6 WWW.NORTHAMPTONTOWNSHIP.COM From the Building and Codes Department t their meeting on May 24, 2017, the Board of Supervisors approved design guidelines for Athe Village Overlay Districts of Richboro and Holland. Specifically, these guidelines are amendments to our zoning and subdivision and land development ordinances. Overall, they serve as a framework to establish design and architectural standards in the Village Overlay Districts of Richboro and Holland addressing facades, roof styles, site design, landscape design, and streetscape. The objective is to define uniform standards to further the vision for the Village Overlay District. The guidelines have been prepared by the Bucks County Planning Commission in conjunction with the Township Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors. Ithas been an exciting initiative for the enhancement of our commercial and business areas of the Township. Elements of the design guidelines can be seen in the redevelopment of the former Davis Pontiac site in Richboro, which serves as an example of the standards that mesh architectural and site design. As future projects move forward, we look forward to the furtherance of the implementation of the design guidelines and a consistent vision for our Village Overlay areas.

WWW.NORTHAMPTONTOWNSHIP.COM 7 MIRACLE LEAGUE PLANS IMPROVEMENTS AT THE MUNICIPAL PARK PLAYGROUND! he Miracle League of Northampton Township PA has Tembarked on a new journey which involves making improvements to the already popular playground at the Municipal Park on Hatboro and Bristol Roads. The mission of The Miracle League of Northampton Township PA, a non-profit organization, is to enrich the community by providing education and social development through high quality recreation facilities and programs for individuals with special needs and their families.

In April 2012 the Miracle League and the community celebrated the grand opening of a baseball field and a multi-purpose field, both uniquely designed with special playing surfaces. The Miracle League field has a custom designed rubberized surface that easily accommodates wheelchairs and other assistive devices while helping to prevent injuries. The multi-purpose field is made of artificial turf which is more accessible than a typical turf field. The fields are located in the Municipal Park and are situated adjacent to the softball fields that are used by the Northampton Girls Softball Association. This location creates a feeling of inclusion for the Miracle League athletes, who enjoy participating sports just like every one else.

This all volunteer organization once again is ready to make a miracle happen and create an all- inclusive playground by enhancing the existing playground at the Northampton Township Municipal Park. Planned improvements to make the playground all – inclusive will include the installation of new equipment that will welcome kids and families of all abilities to learn, play and grow together.

The Township applied to the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Community Conservation Partnership Program for a matching grant to assist in the funding of this $500,000+ project. The remainder of the funds needed may be matched through fundraising projects and generous contributors.

If you would like additional information or are interested in making a donation to support the purchase and installation of new equipment so that children can play together without experiencing physical or social barriers visit the website at www.miracleleaguenhpa.org, call 267-679-8831 or mail a check to Miracle League of Northampton Township, PA PO Box 453 Richboro, PA 18954-0453. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!!

A miracle is often considered an extraordinary event in human affairs; a league is an association of persons brought together by a common interest, goal or cause. So, by definition the Miracle League is an association of people brought together to take part in extraordinary events in human affairs. This rationale rings true when speaking of the Miracle League of Northampton Township, PA.

SOLAR SYSTEM WALK agle Scout Candidate Vahan Kazandjian’s interest in space began at the same time as his trail Eto Eagle. To accentuate this service to the community, Vahan decided to create a permanent exhibit on space that could be found rain or shine at the Municipal Park. Vahan designed a Solar System Walk which consists of signs about each planet placed at distances to scale in space from the sun. He crafted signs and used language easily understandable to a novice, yet engaging enough for more experienced viewers. For the tech savvy, QR codes were used which link to additional information. Challenges are included at the bottom of each sign which engages those on the walk to better understand the dynamics of solar system. Next time you are near the Northampton Municipal Park Playground, start on a journey to space and view this project. We’re sure you will agree that his Eagle Scout project is out of this world!

8 WWW.NORTHAMPTONTOWNSHIP.COM HENRY WYNKOOP Northampton’s Elder Statesman By Beverly Schaefer

A contemporary of George Washington, Henry Wynkoop is Northampton Township’s most notable resident.

e was born in 1737 on the 521-acre property purchased by his grandfather, Gerardus HWynkoop, which extended from the Neshaminy Creek to the intersection of Holland and Newtown-Richboro Roads. Henry went on to inherit the farm when his father, Nicholas, died in Portrait of Henry Wynkoop 1759. This derailed his plans to attend (then known as The College of New (1737-1816) Jersey) as he now had property to manage. He married Susanna Wanshaer in 1761 and two by Rembrandt Peale, circa 1810. years later they had their first of seven children, all born within five years time.

Henry, known as Judge Wynkoop, was largely self-taught in the law. He was appointed to a grand jury for the first of six times in 1762. Gaining stature and influence in the local community he then went on to be appointed as a Justice of the Peace and then as a lay associate circuit court judge. He was elected, at the age of 23, as a representative of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly, a position he held for 53 years.

In the run up to the outbreak of the American Revolution, Henry Wynkoop additionally served on the Committee of Safety, the Committee of Observation, and the Committee of Correspondence. The Wynkoop Mansion known as “Vredens Berg” or “Vredens Hof”, circa 1910. It was destroyed by fire in 1911. He became known as an outspoken supporter of the drive for independence. From 1774 to 1776 Wynkoop was a delegate to the Pennsylvania Provincial Congress. He then served as a member of the Second from 1779 to 1783. Tragically, his wife, Susanna, died in August of 1776 from injuries she sustained from either falling or hiding in a well when British soldiers or Hessians came to their property searching for Henry.

In 1780, Wynkoop was also appointed President Judge of the Bucks County Quarter Sessions Court at the same time as he was serving as the Judge for the High Court of Errors and Appeals. He resigned both positions in 1789 to take his seat as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives during the First United States Congress, serving alongside John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and . While he never kept a diary, letters sent to his son- in-law, Dr. Reading Beatty, survive and tell of his excitement at being in attendance at George Washington’s presidential inauguration at Federal Hall in New York City. Wynkoop had dined with Washington several times over the course of the war and both had a keen interest in agriculture.

In 1791, Wynkoop was named the first Associate Judge in Bucks County Henry Wynkoop’s gravestone - Dutch Reformed cemetery court. A few months later Pennsylvania Governor Mifflin named him as (present-day Addisville Cemetery). President Judge in the first Judicial District of Pennsylvania. Wynkoop continued to serve in his position as Associate Judge until his retirement in 1812. After his first wife’s death, Henry Wynkoop went on to marry twice more, Mary Cummings who died in 1781 and then Sarah Newkirk.
