Then, reread the text and annotate three to five things you notice and three to five things you wonder about. From the Nez Perce National Historic Trail website Food and Drink Fish were an important food for Indian families. They were caught in many different ways. Some tribes made hand-knotted nets, both large and small. Some of the tribes in the Pacific Northwest still fish with large dipnets, from a platform built up above the edge of the riverbank. Others use a seine net (pronounced “sayn”) to catch many fish at once. Some tribes made a fish trap from sticks. Others built dams with rocks, dirt, and fallen trees; they would then scoop the fish from the water with baskets. The Nez Perce and other tribes picked and ate many kinds of wild berries—strawberries, blueberries, wild grapes, huckleberries, serviceberries, currants, cranberries, and many more. Researchers have found there were 36 different kinds of fruit that Indians dried to eat in the winter. They knew what the plants looked like, where they grew, and when they got ripe every year. Berries were carried home in baskets and eaten fresh, but they were also dried and saved for winter. Huckleberries and other berries—such as serviceberries and currants—were often used by the Nez Perce to make a staple food called pemmican. Meat is sliced very thin, then dried, and then pounded or ground with stones to a dry powder. Chopped dried berries are added to the powdered meat, and then melted fat (such as deer fat or buffalo fat) is mixed in. -

A Hampton Bays Montauk Highway Corridor (Hamlet Centers) Study is anticipated to commence in the near future. A review of Hampton Bays history and an inventory of hamlet heritage resources is considered a necessary component in order to help insure orderly and coordinated development within the Hamlet of Hampton Bays in a manner that respects community character. Hampton Bays United, a consortium of community organizations, spearheaded the initiative to complete a historical profile for Hampton Bays and a survey of hamlet heritage re- sources. The 2000 Hampton Bays Hamlet Center Strategy Plan adopted as an update to the 1999 Comprehensive Plan was limited to an area from the railroad bridge tres- tle on Montauk Highway near West Tiana Road (westerly border) to the Montauk Highway railroad bridge near Bittersweet Avenue (easterly border.) MEDIA RELEASE ANGOSTURA BITTERS IN WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE COCKTAIL Port of Spain, Trinidad. 11 th October, 2012. World-renowned bartender Salvatore Calabrese, has broken the Guinness World Record for producing the most expensive cocktail with a Cognac-based drink, priced at 5,500 pounds sterling a glass. Product from a 1900 bottle of Angostura aromatic bitters, was used in the creation. Trinidadians should be proud. “Salvatore’s Legacy”, was concocted by Calabrese in front of an audience of London’s top bartenders at The Playboy Club in Mayfair yesterday. It is also the world’s oldest cocktail, containing a liqueur from 1770 and Cognac from 1788, around the time of the American Revolution and Captain Cook’s claiming of Australia. The cocktail, composed of 40ml of 1788 Clos de Griffier Vieux Cognac, 20ml of 1770 Kummel Liqueur, 20ml of 1860 Dubb Orange Curaçao and two dashes of Angostura Bitters from the 1900s, was bought by a friend and long term client of Calabrese. The successful attempt, to coincide with London Cocktail Week, was overseen by a Guinness World Records adjudicator. The previous record for the world’s most expensive cocktail was held by The Skyview Bar at the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai, with a £3,766.52 a glass tipple. Calabrese, who has previously worked at Dukes Hotel in St James’s and The Lanesborough in Knightsbridge, is a vintage Cognac specialist. He has built a collection of fine and rare Cognacs worth over £1 million, dating back to the late 18 th century, many of which are displayed behind glass at Salvatore’s Bar at The Playboy Club. -
