Historical Profile of Hampton Bays, Phase I
HISTORIC PROFILE OF HAMPTON BAYS Phase I GOOD GROUND MONTAUK HIGHWAY CORRIDOR and CANOE PLACE MONTAUK HIGHWAY, GOOD GROUND 1935 by Charles F. Duprez Prepared by: Barbara M. Moeller June 2005 Additional copies of the HISTORIC PROFILE OF HAMPTON BAYS: Phase I May be obtained through Squires Press POB 995 Hampton Bays, NY 11946 $25 All profits to benefit: The Hampton Bays Historical & Preservation Society HISTORIC PROFILE OF HAMPTON BAYS INTRODUCTION: The Town of Southampton has sponsored this survey of his- toric resources to complement existing and forthcoming planning initiatives for the Hamlet of Hampton Bays. A Hampton Bays Montauk Highway Corridor (Hamlet Centers) Study is anticipated to commence in the near future. A review of Hampton Bays history and an inventory of hamlet heritage resources is considered a necessary component in order to help insure orderly and coordinated development within the Hamlet of Hampton Bays in a manner that respects community character. Hampton Bays United, a consortium of community organizations, spearheaded the initiative to complete a historical profile for Hampton Bays and a survey of hamlet heritage re- sources. The 2000 Hampton Bays Hamlet Center Strategy Plan adopted as an update to the 1999 Comprehensive Plan was limited to an area from the railroad bridge tres- tle on Montauk Highway near West Tiana Road (westerly border) to the Montauk Highway railroad bridge near Bittersweet Avenue (easterly border.) Shortly, the De- partment of Land Management will be preparing a “Hampton Bays Montauk High- way Corridor Land Use/Transportation Strategy Study” which will span the entire length of Montauk Highway from Jones Road to the Shinnecock Canal. -

Cleo Coyle's Virgin Candy Appletini
Cleo Coyle’s Virgin Candy Appletini Text and photos (c) by Alice Alfonsi who writes The Coffeehouse Mysteries as Cleo Coyle with her husband, Marc Cerasini. Our drink recipe gives you great versatility. You choose your favorite ingredients and method of preparation: Make it a virgin drink (without alcohol) or spike it as much or as little as you like. Mix it by the glass, the pitcher, or in a punch bowl. The pomegranate juice, added to the natural apple juice, provides good-for-you antioxidants--and a bloody good color for Halloween. Finally, have fun with the garnishes... We like to crust the rim of each glass with cinnamon- sugar, which lends delicious flavor to each drink and a little style to your service. You can slice an apple (through its equator) and slip the slice onto to the glass rim, as you would a lemon or lime slice. Or try our idea of decorating the serving table using maraschino cherries on long skewers to mimic the look of candy apples. Whatever you do, we hope you have fun with the recipe, and have a spirited Halloween! ~ Cleo Ingredients: 2 parts apple juice (no sugar added) or chilled sparkling cider 1 part pomegranate juice (optional to spike) vodka or gin or white rum, to taste (optional to spike) cinnamon schnapps (e.g., Goldschlager), to taste Free Recipe Guide to Cleo’s new culinary mystery Maraschino cherries Brewed Awakening: Cinnamon sugar (*see method below) click here. Aperitifs, Cordials, and Liqueurs
Chapter 6 Aperitifs, Cordials, and Liqueurs In This Chapter ▶ Serving up some tasty before-dinner drinks ▶ Examining the vast world of cordials and liqueurs his chapter is a catchall for a handful of different liquor Tcategories. Aperitifs were developed specifically as pre-meal beverages. Cordials and liqueurs have a variety of purposes. Some are great mixers, others are good after-dinner drinks, and a few make good aperitifs as well. Go figure. Whetting Your Appetite with Aperitifs Aperitif comes from the Latin word aperire, meaning “to open.” An aperitif is usually any type of drink you’d have before a meal. Most aperitifs are usually low in alcohol and mild-tasting. You can drink many of the cordials and liqueurs listed later in this chapter as aperitifs as well. I don’t have much more to say about aperitifs other than to list the individual products that are available, such as the following: ✓ Amer Picon (French): A blend of African oranges, gen- tian root, quinine bark, and some alcohol. Usually served with club soda or seltzer water with lemon. ✓ Campari (Italian): A unique combination of fruits, spices, herbs, and roots. 54 Part II: Distilling the High Points of Various Spirits ✓ Cynar (Italian): A bittersweet aperitif that’s made from artichokes. Best when served over ice with a twist of lemon or orange. ✓ Dubonnet (American): Produced in California and avail- able in blond and red. Serve chilled. ✓ Fernet-Branca (Italian): A bitter, aromatic blend of approximately 40 herbs and spices (including myrrh, rhubarb, camomile, cardamom, and saffron) in a base of grape alcohol.
