579 - 587 Kingston Road Welcome The purpose of this exhibition is to explain the emerging proposals for the redevelopment of the site to the North of the Kingston Road, at 579-587 Kingston Road, SW20 8SA. The former Manuplastics site, currently vacant, situated between Kingston Road and the Railway line, has the potential to provide small office units and homes. The project team has been working with Merton Council’s planning department with the intention of submitting a planning application by the first quarter of next year. The purpose of this exhibition is to explain the emerging proposals and give you an opportunity to ask questions to the project team. Street Violence amongst Young Men in London: everyday experiences of masculinity and fear in public space A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Michael Whelan School of Sport and Education Brunel University 30th April 2013 Abstract Arising out of widespread concerns that incidents of street violence amongst young people in the UK were spiralling out of control, this research draws on feminist deconstructions of the public -private space divide to emphasise the importance of a social constructionist perspective on street violence; street violence as it is experienced, understood and constructed by young people. Methodologically this research combines ethnography with Critical Discourse Analysis in what has been referred to as critical ethnography (Fairclough, 2001). Adopting a practitioner research approach within a primarily street based youth work setting, accounts were drawn from a range of sources, including interviews and participant observation with youth workers, young people and local public figures. This study draws out the implications for young men’s subjective experiences of the inner city streets near where they live, focusing on the construction of masculinities in the context of political pressures and institutiona lised discourses of young people. The young men in this research experienced uncertain and often fearful public spaces in which the ability to construct a credible propensity for violence was an essential part of a successful masculine identity. Air Quality Action Plan For the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames In fulfillment of Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 Local Air Quality Management JULY 2016 SUMMARY This document revises the Council’s current Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) that was published in 2005 and outlines the actions we will take to prevent deterioration of, and ultimately improve, air quality in the Borough between January 2016 and December 2021. Our medium term plan, ‘Destination Kingston’ sets out our aim of making Kingston fit for modern living - an attractive place to live and work. This plan supports a number of the Destination Kingston 2015-2019 themes and objectives, with clean air and a healthy environment being a fundamental requirement for our communities to live, work and grow. The AQAP also supports a key element of the Our Kingston Programme, established in July 2015 and setting out how the Council will deliver the vision set out in Destination Kingston. Actions to improve Air Quality sit well within Community Outcome 7 established within the programme, which seeks a ‘sustainable borough with a diverse transport network and quality environment for all to enjoy’. Air quality assessments undertaken by the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames identified that the Government's air quality objective for annual mean nitrogen dioxide and daily mean particulates (PM10) were not being met within the Borough (as with most of London) by the target dates. As a consequence, the Council designated an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) across the whole of the Borough and produced an Air Quality Action Plan in recognition of the legal requirement on the Council to work towards air quality objectives; as required under Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 and the relevant air quality regulations. -

Housing, Credit and Brexit Ben Ansell∗ Abstract Dozens of articles have been drafted attempting to explain the narrow vic- tory for the Leave campaign in Britain’s EU referendum in June 2016. Yet, hitherto, and despite a general interest in ‘Left Behind’ commentary, few writ- ers have drawn attention to the connection between the Brexit vote and the distribution of British housing costs. This memo examines the connection be- tween house prices and both aggregate voting during the EU referendum and individual vote intention beforehand. I find a very strong connection at the local authority, ward, and individual level between house prices and support for the Remain campaign, one that even holds up within regions and local authorities. Preliminary analysis suggests that housing values reflect long-run social differences that are just as manifest in attitudes to immigration as Brexit. Local ‘ecologies of unease’ (Reeves and Gimpel, 2012) appear a crucial force behind Brexit. My acknowledgements and thanks go to Jane Gingrich for the provision of local economic and housing data. 1 1 Introduction If there is one saving grace of Brexit for the British higher education system it is a boom of Brexit studies that began pouring forth as the dust settled on June 24th 2016. Most scholars have coalesced around an understanding of Brexit that to some extent mirrors that implicit in Theresa May’s quasi hard Brexit strategy - Brexit was caused by both economic and cultural forces, with opposition to the European Union based on concerns about immigration and of declining cultural and social status rather than economic deprivation or actual migration levels per se (Kaufmann, 2016).
