Annual Protest Vigil at the Eritrean Embassy in London by OCP on MAY 19, 2012 in FEATURED NEWS,NEWS Annual Protest Vigil at the Eritrean Embassy in London by OCP on MAY 19, 2012 in FEATURED NEWS,NEWS 19/5/2012 The British Orthodox Church Read OCP Article on Persecution of Christians in Eritrea: The Detained Patriarch, Persecuted Christians and a Dying Church On 17 May, what has sadly become the annual Protest Vigil at the Eritrean Embassy in Islington, London , appropriately took as its motto, “Ten Years is too long.” As on previous occasions the protesters took up their position on the pavement opposite the embassy. They represented a wide rank of Christian denominations as well as of several human rights groups (Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Release International, Release Eritrea, Church on Chains, Human Rights Concern Eritrea) who came together to pray for the persecuted Christians of Eritrea and their government. A large number of the banners portrayed His Holiness Abune Antonios, the imprisoned Patriarch of Eritrea. Abba Seraphim was joined by the Bishop of Southwark (The Right Rev’d Christopher Chessum), Father Yonas Tesheme (Sheffield) and Deacon Joannes Gebrehiwet (Manchester) with a number of other deacons representing the Eritrean Orthodox Diocese of Europe. Speakers and Prayers were led by Abba Seraphim, Andy Dipper (Release International), Dr. Berhane Ashmelesh (Release Eritrea), David Turner (Church in Chains), Elsa Chyrum (Human Rights Concern Eritrea), Selam Kidane (Release Eritrea), Dr. Khataza Gondwe (CSW). At the end of the vigil a letter, signed on behalf of the whole group by Abba Seraphim and Bishop Christopher, was delivered to the Ambassador. The two bishops and Dr. Berhane were kept waiting at the door and when the Metropolitan Police tried to find an Embassy official to whom they could deliver it, they were at first ignored and then rudely shouted at and told to go away. Eventually the police delivered the letter on their behalf. .

  • Eritrea: Religious Groups
Country Policy and Information Note Eritrea: Religious groups Version 2.0e October 2016 Preface This note provides country of origin information (COI) and policy guidance to Home Office decision makers on handling particular types of protection and human rights claims. This includes whether claims are likely to justify the granting of asylum, humanitarian protection or discretionary leave and whether – in the event of a claim being refused – it is likely to be certifiable as ‘clearly unfounded’ under s94 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002. Decision makers must consider claims on an individual basis, taking into account the case specific facts and all relevant evidence, including: the policy guidance contained with this note; the available COI; any applicable caselaw; and the Home Office casework guidance in relation to relevant policies. Country Information The COI within this note has been compiled from a wide range of external information sources (usually) published in English. Consideration has been given to the relevance, reliability, accuracy, objectivity, currency, transparency and traceability of the information and wherever possible attempts have been made to corroborate the information used across independent sources, to ensure accuracy. All sources cited have been referenced in footnotes. It has been researched and presented with reference to the Common EU [European Union] Guidelines for Processing Country of Origin Information (COI), dated April 2008, and the European Asylum Support Office’s research guidelines, Country of Origin Information report methodology, dated July 2012. Feedback Our goal is to continuously improve our material. Therefore, if you would like to comment on this note, please email the Country Policy and Information Team.

  • Council of Oriental Orthodox Churches in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland
GS Misc 1009 GENERAL SYNOD COUNCIL FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY Council of Oriental Orthodox Churches in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland 1) At this group of sessions of the General Synod, we welcome His Grace Bishop Angaelos, who has been appointed as the first representative of the Council of Oriental Orthodox Churches in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland (The Council), following an invitation by the Business Committee under Standing Order 113 (a) to the Council to nominate a representative. Bishop Angaelos is the President of the Council, and Co-Chair of the Anglican Oriental Orthodox Regional Forum, and the metropolitan of the Coptic Church of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. 2) The Oriental Orthodox is one of the major Christian traditions with a presence in this country, which has not hitherto been represented at the General Synod. With the addition of a representative of the Council of Oriental Orthodox Churches to the group of ecumenical representatives of the Synod, this significant gap has been filled. 3) The six Oriental Orthodox churches - Coptic, Syrian, Armenian, Ethiopian, Eritrean and the (Indian) Malankara - are in communion with each other and are also called ancient Oriental, lesser Eastern, and pre- or ante-Chalcedonian churches. They represent an ancient and distinct Christian tradition (and should not be confused with the Eastern Orthodox churches. 4) They are churches of the first three ecumenical councils (Nicea, Constantinople and Ephesus) but did not accept the Christological statement of the Council of Chalcedon (451), which refers to two natures united in the one person of Christ.

  • The Spread of Syriac Was Due to At
Slide 1 What do we mean by Syriac? The spread of Syriac was due to at least two factors: the spread of Christianity in the Semitic-speaking world, and commerce on the Silk Road, both activities sometimes combined. Today, a few million Christians in India of various denominations follow the Syriac tradition. Slide 2 Syriac languages Syriac is a form of Aramaic, a language whose many dialects have been in continuous use since the 11th century BC. Originally the language of the Aramean people, Aramaic became the lingua franca of the Near East by the 6th century BC. It was the native tongue of the ancient Chaldeans, a second language to the Assyro-Babylonians, an official language of the Persian Achaemenians, and a common language of the Jews replacing Hebrew. Jesus and the Apostles spoke and preached in Aramaic. Syriac is the Aramaic dialect of Edessa Slide 3 Relat of Syriac to Arabic and Surrounding Region Slide 4 A matter of proximity, but not of the same genesis. When the Arabs desired to transmit the Greek sciences into Arabic during the 8th and 9th centuries, they turned to their Syriac subjects to do the task. In most cases, these Syriac scholars translated the works first into their native language then into Arabic. As a result, many of the Arabic scientific terminology, including the names of plants, are rooted in Syriac. Scientific works and terminology from other cultures, such as Persian and Indian, passed to Arabic via Syriac; a noted example is the name of the chemical element Zirconium (via Syriac zargono 'color of gold').

  • Unorthodox Orthodoxy in Britain
UNORTHODOX ORTHODOXY IN BRITAIN by Margaret Z. Wilkins (Independent Scholar and Researcher) A paper presented at the CESNUR 2013 International Conference in Dalarna University, Falun, Sweden Please do not quote or reproduce without the consent of the author. To start on a personal note, my first encounter with Orthodox Christianity was when I was a student and a friend persuaded me to join the Saturday evening choir at the Russian church near the university, which sang Vespers in English every week. My involvement there left me with an abiding interest in mainstream Orthodoxy, and subsequent acquaintance with an episcopus vagans, ordained into an independent church which drew on an assortment of Christian traditions, opened my eyes to the wonderful world of other not entirely orthodox Orthodox churches that since the middle of the 19th century have sprung up, split, died, mutated, and in some cases survived. This paper is a brief exploration of some of them and their relationship, or lack of it, to canonical Orthodoxy, which itself is changing as it becomes part of the mainstream of religious life in the UK. Orthodoxy has been around in the British Isles for a long time – indeed, if you’re a purist, it existed in Britain from the introduction of Christianity until 1054, when the Great Schism officially divided the churches of east and west and there was no longer one undivided church. As I hope to show, this concept of Orthodox rootedness is a powerful one in indigenous British Orthodoxy. More tangibly, there were links between Britain and Orthodoxy, especially the Greek Orthodox Church, from the seventeenth century onwards; Greek scholars and clergy came to study in Britain and the Greek business community that had settled in London built its first church in Soho in 1677.
