TALMUDIC FORGERIES A CASE STUDY IN ANTI-JEWISH PROPAGANDA By BEN ZION BOKSER HROUGHOUT history, the Talmud has been a main target of the attacks by enemies of Judaism. The recent rise in Nazi-inspired propaganda, accordingly, brought with it a recrudescence of the accusations made against this store- house of Jewish lore. The falsification of Talmudic texts and the distortion of their teachings are spread with increased vigor throughout the English-speaking world. The fact that these libels have been exposed repeatedly by the testimony of Jewish as well as Christian scholars has not deterred present day purveyors of these slanders from at- tempting to portray the Talmud as the fountainhead of an inferior and unethical morality. It may seem incredible to the average person that the Jewish religion, mother of all monotheistic religions of justice and mercy, should need de- fense against such accusations. But this study is less a defense and refutation than an analysis of the way these propagandists work, and the combination of unscrupulous distortion and crudity which characterizes their attack. It is also an ex- posure of the real motives for which these attacks are only an opening wedge. WHAT THE TALMUD IS The Talmud is a record of opinions and discussions on all phases of law and life culled from the utterances of those out- standing Jewish teachers who functioned in the academies of Palestine and Babylonia during the first five centuries of the 1939 TALMUDIC FORGERIES 7 common era. The earliest layer of the Talmud is the Mish- nah, a product of Palestinian scholarship and written in a clear, lucid Hebrew. -

It is a story with many implications for the way Jews view women’s bodies, intermarriage with Gentiles, pride, and zealous violence. The fate of Dinah was used to justify an absolute ban on intermarriage in the Second Temple Period, and is being used by feminists today to reclaim women’s voices in the Bible. -

More names could be mentioned. You probably noticed that this list of names included all authors of the books of the New Testaments, with the exception of James, Jude and the unknown author of the Letter to the Hebrews. -

religions Article The Anti‑Samaritan Attitude as Reflected in Rabbinic Midrashim Andreas Lehnardt Faculty of Protestant Theology, Johannes Gutenberg‑University Mainz, 55122 Mainz, Germany; lehnardt@uni‑mainz.de Abstract: Samaritans, as a group within the ranges of ancient ‘Judaisms’, are often mentioned in Talmud and Midrash. As comparable social–religious entities, they are regarded ambivalently by the rabbis. First, they were viewed as Jews, but from the end of the Tannaitic times, and especially after the Bar Kokhba revolt, they were perceived as non‑Jews, not reliable about different fields of Halakhic concern. Rabbinic writings reflect on this change in attitude and describe a long ongoing conflict and a growing anti‑Samaritan attitude. This article analyzes several dialogues betweenrab‑ bis and Samaritans transmitted in the Midrash on the book of Genesis, Bereshit Rabbah. In four larger sections, the famous Rabbi Me’ir is depicted as the counterpart of certain Samaritans. The analyses of these discussions try to show how rabbinic texts avoid any direct exegetical dispute over particular verses of the Torah, but point to other hermeneutical levels of discourse and the rejection of Samari‑ tan claims. These texts thus reflect a remarkable understanding of some Samaritan convictions, and they demonstrate how rabbis denounced Samaritanism and refuted their counterparts. The Rabbi Me’ir dialogues thus are an impressive literary witness to the final stages of the parting of ways of these diverging religious streams. 148 ANALYSIS OF THE l!'OURTH GOSPEL. [BOOK Il writings ascribe to the person of Christ in relation to the human soul absolutely the same central position as the Old Testament ascribes to God. For whom were absolute confi dence and love reserved by Moses and the prophets ? Jesus claims them for Himself in the Synoptics, and that in the name of our eternal salvation. Would Jewish Monotheism, so strict and so jealous of God's rights, have permitted Jesus to take such a position, had He not had the distinct conscious ness that in the background of His human existence there was a divine personality? He cannot as a faithful Jew desire to be to us what He asks to be in the Synoptics, unless He is what He claims to be in J ohn.1 This general conclusion is reinforced by a large number of particular facts in the same writings. We have just seen how, in Luke, He who comes after the forerunner is called in the preceding words the Lord their God. In Mark, the person of the Son is placed above even the most exalted creatures: "But of that day knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son [ during the time of His humilia tion], but the Father" (xiii. 32). In Matthew, the Son is. placed between the Father and the Holy Spirit, the breath of God : " Baptize all nations in the name of the Father, of the· Son, and of the Holy Ghost" (xxviii. 19 ). In the parable of the husbandmen, Jesus represents Himself, in contrast to the servants sent before Him, as the son and heir of the master of the vineyard (Matt. -

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN TEXTS ROBE R TO OU R O Adventist School of Theology Sagunto, Valencia, Spain Introduction In 1902, the noted Assyriologist Friedrich Delitzsch presented a series of lectures on comparative studies under the auspices of the German Oriental Society. Delitzsch’s lectures, entitled “Babel und Bibel,” claimed that the literature of the Bible was dependent on, and even borrowed from, the literature of Mesopotamia. He questioned the appropriateness of the traditional theological terminology used to describe the Bible (e.g., revelation, inspiration) in light of its now evident dependency.1 Delitzsch’s work spawned a movement called “Pan-Babylonianism,” which argued that all world myths and Christian Scriptures (OT and NT) were simply versions of Babylonian mythology.2 As the series developed, however, it became clear that the lecturer’s motives were not entirely pure. His interest was to minimize the values of OT teaching so that it could be contrasted with that of the NT.3 The widespread interest in finding connections between the Bible and other ANE cultures has bred its own reaction in the warning raised by several scholars against exaggerating the importance of such similarities, a practice baptized with the name “parallelomania.”4 Of particular concern has been the often tacit assumption that such parallels can be construed as evidence for a genetic connection between the cultures that share them. Despite such warnings, the pendulum of biblical studies has continued to swing back and forth with remarkable regularity over the generations, as initial archeological discoveries have led to enthusiastic claims of similarities with various biblical practices and the implied, if not always stated, conclusion that these constitute the source for the biblical practice in question. -
