THE NATIONAL CONSERVATORY lays the ground work of a thorough musical education and afterwards carries the structure to completion. Its pro- fessors have baen appointed without consideration of expense, and wholly on their merits and reputation; and they form an Admirable Facultt/, with no end in view but the impartment of knowledge and the consequent elevation of ihe public taste, with no other revenue than that contributed by lovers of music, and the very small returns derived from the nominal tuition charged, and with no contribution whatever from talented candidates for admission unable to pay for high-class tuition. It is believed that the National Conservatory addresses itself to all patriotic and music-loving Americans as a National Enterprise of the utmost importance in the artistic future of the land. It has now been in existence six years : it enlists the services of fifty-three instructors, some of interna- tional reputation. Its actual pupils number 348, and has supplied tuition since its establishment to 2,227 students. Purpose and Scone. The Conservatory is open to all persons evincing sufficient talent to justify their admission. The full course of instruction covers from 3 to 5 years, but varies with the aptitude and diligence of students. • The Vocal Course includes Singing, Solfeggio, Piano, Diction, History of Music, Deportment, Fencing, and Chorus. The Instrumental Studies include Piano, Organ, Harp, Violin, Viola, Violoncello, Contrabass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Cornet, Trombone, etc. An Orchestral Class is formed, and also a special Children's Solfeggio Class. Shortly after the production of "Don Giovanni" at Prague, in 1787, Haydn said: "Were it possible that I could impress every friend of music, particularly among the great, with the deep musical intelligence of the i inimitable works of Mozart,— that emotion of the soul with which they affect me, and in which I both comprehend and feel them,— the nations would contend together for the possession of such a gem. Prague ought to retain him, and reward him well, too, else the history of great genius is melancholy, and offers posterity but slight encouragement to exertion, which is the reason, alas ! that many hopeful and aspiring spirits are re- pressed. Plentiful among Haydn's writings are expressions of admiration for Mozart, who was once his pupil. The year 1788 is a memorable one in the history of music, because of the productiveness of Mozart. In that year, he composed, besides a number of smaller pieces, a pianoforte sonata, a concerto in D for pianoforte, the "appendix airs" to " Don Giovanni," a trio in E for pianoforte, violin, and violoncello, two other trios for the same instruments, a sonatina for pianoforte and violin in F, the accompaniments to " Acis and Galatea," and, during a period of six weeks from June 26, the three symphonies — his last and greatest — in E-flat, G minor, and C (Jupiter). The actual time Mozart gave to the composition of the G minor symphony was ten days,— a feat unparalleled save by Handel, who composed " The Messiah " in a month and " Israel in Egypt " in seventeen days. But Mozart did not dive into his grab-bag of old materials for his G minor symphony, as Handel did for themes for " Israel " (a work to which early Italians and Germans contributed some- thing). Of the three greater symphonies by Mozart, many rank the G minor " first.
