NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING National Youth Leadership Training Overview National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide all 13- to 20-year-old youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. For many years, junior leader training (JLT) was an important part of the leader- ship training continuum of BSA local councils throughout America. In 2003 and 2004, a task force of leadership experts and hundreds of Scouts in pilot courses across the nation reviewed and tested every aspect of this NYLT syllabus, which incorporates the latest leadership ideas and presents fresh, vital, and meaningful training for today’s youth. The Youth Training Continuum Youth leadership training is a three-phase training experience, and a common thread will connect all three phases. The first phase begins in the unit with the senior youth and adult leader con- ducting Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops or Crews. Phase two is NYLT conducted by the local council, and the third phase is National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE), a coed program as of 2010. Kodiak Challenge is an optional trek-based experiential course based on the leadership skills of Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops or Crews. Kodiak Challenge is not required for NYLT or NAYLE. In 2010, the program was updated to include Venturers in addition to Boy Scouts. Read the BSA Vision Statement: The Boy Scouts of America will prepare every eligible youth in America to become a responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Above all, remember: The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Golden Compass In all NYLT courses—in ALL of our leadership courses—culture is key to success. Point: Staff Look at the vision and mission statements of the BSA. Our mission is to prepare and Course Culture young people; our vision is to prepare every eligible youth in America to become the best leader he or she can be. The entire staff must embrace the culture of servant leadership, with a view to success for all. All staff, male and female, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and adults, are chosen to be of the highest quality, each of whom will deliver an outstanding NYLT program to our youth. Including Each council should offer NYLT courses that are open to both males and females, Venturing and all courses will use the current syllabus. Overview-1 NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING Staff Makeup Every effort must be made to ensure that Venturers, both male and female, are represented on the course. It is also required that at least one adult leader be female. The critical decision for filling any role is who is best suited, not what their gender is. Remember the NYLT culture! Patrol We strongly recommend mixing males and females in the same patrol. The Makeup initial impulse might be to have male-only patrols and female-only patrols. All the experience with coed training, camps, Philmont treks, and more shows that when males and females are mixed in a patrol, the behavior, standards, and ultimate performance of that patrol is much higher than single-gender groups. Experience also shows that mixing Venturers with Boy Scouts leads to very good outcomes for both programs! Patrols should be made up of youth similar in age to one another so they are divided roughly into patrols of younger youth, older youth, and those in between. By no means should the 13-year-old boy be put with the 20-year-old girl or the 17-year-old boy. Organizing patrols so there is not a large range of ages (more than two to three years’ difference) can maximize the learning potential and lead- ership experience of all NYLT participants by giving patrol members equal footing with one another. Maximizing geographic, cultural, program, and gender diversity in each patrol will enhance the ability of each patrol to observe and understand the patrol dynamics and encourage higher levels of patrol maturity. Remember that NYLT is a leadership course, not an outdoor skills course. Remember, Venturing has no advancement that requires outdoor skills training, and Venturing crews may focus on almost any hobby, interest, or activity, Venturing crew members (male or female) may have little or no outdoor skills.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading Comic Books Critically: How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Education by Fang-Tzu Hsu 2015 © Copyright by Fang-Tzu Hsu 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading Comic Books Critically: How Japanese Comic Books Influence Taiwanese Students by Fang-Tzu Hsu Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Carlos A. Torres, Chair Education knows no boundaries but hot button topics, like comic books, demonstrate school, teacher and parent limitations. Japanese comic books (manga) are a litmus test of pedagogical tolerance. Because they play an important role in the lives of most Taiwanese teenagers, I give them pride of place in this dissertation. To understand Japanese comic books and their influence, I use Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy to combine perspectives from cultural studies, comparative education, and educational sociology. With the cooperation of the administration, faculty and students of a Taiwanese junior high school, I used surveys, a textual analysis of five student-selected titles and interviews with students and educators. I discovered that Japanese manga contain complex and sometimes contradictory ideologies of ethnicity, gender, class, and violence. From an ethnic perspective, although students may glean cultural content from manga heroes and their retinues, people of color and non-Japanese Asians are either caricatures or non-existent; although Taiwanese teenager readers seem unaware of this. From a gender standpoint, neither the female characters’ provocative representation nor the male characters’ slavering responses to it raise students’ and teachers’ concerns.

RADIOHEAD: THE GUITAR WEILDING, DANCING, SINGING COMMODITY by SELENA LAWSON Under the Direction of Jeffery Bennett ABSTRACT In 2007, Radiohead released a downloadable album, In Rainbows, allowing consumers to pay what they thought the album was worth. The band responded to a moment of change in the music industry. Since then, other bands, like Nine Inch Nails and Coldplay, have made similar moves. Radiohead's capability to release an album and let the fans decide its worth relied on the image they built, which foregrounded their commodification. The historic move redefined the boundaries between art and commodity, a well know tension in popular music studies. The thesis focuses on popular music as communication in the changing industry. Using Radiohead’s album as a case study, it looks at the changing boundaries in the tension between art and commodity. The thesis examines Radiohead's performance, its mediation by the press, and what the album’s distribution method meant to the fans.

  • A Perfect Circle – Eat the Elephant
