-87- to Torah, Yud-Bais Tanonuz teaches that a Jew who is merely on the level of a fence is also important. There is another connection between the two dates. Our sages tell us (Megillah 13b) that "G-d reveals the medicine be fore the blow." Yud-Bais Tammuz is the medium whose celebration enables the seventeenth of Tammuz, the blow, to be transformed into "a day of rejoicing" in Messianic times. The above provides a practical lesson for our behavior. We have to stand firm in all matters of Yiddishkeit, without being affected by any difficulties, conscious that we are doing what G-d wants, acting as His emissaries. This resolute stand must extend even to a mere fence to the Torah and even when challenged by a powerful country. The strength to carry on this service is derived from the blessing of the month of Tammuz. Even if one's initial efforts do not seem to meet with success, one must be conscious that "If he comes to purify himself, he is helped from Above" and he will soon see the fruit of his work. Through this course of action, we will hasten the complete and true redemption led by Moshiach, speedily in our days. 2. The above relates to the blessing of the month of Tammuz every year. This year, the date on which Shabbos Mevorchim falls is the 23rd of Sivan, and the portion of the Torah Shelach is read on that day. The book of Esther specifically mentions the 23rd of Sivan. (F) "In the third month, the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day thereof, the scribes of the king were called, and it was written exactly what Mordechai had dictated to the Jews, as well as to the governers..

WESTERN WALL ַה ּכֹו ֶתל ַה ַּמ ַעָר ִבי The Western Wall, known as the Kotel, is revered as the holiest site for the Jewish people. A part of the outer retaining wall of the Second Temple that was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, it is the place closest to the ancient Holy of Holies, where only the Kohanim— —Jewish priests were allowed access. When Israel gained independence in 1948, Jordan controlled the Western Wall and all of the Old City of Jerusalem; the city was reunified in the 1967 Six-Day War. The Western Wall is considered an Orthodox synagogue by Israeli authorities, with separate prayer spaces for men and women. A mixed egalitarian prayer area operates along a nearby section of the Temple’s retaining wall, raising to the forefront contemporary ideas of religious expression—a prime example of how Israel navigates between past and present. SITES AND INSIGHTS theicenter.org SHUK ׁשוּק Every Israeli city has an open-air market, or shuk, where vendors sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to clothing, appliances, and souvenirs. There’s no other place that feels more authentically Israeli than a shuk on Friday afternoon, as seemingly everyone shops for Shabbat. Drawn by the freshness and variety of produce, Israelis and tourists alike flock to the shuk, turning it into a microcosm of the country. Shuks in smaller cities and towns operate just one day per week, while larger markets often play a key role in the city’s cultural life. At night, after the vendors go home, Machaneh Yehuda— —Jerusalem’s shuk, turns into the city’s nightlife hub.

  • Yom Hazikaron
Yom Hazikaron : Degrees of Separation www.makomisrael.o rg 0 1 www.makomisrael.org Yom HaZikaron (Israel Remembrance Day): Degrees of Separation This lesson focuses on the challenge of marking Yom HaZikaron (Israel Remembrance Day) for North American Jewry. We explore the notion of commemorating in the wider American context, and expand on this to discuss Israel’s Remembrance Day, and what it means to commemorate from a distance. Goals : • The students will grasp the challenge of commemorating the fallen from a geographical and psychological distance. • The students will be challenged to assess the role of a mourner from afar • The students will explore the meaning of being connected to Jews they have never met • The students will explore various ways of moving beyond the obstacle of distance, allowing North American Jewry to connect to Remembrance Day • The students will be challenged to draw closer and connect to the fallen soldiers in Israel, despite the distance • The students will be given the opportunity to design their own program to mark Israel Remembrance Day Outline : Part 1 : Trigger exercise In the first part, students will participate in drama exercise to introduce the theme of the lesson. Part 2 : Discussion A. September 11 th The students will explore the idea of commemorating from afar by learning about the September 11 th memorial in California, and discussing how they think the tragedy should be marked by those who were not affected personally by it. B. Yom HaZikaron (Israel Remembrance Day) The students will apply their 9/11 discussion to marking Israel’s Remembrance Day and be challenged to think about how they should commemorate the day.

And it seems to me that the fast that the leaders of the Three Lands [Greater/Little Poland, Galicia (with Podolia) and Volhynia] decreed, along with Gaonim, to fast on the 20th of Sivan every year because of the evil decrees, due to our great sins, one should read Vayechal even if it falls on a Monday or Thursday, since this fast is even more established than the fasts on Monday and Thursday after Pesach and Sukkot… 3.

The findings show that syncretism was created in the identity, and in the organization and leadership patterns of the Ethiopian leaders that reflected their goals. By displaying symbols of their ethnic identity, they struggled over the right of their excluded minority group to ethnic otherness and its inclusion in the collective space. They stressed the importance of these ethnic celebrations as a factor that unifies the people and the symmetry of this unity. They served as a bridge between generations, between tradition and modernity, and between the absorbing and the absorbed. The article supplies essential insights on how young leaders use their ethnic tradition as a resource for the recruitment of cultural, social, and political capital for uniting a minority group and integrating it into society. Keywords: 1.5 generation, holiday, identity, immigrants, leadership, syncretism. Israeli society is a society of immigrants who arrived in waves from different countries and communities worldwide, including Ethiopia (Reichman, 2009), who are the subject of this article. This article comprises part of a comprehensive study that investigated the ritual dynamics of the Sigd, a religious holiday of Ethiopian immigrants in Israel, from a multigenerational perspective, including elderly spiritual leaders (Sharaby, 2020a) and the youth of this community (Sharaby, 2020b).
