Aide Memoire for Her Majesty's Ships Visiting Ports in the Isle of Man
1. INVITATION An open invitation is given to Her Majesty's Ships to visit any of the ports in the Isle of Man during every year, where they will receive a genuine and substantial welcome.
As a reminder of this open invitation, and to ensure that the Isle of Man will receive a generous allocation in the programme of visits, His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor each year sends a reminder to the Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth, Admiralty House, Mount Wise, Devonport (Plymouth tot).o
2. NOTIFICATION OF VISITS The Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth, notifies the following persons of the visit— (t) His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man ; (2) His Honour the First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls, General Registry, Douglas ; (3) the Town Clerk, or Clerk of the port local authority of the port of cull, namely— (a) Douglas, Ramsey, Peel and Castletown : the Town Clerk ; (b) Laxey, Port St. Mary and Port Erin : the Clerk of the Village Commissioners ; (4) the Secretary of the Isle of Man Harbour Board, G.P.O. Box t t, Douglas, indicating the dimensions, to facilitate arrangements if berthage is required and available.
LIAISON The Clerks of the respective port local authorities will act as liaison officers for the Commanding Officer of the ship, and make on his behalf, all local contacts and arrangements as desired by the Commanding Officer, who will communicate direct with the port local authority concerned.

OFFICIAL CALLS Official calls are usually made upon His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, His Honour the First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls, the the Mayor or Chairmen of the respective port local authority. The timing of the calls for Douglas, depending upon the circumstances, is usually— 10-00 a.m. the Lieutenant Governor ; 10-15 a.m. the First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls ; 10-30 a.m. the Mayor ; and on making the call arrangements are usually made for return calls.
5. INFORMATION The Isle of Man Tourist Board, Victoria Street, Douglas (Tele- phone number Douglas 4323), will supply to the ships the required number of Guides and Plans. As soon as the Officer Commanding is notified of the date of his proposed visit, he is requested to obtain in advance a limited number of Guides and Plans whereby he will have a detailed picture of the Island's potentialities, upon which he can base his plans. It is recommended that on arrival, personal contact should be made with either Mr. L. Bond (Manager and Secretary) or Mr. W. J. Kermode (who served in H.M. Navy), both of the Isle of Man Tourist Board. The officers of the Board should be able to arrange accommodation on reasonable terms for shore leave.
6. HARBOURS (1) GENERAL Fresh water is laid on at all piers, and can be supplied at any time by arrangement with the Harbour Masters. (2) GANGWAYS These are available.
COMMUNICATIONS TO HER MAJESTY'S SHIPS AT SEA AND ALONGSIDE The present positioin is as follows: - (a) FACILITIES FOR SHIPS NOT BERTHED ALONGSIDE Douglas Harbour radio is not continuously manned, but is available on Channels 16 and 12 by previous arrangement with the Harbour Master. 8. BERTHAGE DOUGLAS : Vessels of a length not exceeding 400' o.a. and of a draught not exceeding 18' aft., 12' forward, can berth at the seaward end of the Victoria Pier, except during the tourist season (June to August inclusive), when the berths on the Victoria Pier will be required for arrivals and departures of passenger steamers. Vessels of a draught of 13' maximum, and approximately 200' in length, can be accom- modated at the Battery Pier or, if circumstances permit, at the Victoria Pier. PEEL : Vessels of 35o' in length, draught not exceeding 16' aft., 12' forward, can be accommodated along- side the Breakwater, but in July to August in- clusive the pier may be in full use with fishing vessels landing herring.
