting and writing for the stage.

'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'

After stints as a newspaper journalist and businessman, Baum started writing for children in his forties. He had discovered his talent for storytelling from the nursery rhymes and tales he told his four sons from his marriage to Maud Gage. The pair had wed in 1882, and Gage was the daughter of famed suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage. In 1897,

Baum published his first collection for young readers , which was illustrated by Maxfield Parish. He soon followed up this work with the hugely popular

Father Goose, His Book. This book became the top-selling children's title of 1899 and featured illustrations by W. W. Denslow.

In 1900, Baum introduced readers to a fantastical land filled with witches, munchkins and a girl named Dorothy from Kansas in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The story of Dorothy's quest to find her way home, accompanied by a tin woodsman, a scarecrow and cowardly lion, proved to be quite popular. Baum wrote about his intentions in the book's introduction: "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written solely to pleasure children today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heart-aches and nightmares are left out."

Two years later, Baum transformed his fairy tale into a successful Broadway musical. He re-imagined a popular culture figure around this time with The Life and

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Adventures of Santa Claus (1902). In 1904, Baum returned to Oz with the first sequel to his beloved work, The Wonderful .

In addition to his Oz books, Baum wrote more children's titles under an array of pseudonyms. He wrote the Aunt Jane's Nieces series as Edith Van Dyne among other projects. In 1910, Baum moved his family to Hollywood, , where he worked to bring his stories to the big screen. The first movie versions of his Oz tales were made as short films.

Death and Legacy

In declining health, Baum underwent gall bladder surgery in 1918. He spent the last year of his life confined in bed, never fully recovering from the operation. Just days before his birthday, Frank Baum died on May 6, 1919, at his home in Hollywood,

California. was the last title he wrote for the Oz series.

While the nation mourned this great storyteller, Baum's characters lived on.

Several other authors, including , were hired to continue to create new Oz adventures. Twenty years after his death, a new film version of his classic tale appeared on the big screen. The Wizard of Oz, starring , Bert Lahr, Jack

Haley, and Frank Morgan, debuted in 1939. The Wizard of Oz went on to become one of the most watched movies in cinematic history.

Baum's stories continue to fascinate and enchant to this day. Writer Gregory

Maguire has written several books exploring the lives of some of Baum's most famous

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

characters. His 1995 book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the , was used as the basis for the popular Broadway musical Wicked. On the big screen, James

Franco played the who ends up as the Wizard of Oz in 2013's Oz the Great and

Powerful. His character must tangle with forces of good and evil, which are manifested in the film by Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz.

SUMMARY

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, children’s book written by L. Frank Baum and first published in 1900. A modern fairy tale with a distinctly American setting, a delightfully levelheaded and assertive heroine, and engaging fantasy characters, the story was enormously popular and became a classic of children’s literature. However, by the late

20th century the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz had become more familiar than the book on which it was based.

Dorothy is a young girl who lives in a one-room house in Kansas with the care- worn Uncle Henry and Aunt Em; the joy of her life is her dog, Toto. A sudden cyclone strikes, and, by the time Dorothy catches Toto, she is unable to reach the storm cellar.

They are still in the house when the cyclone carries it away for a long journey. When at last the house lands, Dorothy finds that she is in a beautiful land inhabited by very short, strangely dressed people. The Witch of the North informs her that she is in the land of the

Munchkins, who are grateful to her for having killed the Wicked Witch of the East (the house having landed on the witch), thus freeing them. The Witch of the North gives

Dorothy the silver shoes of the dead witch and advises her to go to the City of Emeralds to see the Great Wizard Oz, who might help her return to Kansas. The witch sends Dorothy off along the with a magical kiss to protect her from harm.

On the long journey to the Emerald City, Dorothy and Toto are joined by the

Scarecrow, who wishes he had brains; the Tin Woodman, who longs for a heart; and the

Cowardly Lion, who seeks courage. They face many trials along their route, but they overcome them all, often because of the Scarecrow’s good sense, the Tin Woodman’s

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

kindness, and the bravery of the Cowardly Lion. At last they reach the Emerald City, where of the Gates outfits them with green-lensed glasses and leads them to the Palace of Oz. Oz tells them that no favours will be granted until the Wicked Witch of the West has been killed.

The companions head to the land of the Winkies, ruled by the Wicked Witch of the

West. The witch sends wolves, crows, bees, and armed Winkies to stop them, all to no avail. So she uses her Golden Cap to summon the . The Winged

Monkeys destroy the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman and cage the Cowardly Lion, but they bring Dorothy and Toto to the witch, who enslaves Dorothy. The witch wants

Dorothy’s shoes, which she knows carry powerful magic. She contrives to make Dorothy trip and fall, so she can grab one of the shoes. An angered Dorothy throws a bucket of water at the witch, who then melts away to nothing. Dorothy frees the Cowardly Lion and engages the help of the now free Winkies in repairing and rebuilding the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow, and the friends .

Oz does not summon them for several days, and, when he does admit them into his presence, he seems reluctant to grant their wishes. Toto knocks over a screen, revealing that Oz is only a common man. However, he fills the Scarecrow’s head with bran and pins and needles, saying that they are brains; he puts a silk-and-sawdust heart into the Tin

Woodman; and he gives the Cowardly Lion a drink that he says is courage. He and

Dorothy make a balloon to carry them out of the Land of Oz, but the balloon flies away before Dorothy can board; Oz leaves the Scarecrow in charge of the Emerald City.

Dorothy kissed her friends goodbye and wished them well, and then clicked her heels together and said "Take me home to Aunt Em!" She ended up in the Kansas prairie,

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

the silver shoes having fallen off in the desert. She ran towards her Aunt Em who was astonished to see her and asked her where she had been. Dorothy replied she had been in

Oz and was glad to be home.
