Seine beiden hochrenommierten musikalischen Begleiter, der Perkussionist Ramesh Shotham stammt ursprünglich aus dem südindischen Madras (dem heutigen Chennai) und ist nicht nur dank seiner Präsenz auf über 150 Alben einer der meistbeschäftigten indischen Jazz-Perkussionisten überhaupt. Christian Ramond hat gleichfalls einen deutsch-indischen Background und spielte schon mit Jazzlegenden wie Albert Mangelsdorff, Kenny Wheeler und Lee Konitz. Zahlreiche Instrumente des indischen Kulturkreises mischen sich in der Musik des Trios mit den »europäischen« Klängen von Kontrabass und (präpariertem) Klavier: die Trommeln Dholak, Tavil, Kanjira und Mridangam, der Tonkrug Ghatam, die Morsing (Maultrommel) und das indische Harmonium. »Eastern Flowers« legten mit der im November 2013 veröffentlichten und durch die Kunststiftung NRW geförderten CD »Mineralle« ein Album vor, auf dem die Vielfalt indischer Musikkultur auf europäische Harmonik trifft. In dem dicht verwobenen, häufig intuitiv wirkenden Zusammenspiel spüren die drei Künstler sichtlich den Wurzeln ihrer indischen Herkunft nach, doch zugleich lassen sie ihrem avantgardistischen Forscherdrang freien Lauf. Allein vier Stücke wurden inspiriert von einer vom Goethe-Institut unterstützten Tournee durch Indien, die die drei Musiker im Dezember 2011 nach Neu-Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata und Mumbai geführt hatte. University of Alberta ‘Indo-Jazz Fusion’: Jazz and Karnatak Music in Contact by Tanya Kalmanovitch A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music Edmonton, Alberta Spring 2008 Abstract An inherently intercultural music, jazz presents a unique entry in the catalog of interactions between Indian music and the west. This dissertation is situated in a line of recent accounts that reappraise the period of Western colonial hegemony in India by tracing a complex continuum of historical and musical events over three centuries. It charts the historical routes by which jazz and Karnatak music have come into contact in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, both in India and abroad. It presents a detailed account of the history of jazz in India, and Indian music in jazz, and examines jazz’s contact with Karnatak music in three contexts—jazz pedagogy, intercultural collaboration, and the Indian diaspora in the United States—illustrating the musical, social and performative spaces in which these musics come into contact, and describing the specific musical and social practices, and political and social institutions that support this activity. Case studies in this dissertation include an educational exchange between the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program of the New School University (New York, NY) and the Brhaddhvani Research and Training Centre for Musics of the World (Chennai, India), directed by the author in December 2003 – January 2004; a 2001 collaboration between Irish jazz/traditional band Khanda and the Karnataka College of Percussion; and analyses of recent recordings by pianist Vijay Iyer, saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa and drummer Ravish Momin.

R.A. RAMAMANI All the world’s her stage Srilatha Krishna These inimitable gurus helped her get a strong mooring in Carnatic music. Her innate interest in the rhythmic aspects of music soon drew her to the art of rendering pallavis. She won the first prize in a pallavi competition conducted by the Karnataka Ganakala Parishat. It was a proud moment for her when D.K. Pattammal presented her the prize of a tambura, as M.L. Vasanthakumari looked on as the chief guest. This was quickly followed by a win at the Music Academy of Madras in 1970, with Mudicondan Venkatarama Iyer and Tinniyam Venkatarama Iyer as the judges. Another resounding success came when she demonstrated an avadhana pallavi to an assembly of the greats of Carnatic music in Bengaluru. Everyone remarked on the musical merits of her rendering and applauded the fact that she did not let it denigrate into an exercise in rhythmic excesses. A. Karthik Mani (Drummer/Percussionist) Karthik Mani hails from a family of musicians – his father, legendary TAS Mani is a renowned percussionist who is the founder of “The Karnataka College of Percussion”, and his mother Vid RA Ramamani is a reputed ground breaking Carnatic vocalist who has performed Worldwide and has pioneered the Indo-Jazz fusion.
