312 Ridgedale Avenue East , New Jersey 07936 BULLETIN February 7, 2021 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

A powerful winter storm has been battering New Jersey this past week leaving some of the state’s highest snowfall totals seen in years. It dumped more than 2 feet of snow on Monday and Tuesday in East Hanover. A big thank you to John, Cynthia and Anthony Trezza and their Essex & Morris Contracting Co., Inc. for their gift of snow plowing during this historic winter storm. John, his son Anthony and their employees spent many hours during the day and at night snowplowing, shoveling snow, and salting our property. Thank you also to our facility manager Jeff Wall for coordinating the snow plowing and keeping our church grounds clean and safe.

Last year, just before the beginning of the pandemic, I introduced the Flocknote communication system in our parish. Many of you who signed up with Flocknote on your mobile number and email have been receiving text messages and emails from me with announcements, prayers and updates. Flocknote is a great tool that helps me and Fr. Kerwin to reach more of you, our sheep. Why do we do it? We’re on a mission to build a more connected Church.

Ready for Lent? Get Engaged.

Soon we will start sending Lenten messages through Flocknote. Flocknote has partnered with Word on Fire to bring you Engage, a convenient way to view videos and participate in mini courses. You can also expect to receive videos with engaging questions from Bishop Robert Barron, one of the Church’s greatest messengers. We encourage you to participate in our discussions as together we draw deeper into the Faith.

We also will have free access to the entire Word on Fire digital video library. You can watch all of Bishop Bar- ron’s films or study programs at your convenience.

If your email and/or cell phone number is not registered with the parish, or if you would like to add additional addresses, please register at flocknote.com/saintroseoflima

A big thank you to Kelly Robertazzi for coordinating the Lenten Flocknote project.

BIBLE STUDY STARTING FEBRUARY 11TH

Jesus is our savior, our redeemer, our Lord, and our God. Our belief in Jesus is what makes us who we are as Catholics, but do we really know him as we should? We in- vite you to make him the center of your life by joining us for Jesus: The Way, the Truth, and the Life, a video study program that plores the entirety of Jesus’ life and what he means for us as Catholics today. Five weeks were covered last Fall and we will cover the remaining this Lent.

We will learn how Jesus is God Incarnate, fully divine and fully human. We’ll experience his intimacy with the Father, his revelation of the Father’s love, and his gift of the Holy Spirit to each of us. Most importantly, our encounter with Christ will empower us to know and love him in a new and life-changing way.

We will resume the Jesus study on Thursday, February 11th at 7:00-8:30pm (the week before Ash Wednesday) and meet every other Thursday evening. Participants will meet to view an engaging video presentation followed by group discussion and fellowship. We will be social distancing in the cafeteria while simultaneously providing on-line participation for those who cannot attend in person.

For more information or to register for the final five weeks, please contact Deacon Ron at [email protected] or 973-887-2963. We hope you can join us! Though not required, we are suggesting a $30 donation to cover the cost of materials.

MARTHA’S FEAST DAY WILL NOW INCLUDE MARY AND LAZARUS, AFTER CHANGE FROM POPE FRANCIS

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Recognizing their welcome of and witness to Christ, Pope Francis has approved changing the liturgical feast of St. Martha to include her sister and brother, Mary and Lazarus, on the church’s universal calen- dar of feast days.

The names of Mary and Lazarus will be added to the July 29 feast on the General Roman Calendar, the universal schedule of holy days and feast days for the Latin rite of the .

The Vatican Feb. 2 published the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments’ decree ordering the change in calendars.

Signed by Cardinal Robert Sarah, the congregation’s prefect, the decree said Pope Francis approved the memorial for Martha, Mary and Lazarus after “considering the important evangelical witness they offered in welcoming the Lord Jesus into their home, in listening to him attentively, (and) in believing that he is the resurrection and the life.”

“In the household of Bethany, the Lord Jesus experienced the family spirit and friendship of Martha, Mary and Lazarus, and for this reason the Gospel of John states that he loved them,” it said. “Martha generously offered him hospitality, Mary listened attentively to his words and Lazarus promptly emerged from the tomb at the command of the one who humiliated death.”

The decree explained that the “traditional uncertainty of the Latin church” regarding the identity of three women named Mary in the Gospels -- Mary Magdalene, Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus, and Mary “the sinner whose sins the Lord had forgiven” -- was resolved “in recent studies and times,” thus paving the way for celebrating the siblings in one memorial.

A separate congregation decree, also published Feb. 2, said the pope also approved the optional memorial of three doctors of the church: Sts. Gregory of Narek, a 10th-century Armenian monk; John of Avila, the famed 16th-century preacher, confessor and spiritual writer; and 12th-century German abbess Hildegard of Bingen.

The saints, who hail from both the Eastern and Western church traditions, were declared doctors of the church for their important contributions to theology and spirituality.

In its decree, the congregation explained that those given the title of “doctor of the church” exemplify the “link be- tween holiness and understanding things divine and also human.

“Indeed, the wisdom that characterizes these men and women is not solely theirs, since by becoming disciples of divine wisdom, they have themselves become teachers of wisdom for the entire ecclesial community,” it said. “It is in this light that the holy ‘doctors’ are inscribed in the General Roman Calendar.”

The optional memorial for St. Gregory of Narek will be celebrated Feb. 27, while those for Sts. John of Avila and Hildegard of Bingen will be celebrated May 10 and Sept. 17, respectively.

There are currently 36 doctors of the church, including Sts. John Chrysostom, Augustine, Catherine of Siena and Therese of Lisieux.

TWEETS FROM POPE FRANCIS

Pope Francis • @Pontifex Jan 31

“The Lord does not call us to be soloists, but to be part of a choir that can sometimes miss a note or two, but must always try to sing in unison.”

Pope Francis • @Pontifex Jan 30

“The Lord looks for us where we are, he loves us as we are, and he patiently walks by our side. With his word, he wants to change us, to invite us to live fuller lives and to put out into the deep together with him.”

Pope Francis • @Pontifex Jan 29

“The culture of life is the heritage that Christians want to share with everyone. Every human life, unique and unrepeatable, is priceless. This must be courageously proclaimed ever anew through word and action.”
