After suffering a period of relative obscurity between the 1920s and the late 1980s (with the notable exception of Sveshnikov’s classic recording—our cat. no. A128), this work has now assumed its rightful place among the great masterpieces of the world-wide choral repertoire. What, then, distinguishes this recording from its numerous predecessors? Conductor Charles Bruffy has had a long-standing fascination with Russian choral music. In 1996, with the Kansas City Chorale, he recorded Rachmaninoff’s Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, op. 31 (our cat. no. A045). With the partnered Kansas City Chorale and the Phoenix Chorale he has performed both ★★★★ Gretchaninoff’s All-Night Vigil, op. 59, and Passion Week, op. 58; his recording of the latter work (our 1/2 cat. no. A115) won a Grammy™ Award in 2008 for the “Best Enginneerd Album, Classical”). To this recording of Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil, Bruffy and the combined 56-voice Kansas City and Phoenix Chorales bring a crystal-like clarity of sound that allows Rachmaninoff’s rich choral textures to emerge as the composer undoubtedly intended; it should be remembered that Rachmaninoff’s choral sound ideal—the Moscow Synodal Choir—was a choir of men and boys (sopranos and altos). Bruffy views this music primarily in its vertical dimension, lingering and delighting in the choral sonorities in what sometimes seems an endless fashion.

In May of that year I went to the monastery in order to photograph musical manuscripts. I also attended divine services, to notice that the quality of worship had greatly improved since my last visit of a few days in 2005. One reason for this was that after a break of several years, there once again were singers in the brotherhood. At some point during my visit, the cantor tentatively approved me to sing. My first engagement was a Panikhida at the cemetery. After that I heard the words: “Welcome also to the kliros.” I then found myself singing the services of Pentecost in the choir of the brotherhood. It consisted of two monastics and me. This has been the composition of the choir on many occasions ever since. In August of 2015 I was returning to the monastery to gather more materials. In the train I received a phone call from Archimandrite Sergei. He explained that the brotherhood was going on a pilgrimage to Russia. The cantor they had hired had had to cancel, and now he asked if I could by any chance sing the services during that week.

LEE INMAN – composer/arranger, lecturer, teacher, and ensemble coach – has played Baroque cello and viola da gamba for over forty years. Sometimes he tapped his fingers nervously against his cheek; occasionally he nodded Dhis head rhythmically in time with the music. In the whole of his productive career, remarked Soviet Composer Dmitry Shostakovich, he had “never heard so many of my works performed in so short a period.” Time Music: The Two Dmitrys; September 14, 1962 In 1962 Shostakovich was invited to attend the Edinburgh Festival, Scotland’s annual arts festival and Europe’s largest and most prestigious. An important precursor to this invitation had been the outstanding British premiere in 1960 of the First Cello Concerto – which to an extent had helped focus the British public’s attention on Shostakovich’s evolving repertoire. Week one of the Festival saw performances of the First, Third and Fifth String Quartets; the Cello Concerto and the song-cycle Satires with Galina Vishnevskaya and Rostropovich. 31 DSCH JOURNAL No. 37 – July 2012 Edinburgh International Festival 1962 Rostropovich and Vishnevskaya in Edinburgh Week two heralded performances of the Preludes & Fugues for Piano, arias from Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the Sixth, Eighth and Ninth Symphonies, the Third, Fourth, Seventh and Eighth String Quartets and Shostakovich’s orches- tration of Musorgsky’s Khovanschina. Finally in week three the Fourth, Tenth and Twelfth Symphonies were per- formed along with the Violin Concerto (No. 1), the Suite from Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the Three Fantastic Dances, the Cello Sonata and From Jewish Folk Poetry.
