Hurray! I was going to the planetarium with my mom and dad. I was sure it going to be a terrific day. When we entered I told my parents “ Wow’’ because there was so many amazing items like still trains to get to do that same day. I got to go onto a train, helicopters, and trackers. We spotted a video of how plants grow. We only saw a minute but I thought it was amazing. Then we set off into the animal room. There were videos of how a lot of animals were born. There was only one more room left. It was the fairytale room. There is only one big light gray castle with a lot of rooms in that room. The castle has all different kinds of princesses like snow white in that castle. Finally, it was time for us to go home. I was so unhappy because I didn’t want to leave, it was such a great day! I will never ever forget that day! Once ,I remember me and my little sister “Nicole “ always made races to find the most seashells . “ I bet ya I would win Natalie!” She blabbered out to my face . “ Oh ya!” I spoke proudly hoping that I would win . At the end it was all a tie , Nicole uttered that she had more, obviously she was lying ! “ See look I have 30 you have 29 ,so ha !” She spoke in her bratty voice . “ Nicole !” I yelled , “ Why don’t we do something else ?” “ Okay , like what ? “ She questioned me . “ How about let’s do something with mom and dad and Jessica !” I stammered with excitement knowing that I was planning something quite amazing! [ if do say so myself!] My plan was to get the others to burry my mom in the sun while she was getting her tan on what it seemed like , gold silky sand that was at times felt spongy because of the water rushing up from the bay. This was going to be funny ! “Dad Jessica come over here !” They quickly rushed towards me . “ Our plan is to get mom and bury her in the sand !” The others agreed . We were slowly but surely tip toeing towards mom . It took a while but we did it ! She looked like a mermaid ! My dad took a bunch of pictures ! Good thing she is a rough sleeper !But the worst thing about this silly prank was that eventually she woke up,and eventually she got mad!Once she stood up she was covered in sand head to toe ! But now she realized an important lesson ,to never trust us !!! And today I realized an important lesson too, and that was making moments and creating memories that you will carry on for life !!! • The Nature of Hellenistic Domestic Sculpture in Its Cultural and Spatial Contexts
THE NATURE OF HELLENISTIC DOMESTIC SCULPTURE IN ITS CULTURAL AND SPATIAL CONTEXTS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Craig I. Hardiman, B.Comm., B.A., M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. Mark D. Fullerton, Advisor Dr. Timothy J. McNiven _______________________________ Advisor Dr. Stephen V. Tracy Graduate Program in the History of Art Copyright by Craig I. Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans.

Cover design by Jeff Belizaire ABOUT THIS BOOK Why does earlier Greek painting (Archaic/Classical) seem so clear and—deceptively— simple while the latest painting (Hellenistic/Graeco-Roman) is so much more complex but also familiar to us? Is there a single, coherent explanation that will cover this remarkable range? What can we recover from ancient documents and practices that can objectively be called “Greek color theory”? Present day historians of ancient art consistently conceive of color in terms of triads: red, yellow, blue or, less often, red, green, blue. This habitude derives ultimately from the color wheel invented by J.W. Goethe some two centuries ago. So familiar and useful is his system that it is only natural to judge the color orientation of the Greeks on its basis. To do so, however, assumes, consciously or not, that the color understanding of our age is the definitive paradigm for that subject.

  • The Sculpture of Jacques Lipchitz
The sculpture of Jacques Lipchitz Author Hope, Henry R. (Henry Radford), 1905- 1989 Date 1954 Publisher The Museum of Modern Art: Distributed by Simon & Schuster Exhibition URL www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/2913 The Museum of Modern Art's exhibition history— from our founding in 1929 to the present—is available online. It includes exhibition catalogues, primary documents, installation views, and an index of participating artists. MoMA © 2017 The Museum of Modern Art The Sculpture of Jacques Lipchitz 96 pages; 100 plates $3.00 The Sculpture of Jacques Lipchitz BY HENRY R. HOPE No other sculptor of Lipchitz' generation can show such multifarious variety of style or so great a range of feeling. His art matured under the stimulus, and within the discipline, of cubism whose sculptural potentialities he brilliantly ex plored for over ten years. Since the thirties, his work has shown a vigor and eloquence which allies him with the tradition of Bernini and Rodin. Central to Lipchitz' evolution as an artist is the transition from the impersonal collective style of cubism to an art more personal in accent and theme. This transition is studied in detail by Mr. Hope, who gives special attention to his transparents, the revolutionary, small, open- form bronzes, cast in the difficult "lost wax" technique which marked the turning point in his own art and were to have widespread influence. In this first monograph on the artist in English, one hundred plates illustrate all periods of his career, including each of his major large-scale sculptures. Related drawings supplement the sculpture, and many small terracotta sketches document the original inspiration for several master works.
