DIZIONARIO DEI FILM WESTERN A cura di Mario Raciti Fonti Dizionario Morandini 2008 Mymovies.it Film.tv.it Dedicato agli amici di Farwest.it A Accidenti, che ospitalità!

chapter 9 The Ranown Style: Mapping Textual Echoes Lucy Fife Donaldson flm begins with long shot of a distinctive rocky landscape, made up of A huge, rounded boulders sticking up out of the parched earth. Distant snowy peaks appear faintly in the background, under a clear blue sky. Music provides an accompaniment, a minor refrain dominated by brass and backed by a persistent hollow-sounding kettledrumbeat. Credits appear, a crudely shaped yellow typeface made to look as though it is fashioned from rock or wood. After a minute or so, a small fgure on a horse emerges from among the rocks and the camera pans steadily to trace his movement through the terrain. The fgure proceeds to ride across this precarious environment, picking his way through winding paths among the rocks and eventually towards the camera. This description fts the opening moments of not one but two flms directed by Budd Boetticher: Ride Lonesome (1959), and Comanche Station (1960). Indeed, the similarities of place, style and mood are so close in these frst few minutes that they could almost be the same flm. Watching the beginning of either flm may evoke recognition of the other. Moreover, to watch one with knowledge of the other creates an enriched experience, beyond expectation or the pleasures of familiarity. The openings are formally and narratively spare but acquire density when considered in concert. The contiguity in ways of situating character, signaling relationship to genre, and opening the narra- tive constitutes not just a parallel but also an overlap. Between them, these flms acquire layers that underline or thicken certain qualities, illuminating the shared sensibilities of the flms.

Introduction to American Radio Collection, 1931-1972, Collection 256 The American Radio Collection, composed of 514 reel-to-reel tapes, is a valuable piece of American social and cultural history. Tapes in the collection cover the early years of commercial broadcast radio through its golden years to the decline of network radio in the early 1960s. Today commercial radio aims its programs at specific audiences, listeners with different interests in music, politics, religion, and sports. News, commentary, and call-in- shows try to win loyal audiences to this “niche programming,” as it is sometimes called. Today, broadcast radio rarely seeks to appeal to a broad audience of varying ages, genders, ethnicities, occupations, or geographic locations. Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companionis a rare live broadcast aimed at a national audience but it attracts only a small audience, largely white and middle class.
