Here we review and prove some facts about norms we use throughout the course

1 Norms

We begin by recalling some basic facts about norms. Definition 1. k · k : Rn → R is called a if the following hold

• (absolute homogeneity) kαxk = |α| · kxk for all α ∈ R and x ∈ Rn • ( ) kx + yk ≤ kxk + kyk for all x, y ∈ Rn • (definiteness) if kxk = 0 then x = ~0

If the last condition does not hold we say that k · k is a semi-norm.

We note some immediate consequence of this definition. Lemma 2. If k · k : Rn → R is a norm then k~0k = 0 and kxk ≥ 0 for all x ∈ Rn.

Proof. The first fact follows from the fact that absolute homogeneity implies

k~0k = k0 · ~0k = |0| · k~0k = 0

and the second follows from the fact that triangle inequality and absolute homogeneity imply

k0k = kx − xk ≤ kxk + k − xk = 2 · kxk .

Now for every norm there is a natural induced given as follows.

1.1 Norm Properties

Here we provide a variety of properties of norms. First, we show that a generalization of Cauchy Schwarz holds in any norm.

n n Lemma 5 (Cauchy Schwarz). For a norm k · k : R → R, it’s dual norm k · k∗, and all x, y ∈ R we have

Proof. If either x = 0 or y = 0 then the claim is trivial. Otherwise we have

Applying the same to (−x)>y we have the desired result.

The dual norm occurs shows up naturally in solving unconstrained minimization problems involving the norm. For example in Chapter 5, we will consider computing steps which are the result of solving the following optimization problem:

1.2 Examples

Here we provide some examples of norms and their dual.

1.3 Norms induced by PSD Matrices

First we consider norms induced by positive definite matrices. Recall that symmetric A ∈ Rn×n is positive semidefinite (PSD) if an only if x>Ax ≥ 0 for all x ∈ Rn and positive definite (PD) if and only if x>Ax > 0 for all x 6= 0. With this definition in hand we define the following norm and prove it is a norm. √ n×n def > Definition 7. For any symmetric PSD matrix A ∈ R let kxkA = x Ax where A is PSD.

Lemma 8. If symmetric matrix A is PSD then k · kA is a semi-norm if A and if it is PD then k · kA is a norm.

Proof. Note that clearly k · kA obeys absolute homogeneity in each case. Further, note that since A is PSD it has a square-root, i.e. there is a unique matrix A1/2that is symmetric, PSD, and obeys that (A1/2)(A1/2) = A. Note that this is the matrix with the same eigenvalues and eigenspaces as A where every eigenvalue is replaced with its square-root, i.e. if A = UΣU> for orthonormal U and diagonal Σ with √ 1/2 1/2 > 1/2 1/2 positive entries on the diagonal then A = UΣ U where Σ is the diagonal matrix with Σii = Σii. n 1/2 n Now note that for all x ∈ R we have kxkA = kA xk2. Here, we consider the p-norms define as follows.

Below we prove that the p-norms are in fact norms and compute their duals. First, we we provide the following technical lemma to help the proof.

Using the above lemma we prove Holder’s inequality, which we will see is simply Cauchy Schwarz for the p-norm.
