Set by Sloan Rolando, 2003. Text: Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery TONE 6 R. Cantor: The bodiless powers of cherubim glorify You * with never-ending hymns, * and the six- winged seraphim greatly magnify You. * All the host of angels praise You with thrice-holy hymns. * For You are Father before all worlds, * with Your Son, also from everlasting, * and the Spirit of Life, co-equal in honor, // manifesting the undivided Trinity. L. Cantor: Most holy Virgin Theotokos * and eyewitness apostles and servants of the Word, * with the whole company of martyrs and prophets * who have attained eternal life: * Pray fervently for us all, for we are in great distress, * that being delivered from the snares of the evil one, * we may proclaim the Angelic Hymn: * Holy, Holy, Holy, Thrice-Holy Lord, // have mercy on us and save us! Amen. THE CREED R. Cantor: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light; true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. And He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And the third day He rose, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spoke by the prophets. In one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. • Kievan Chant
Kievan Chant The origins of Kievan Chant date to the period when the western and southwestern parts of the Russian metropolitanate were under the rule of Lithuanian and Polish kings (late 16th—early 17th centuries). Although Slavic musicologists treat its early development as a local variant of the Znamenny Chant, its evolution out of the ancient Znamenny Chant did not occur “without a certain influence from Western European music.”1 It became more than a regional chant when it was brought to Moscow by church singers from Kiev during the time of Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich and Patriarch Nikon (mid-‐‑seventeenth century).2 Kievan Chant is a complete chant that contains melodies for all hymnographical groups: stichera, troparia, prokeimena, kanons,. etc In its melodic content, it is not nearly as rich or varied as the Znamenny Chant, as its melodic lines are often filled with simple recitative with very limited cadential phrases. In present-‐‑day use Kievan Chant can be divided into five different classifications of melodies that comprise each “Tone”. Within a given Tone these melodies, with few exceptions, do not have any relationship to each other. These five classifications represent repertoires of melodies for the singing of: 1) Stichera 2) Stichera refrains 3) Troparia 4) Prokeimena 5) Heirmoi (Kanons) Part I Kievan Chant for the Singing of Stichera Stichera (sticheron, sing.) are poetic verses of varying content and length, having anywhere from as few as two lines to as many as twelve. Stichera are commonly inserted between the verses of a psalm in such a way that the psalm verse precedes the 1 Johann von Gardner, Russian Church Singing, Volume 1, Orthodox Worship and Hymnography (Crestwood, NY, SVS Press, 1980) 105.

Michael Brown Hal Leonard Publishing - Grade 2 A Transcription of a Russian Orthodox Anthem for Concert Band Composer Background Pavel Grigoryevich Chesnokov (12 Oct 1877 - 14 Mar 1944) was possibly the most prominent Russian composer of sacred choral works during his time. Out of his 500 choral works, about 400 of them sacred. However, what is interesting is that Chesnokov was better known for this choral conducting. His reputation earned him a position on staff at the Moscow Conservatory (the same school he attended in his youth studying violin, piano, and voice). Chesnokov was praised by the Soviets for his skills in choral conducting, though they remained hostile to his sacred music throughout his lifetime. Chesnokov was a devout follower of the Russian Orthodox Church and was inspired to write most of his works for worship in that faith. His best-known composition, one of the works he is remembered for today, is Salvation is Created (1912), a Communion hymn based on a Ukrainian (Kievan) chant melody. In 1930 Chesnokov completed his landmark book The Choir and How to Direct it. This is considered his most significant contribution to choral studies. It was not published until 1940 but was so popular that it was reprinted numerous times. This book is important to conductors as Chesnokov makes references to interpretation, staggered breathing, and phrasing. During the Russian revolution (Bolshevik Revolution) his sacred music writing halted. Chesnokov was forced to stop composing sacred music by the anti-religious Soviets.

A Feast of Carols MENDELSSOHN CLUB OF PHILADELPHIA December 13, 2014 at 5pm St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Alan Harler, conductor of Chestnut Hill Michael Stairs, organ 22 East Chestnut Hill Avenue with Philadelphia, PA 19118 The Mendelssohn Brass Please Join Us On Sunday, February 8, 2015 As We Re-create A Milestone In Musical History… On Sunday, February 8, 2015, the Bach/Mendelssohn St. Matthew Passion will have its North American premiere when Mendelssohn Club returns to the glorious landmark at Girard College. This historic masterwork of Johann Sebastian Bach is revered today as one of the great masterpieces of Western civilization. Our own Alan Harler will see one of his career dreams come to life when he conducts this legendary version of The St. Matthew Passion. This majestic and deeply moving two-hour oratorio featuring the stunning talents of soprano Susanna Phillips, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, tenor Yusuke Fujii and bass Eric Owens, along with The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and organist Michael Stairs. When the 20-year-old Mendelssohn conducted a groundbreaking perfor- mance of his edition of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829, it inspired a wide- spread revival of Bach’s music. It also fueled the growth of choral societies across Europe and the United States including the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, which was founded in 1874. By all accounts, the thousand people who were able to witness the concert were overwhelmed by the beauty and power of this masterpiece. The concert turned out to be one of the most significant performances in the annals of music history.

  • An Abbreviated Heirmologion
Journal of the International Society for Orthodox Church Music Vol. 4 (1), Section II: Conference papers, pp. 63–69 ISSN 2342-1258 https://journal.fi/jisocm An Abbreviated Heirmologion Paul Kappanadze [email protected] This paper describes the process behind the on-going work at St Tikhon of Zadonsk Monastery (South Canaan, Pennsylvania) to produce an abbreviated and practical Heirmologion to meet the needs of English-speaking monasteries and parishes within the tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Heirmologion is unique among liturgical books in that it contains a single genre of hymn: the heirmos (Gr. Εἱρμὸς, Slv. Ирмoсъ), that is, the hymn at the beginning of each of the nine odes of a canon, most often sung at Matins and Compline. There does not, as yet, exist a comprehensive or widely available anthology of heirmoi in the English language. The music staff at St Tikhon’s Monastery,1 therefore, is endeavouring to fill this gap in the library of liturgical books in English. The compilation of an abbreviated Heirmologion in English was first attempted in 2011, but only the text of the Tone 1 heirmoi from the Octoechos was compiled. Four years later the idea for an English Heirmologion was revived by the need for such a collection at St Tikhon’s Monastery. Theodore Heckman, former music director at St Tikhon’s Seminary, contributed a considerable amount of work by notating heirmoi from the Sunday Octoechos, Menaion, Triodion, and Pentecostarion, primarily for mixed choirs. Archimandrite Sergius, the monastery’s current abbot and former music director, has taken further steps in compiling the text for heirmoi from the weekday Octoechos canons.

  • Samohlasen Tone Four in the Carpatho-Rusyn Prostopînije The
Samohlasen Tone Four in the Carpatho-Rusyn Prostopînije The omission by oversight from Bokšaj’s Церковное Простопѣнїе въ Мукачевской греко- Каѳолической Епархіи установленное (1906) of the model samohlasen of Tone 4 would appear unfortunate at first glance. However, the practical disadvantage cannot have amounted to anything; a quest for a Rusyn who could not sing this melody, according to the custom of his or her parish, from memory would have been fruitless. And in fact the version of this melody sung in the cathedral of Uzhhorod by its cantor at that time, Iosyf Malynyč, was published; only not with the Slavonic text. The chant book was published also in a Hungarian-language edition—Boksay János and Malinics Jósef, Egyházi Közénekek (Uzhhorod: 1906), p. 22— and in this the sticheron is printed in its expected place. Bokšaj’s was the only collection of Carpatho-Rusyn chant to attain widespread recognition, and when it became hard to obtain, several collections based on it were published. -ntimate familiarity with the chant and a supply of trained cantors were more difficult to maintain among Rusyn Americans in later years, and in any case the omission marred the systematic presentation of the eight tones, so in these collections the lacuna was filled. In each case, it was filled independently, without reference to the Hungarian Bokšaj or to any other Bokšaj spin-off. The earliest of these offshoots was compiled and published (by samizdat) by Theodore Racyn (Ratsin, Ratsyn), a cantor in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, who in 1925 brought out an expanded edition, the text produced on the typewriter and the notes written by hand.

  • MINISTRIES and MISSION 84: Church Music the Roots of Early Christian Chant (Byzantine and West Roman) (By Elias Fotopoulos)
UNIT 3C: MINISTRIES AND MISSION 84: Church Music The Roots of early Christian Chant (Byzantine and west Roman) (by Elias Fotopoulos) Many times or almost every time when I play J S Bach or Mozart on my piano I have these wonderful feelings of amazement, and immediate departure to other worlds. Questions tend to interrupt all the time. “How did they do it?” I ask. I wish I was there to see them composing or performing. Well, I have the same questions every Sunday when I am singing Matins and Divine Liturgy, the Great Doxology, the Only Begotten Son, the Trisagion and others. Here the amazement is out of this world and I have the desire to travel back in time to the early years of Christianity, the early years of the Church. What were their services? Were they similar to ours? How did they sing? Who taught them? For about the first ten years of Christianity, the Church comprised mainly Jewish converts. The early Christians were in the habit of attending the Temple daily. Until the Council of Jerusalem (c. 50 A.D.), generally speaking, new Gentile converts to Christianity had to convert to Judaism before becoming Christians. From the Acts of the Apostles we understand that the Apostles used to meet daily, praying and chanting glorifying God at the third, sixth and ninth hour. With hymns and prayers they used to bury their dead on departure. They sang hymns at the Dormition of Theotokos and St Stephen’s burial. Liturgical Jewish music used both voices and musical instruments.
