This con- tribution argues from within Wikipedia's multidisciplinary consensus-driven space in which propositional knowledge is given priority that it would be essential for ent- ries on fiction to present non-propositional knowledge as being one of its hallmarks. For this aim, a special concept is developed that is designed to function as the stu- dy's formal object: Erlesnis\ (which in German is a pun that combines Erlebnis\ " " { adventure experience { and lesen\ { reading). It is defined as non-propositional " knowledge that has been acquired in an individual reading process. Writing about one's own Erlesnis in new ways is being tried out in essays on Traveling on One Leg (1989) by Herta Mueller, Save the Reaper (1998) by Alice Munro, Alfred and Emily (2008) by Doris Lessing and rein GOLD (2013) by Elfriede Jelinek respectively. -

Marjorie Perloff In the English-speaking world, the awarding of the 2004 Nobel Prize for literature to the Austrian novelist-playwright Elfriede Jelinek has been met—when met at all—by puzzled incredulity or downright outrage. Last fall, British papers like The Sunday Times and The Scotsman chuckled that the Nobel could go to an obscure Austrian feminist communist “porn author,” whose small independent publisher in Britain, Serpent’s Tail, supposedly sold only 270 copies of The Piano Teacher in 2003, “while three other novels [Women as Lovers, Wonderful Wonderful Times, and Lust] sold barely 50 copies each” (Scotsman, 8 Oct. 2004). Other papers were less amused. In The Daily Standard, Stephen Schwartz declared: “The infamous snobs of the Swedish Academy. have returned to their habit of awarding the Nobel Prize for Literature to an unknown, undistinguished, leftist fanatic. This time they got a two-fer shot at destroying literary standards, since Jelinek's writings mainly verge on gross pornography.” This sentiment was echoed in The New Republic, where Ruth Franklin concluded that Jelinek's sexual and political notions are so “appalling” that they should have disqualified her from the prize. WS/LT 351 THE WOMAN AS WRITER AND PERSPECTIVE IN AUSTRIAN LITERATURE AFTER 1945 IES Abroad Vienna DESCRIPTION: Austrian literature over the centuries has been dominated by men – with few notable exceptions such as Hrosvit v. Gandersheim, Marie Frf. v. Ebner-Eschenbach, Paula v. Preradovic, Bertha v. Suttner. After WW II, there is an increase of female women writers not only in numbers, but in importance. Since 1945, female authors in Austria have successfully tried to break free from the limitations women were subject to in earlier times, so successful in fact that they have become leading figures in the shaping and defining of Austrian literature as a whole. This course tries to explain the phenomenon of women in Austrian literature since 1945. It comprises the full scope of female thought from the ever present ”Vergangenheitsbewältigung” to radical feminist views on society and social interaction in the seventies and eighties, and on to recent novels concerning new problems of the female in a changing society, such as raising children as single mothers, or dealing with migration in Europe. It will also deal with the problem of changing one’s sex, and check whether a male perspective on female life bears validity. CREDITS: 3 credits CONTACT HOURS: 45 hours LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English PREREQUISITES: None METHOD OF PRESENTATION: Lectures; group discussions. Several shorter texts will be read by the entire class and provide the basic structure and chronological frame to the course, one movie adaptations of a novel by Elfriede Jelinek will be shown and discussed. In addition, each student will be asked to read a novel and present it to the class.
