Seine beiden hochrenommierten musikalischen Begleiter, der Perkussionist Ramesh Shotham stammt ursprünglich aus dem südindischen Madras (dem heutigen Chennai) und ist nicht nur dank seiner Präsenz auf über 150 Alben einer der meistbeschäftigten indischen Jazz-Perkussionisten überhaupt. Christian Ramond hat gleichfalls einen deutsch-indischen Background und spielte schon mit Jazzlegenden wie Albert Mangelsdorff, Kenny Wheeler und Lee Konitz. Zahlreiche Instrumente des indischen Kulturkreises mischen sich in der Musik des Trios mit den »europäischen« Klängen von Kontrabass und (präpariertem) Klavier: die Trommeln Dholak, Tavil, Kanjira und Mridangam, der Tonkrug Ghatam, die Morsing (Maultrommel) und das indische Harmonium. »Eastern Flowers« legten mit der im November 2013 veröffentlichten und durch die Kunststiftung NRW geförderten CD »Mineralle« ein Album vor, auf dem die Vielfalt indischer Musikkultur auf europäische Harmonik trifft. In dem dicht verwobenen, häufig intuitiv wirkenden Zusammenspiel spüren die drei Künstler sichtlich den Wurzeln ihrer indischen Herkunft nach, doch zugleich lassen sie ihrem avantgardistischen Forscherdrang freien Lauf. Allein vier Stücke wurden inspiriert von einer vom Goethe-Institut unterstützten Tournee durch Indien, die die drei Musiker im Dezember 2011 nach Neu-Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata und Mumbai geführt hatte. Sundaram Ayyar Pradeesh Balan PhD-JRF Scholar (full-time) Department of Music Queen Mary‟s College Chennai – 600 004 Introduction: One of the indelible aspects of music when it comes to passing on to posterity is the variations in renditions, mainly since the sources contain not only texts of songs and notations but also an oral inheritance. This can be broadly witnessed in the compositions of the composers of Carnatic Music. Variations generally occur in the text of the song, rāga, tāḷa, arrangement of the words within the tāḷa cycle and melodic framework, graha, melodic phrases and musical prosody1. The scholars who have written and published on Muttusvāmi Dīkṣitar and his accounts are named in chronological order as follows: Subbarāma Dīkṣitar Kallidaikuricci Ananta Krishṇa Ayyar Natarāja Sundaram Pillai T. L. Venkatarāma Ayyar Dr. V. Rāghavan A. Sundaram Ayyar R. Rangarāmānuja Ayyengār Prof. P. Sāmbamūrthy Dr. N. Rāmanāthan writes about Śri Māhādēva Ayyar of Kallidaikuricci thus: He is a student of Kallidaikuricci Vēdānta Bhāgavatar and along with A. Anantakṛṣṇayyar (well known as Calcutta Anantakṛṣṇa Ayyar) and A. Sundaram Ayyar (of Mayilāpūr), has been instrumental in learning the compositions of Dīkṣitar from Śri Ambi Dīkṣita, son of Subbarāma Dīkṣita and propagating them to the next generation2. Dr. V. Rāghavan (pp. 76-92), in his book Muttuswāmi Dīkṣitar gives an index of Dīkṣitar‟s compositions which is forked in two sections. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute.
