Information 2017 Green Lake Road Closure, and Irwin Lodge Road Parking Restrictions
A landowner has gated the Green Lake Road (NFSR 826.1D) at his property boundary above Lake Irwin near Crested Butte in the Gunnison Ranger District because he disputes that there is a public right- of-way.
Members of the public have historically accessed Green Lake from this road. However, the road is not a National Forest System Road as it crosses the private land. Any right-of-way that exists through the private property would belong to the public.
The Forest Service is exploring ways to restore public access through the private property. Our intention is to work with landowners, Gunnison County and other interested parties to find a solution. To avoid conflicts with the private land owner, it is suggested that you select another trail in the area until this issue is resolved.
Road Access: There are no other roads that provide access to Green Lake.
The following are National Forest System hiking trails near Lake Irwin:
Scarp Trail (NFST) 421 or Ridge Trail (NFST 419) near the Irwin Lodge Road Dyke Mountain Trail (NFST 838) Irwin Lake Trail (NFSR 370, 370.1A).
