8 CONGREGATION KOL AMI • PUBLICATION NUMBER 4 FOR THE YEAR 2019 MAZEL TOV TO OUR B’NAI MITZVAH

BENYAMIN MALLINGER, OCTOBER 19TH

Bennie lives in Las Vegas, NV with his mother, and in Salt Lake City, UT with his father and step- mother. He is a seasoned traveler, visiting far-off places such as: Juneau, AK – Providence, RI – and Paris, France. In school, Bennie’s favorite subject is French, and in his free time he enjoys video games and biking. This year Bennie became a first degree black belt in Taekwondo.

EMILY FISHER, OCTOBER 26TH

Emily is the fourth of our four Fisher children. As the youngest, Emily likes her job of family instigator, but dislikes being relegated to the middle back seat of the car. Emily spends most of her free time aggressively negotiating what she believes is her fair share of household chores.

Emily loves to spend her summers at Camp Sabra in Missouri. She has been going to Camp Sabra since she was an infant. Her favorite summer activities include dying her hair fun colors and wake-boarding behind the ski-boat. She loves her summers at camp and wishes they would last all year long.

Emily was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She moved to Salt Lake City five years ago and has enjoyed making new friends. Never having seen a mountain before, she now spends as many weekends as possible skiing and snowboarding with her family and friends. Emily is currently an 8th grade student at Churchill Junior High School. Emily is active in Girl Scouts and would be happy to sell you Girl Scout cookies during the selling season. She is also very involved in competitive gymnastics. Most of Emily’s weekday afternoons are spent in the gym preparing her beam, vault, parallel bars, and floor routines and many weekends are spent competing with her teammates from GTC gymnastics.

Emily has chosen Heart-Full Handbags for her Mitzvah project, a project in conjunction with Jewish Family Services. She is collecting new handbags and personal items to give as gifts to low-income women in the Salt Lake community during the holidays. If you would like to help her with this project, please talk to her after this weekend.

Emily would like to thank Cantor Wendy Bat-Sarah, David Asman, and all her Rafi Schwartz Religious School teachers who have done a wonderful job preparing her for this day. Emily would also like to thank Rabbi Samuel L. Spector for helping her prepare her D’var Torah.

CONGREGATION KOL AMI • PUBLICATION NUMBER 4 FOR THE YEAR 2019 9 MAZEL TOV TO OUR B’NAI MITZVAH

MAYA LEVIN, NOVEMBER 2ND

My name is Maya Levin, and I am a seventh grader at Eastmont Middle School. I have a younger sister, Riley, and a younger brother, Sean. Our family also had two adorable cats named Luna and BFG (Big Fluffy Guy).

I was born in Florida and my family moved to Utah when I was five years old. I have been a student at Rafi Schwartz Religious school since Kindergarten.

Gymnastics is a huge part of my life. Most of my time outside of school is spent in the gym. I have been a competitive gymnast since I was seven years old and currently train 22 hours per week. This year I will be competing as level 9 gymnast for Olympus Gymnastics. My favorite event is beam and my least favorite event is vault. My goal is to earn a gymnastics scholarship to college.

Between gym and school there is not much time to do much else. When I do have free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and hanging out with my friends. I also like to read, play board and card games, make up dances with my sister, throw darts, play with my cats, and do arts and crafts projects.

LIA TRELOAR, NOVEMBER 9TH

Lia is 13 years old and is excited about her Bat Mitzvah. She loves to read, partiularly fantasy books, and has her own mini library. Lia also plays soccer and enjoys skiing, so naturally she loves the mountains of Utah. Her favorite candy is Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups, which is theme for her Bat Mitzvah. She is looking forward to celebrating with family from all over the country and her cousins from Germany.

For Lia's Bat Mitzvah project, she is working with Gigi’s Playhouse. There, she works and plays with children with Downs Syndrome.

DOVAN LAPIN, NOVEMBER 16TH

Dovan is the third generation of the Lapin family at Kol Ami. He loves traveling, video games, and building things with his little sister, Eliana. Computer and video games are what he love doing in his spare time and wants to build that passion into his future. He also loves swimming and is on his third year as a member of the Hidden Valley Swimming Team.

Dovan has an inquisitive and perceptive mind. He learned to walk before his first birthday, at 18-months taught himself to read, and by age two was able to complete entire books. His sharp mind serves him well at Draper Park Middle School where he is in the Honors English Program and in 8th grade Honors Math. Dovan is a voracious reader and his favorite genres are fantasy and science-fiction such as Enders Game series by Orson Scott Card.

A gentle soul who possesses a deep inner strength and confidence, Dovan is just as comfortable being alone as he is with friends and family. While we don't always know what he is thinking, his words and actions speak to an individual highly aware of people and the world around him. He is always the first to open the door for his mom and his grandmas and is a loving and compassionate big brother to Eliana.

We are so proud of Dovan and can’t wait to celebrate his big day with the entire congregation. The Lapin family has deep ties to this community and the support we have received over the years has been humbling. We are very grateful to the Rabbi, the Cantor, and to all our friends and family.

HAYDEN GARBER, DECEMBER 14TH

Hayden Emma Garber, daughter of Melissa and Mike Garber and sister to Ethan and Zoe, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on December 14, 2019. Hayden is in the 8th grade at Churchill Junior High in Salt Lake City. She is a figure skater year round, is a member of the Murray Silver Blades Figure Skating Club, and participates in competitions both local and out of state. She loves to rollerblade, ski at Alta, and hike in Millcreek Canyon. She also helps take care of our 1-year-old Saint Bernard named Harley. Prior to arriving in Salt Lake City 2 ½ years ago, Hayden lived in Keller, TX, West Palm Beach, FL, Jacksonville, FL, and Columbia, SC.

We would like to thank Rabbi Samuel L. Spector, Cantor Wendy Bat Sarah, and David Asman for helping Hayden prepare for her special day.

WHAT IS A MITZVAH? It is a commandment from G-d. Who should do Mitzvot? All Jews. Why? Because it is our responsibility as Jews to repair the world and help our friends and neighbors and each other. When? When someone has lost a loved one. When someone is ill. When someone is home bound. When someone has been hospitalized. When a senior citizen needs help or a ride. When someone needs cheering up.

By Carol Hochstadt YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN MEMORIAM

As people think about preparing for their own or a relative’s “final Our Community resting place,” questions start popping into their heads. Many Mourns the Loss of questions can be answered by reading our Rules & Regulations document — always available on our website, Bobbie Walker www.jewishcemeteryutah.org (“Download Documents” tab). Rochelle Wenger's Sister There is no such thing as a “dumb” question, and we encourage you to ask and resolve any uncertainties you may have. One easy way to Lillian Elsa Gebhardt ask a question is by using the “Contact Us” tab on our website. In Jim Gebhardt's Mother this article, we will answer a few questions that were asked by people in the past few months and which may have occurred to you. Bernie Tran Arnie Tran's Father

How long must someone be a Kol Ami member in John David Marks, Sr. Kol Ami Member order to qualify for the member discount? One year. This rule was enacted because of people who became William Douglas Coller Husband of Faye Lincoln members just days prior to dying, presumably to take advantage of the discount. Ruth Shirah Kol Ami Member, Jennifer McMurrough's Mother May I reserve two plots for myself? Sylvia Silverstein Weishaus One person can only occupy one plot, so he or she may only reserve Rochelle Wenger's Cousin one. Although we have enough open plots to last many years into the future, our land is finite and we must think of future generations. Elaine Schwartz Having extra “breathing room” for a deceased person or allowing Lee Schwartz's Mother for an oversized monument is not the best use of our resources. Irene Stone Tannenbaum Kol Ami Member May we have a Conservative or Orthodox funeral service in the Reform B’nai Israel Cemetery? This question comes up most frequently in an interfaith marriage. The Jewish person needs to be buried in B’nai Israel in order to be with the spouse, but he or she wants to have the ritual washing (tahara) and a service that reflects his or her preferred Traditional practice. Absolutely, this is permitted. Whether the graveside service is Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox is determined by the clergy performing the service, so your wishes in this regard should www.jewishcemeteryutah.org

26 CONGREGATION KOL AMI • PUBLICATION NUMBER 4 FOR THE YEAR 2019 be communicated to the clergy. Ritual washing and wearing a shroud are optional in B’nai Israel, but certainly permitted. Regarding having a Reform service in Montefiore or Shaare Tzedek, the answer is less clear-cut. Certainly, clergy can do the service in English and use prayers from a Reform prayer book, but whereas it would be permitted to include flowers in a B’nai Israel burial you would not include flowers in the Traditional cemeteries. Please keep in mind that any flowers brought to B’nai Israel for a burial must be removed by at the conclusion of the service. The rules of our Traditional cemeteries do require ritual washing and wearing a shroud, regardless of whether the person preferred Reform Judaism. Basically, you should understand the rules of the cemetery you choose and ensure that your family is comfortable with them.

May we move a relative who has been buried elsewhere to one of Kol Ami’s cemeteries? We only allow reinterment in “exceptional circumstances,” and such a move must also be approved by Kol Ami’s Senior Rabbi. Merely reuniting family members is not considered “exceptional;” we favor letting the dead rest in peace in the grave where the original interment took place. What might be considered “exceptional” circumstances? One example would be a person who was listed as missing in action (MIA) and was later identified via DNA or another means. Another would be a person killed in a disaster, who had to be buried temporarily due to circumstances beyond the control of the family. If the permanent burial was expected to be in our cemetery, moving the deceased as soon as possible might be permitted. Disinterment and reinterment are very expensive and intrusive. The decision as to where to bury your loved one should be considered permanent and, therefore, very careful thought and consideration in advance are recommended.
