RABBI’S MESSAGE Coming Home or Coming It is powerful when we gather together as a Together I recently came across a community in another house of worship on the Sunday picture of a synagogue in the midst evening before Thanksgiving. And it is a statement of of its rebuilding project after the our strength when we stand shoulder to shoulder destruction from Hurricane singing HaTikvah in another synagogue to celebrate Harvey. It is inspiring when I walk into High Holidays this year, in order to a shivah home and recognize almost all of the faces, be in the building for the upcoming because it is our community out in full force supporting holidays. our own. CANTOR’S NOTES This, then, is the task of preparing for Rosh Hashanah: A student once went to the head discovering the right questions to ask as we look-over of his Yeshiva Day School and asked ourselves. And then, when we come to shul – alone, or permission to leave the school and go with our family and friends – we bring the questions home early. ― “I am a hazzan, he with us. Somewhere within the machzor, in the music, in explained, and I need to back home the company of daveners, perhaps even in the words of a and look over the Machzor.” The sermon, we find the strength to find the answers. And principal replied, “The Machzor has somewhere, from within, from around us, we find the not changed since last year, but you strength to direct our lives, to renew our days as of old. have. Better you go home and look This ultimately is the gift of Rosh Hashanah. Each year over yourself!” we are reminded to ask these questions. And each year There are two tasks that each of us must do as we we are given the opportunity to change. We don’t have to prepare for the High Holidays. One is to look over the wait until the final stages of life before we look back on Machzor and prepare carefully the words we will use. our entire 120 years and find ourselves disappointed in This year at TEPV, we are most fortunate to be using a the way our lives have turned out. We don’t have to live, new Machzor for our High Holiday worship, Machzor Lev or die, with regrets. And this is a beautiful thing. Shalem. There is another, more difficult and more important task that we must do to prepare for Rosh Hashanah and High Holiday Security Reminder
