For background on the history of prescriptive grammar, I discuss the grammarian Robert Lowth and his views on the English language in the 18th century in relation to the status of the language today. Some of the rules he described have become obsolete or were even considered more of a stylistic choice during the writing and editing of his book, A Short Introduction to English Grammar, so reviewing and revising prescriptive grammar is something that should be done regularly. The goal of this paper is to discover the status of the variables ―to lay‖ versus ―to lie,‖ ―who‖ versus ―whom,‖ ―X and I‖ versus ―X and me,‖ and ―may‖ versus ―might‖ in contemporary popular media, and thereby discern the validity of the prescriptive rules in everyday language. Every instance of each variable in the three programs was documented and attempted to be determined as correct or incorrect based on various rules. Based on the numbers gathered, the usage of three of the variables still conforms to prescriptive rules for the most part, while the word ―whom‖ has almost entirely yielded to ―who‖ when the objective is called for.

Glee and Flash Mobs 1 Glee, Flash Mobs, and the Creation of Heightened Realities In May of 2009 the television series Glee (Fox, 2009-2015) made its debut on the Fox network, in the coveted post-American Idol (2002-present) timeslot. Glee was already facing an uphill battle due to its musical theatre genre; the few attempts at a musical television series in the medium’s history, Cop Rock (ABC, 1990) and Viva Laughlin (CBS, 2007) among them, had been overall failures. Yet Glee managed to defeat the odds, earning high ratings in its first two seasons and lasting a total of six. Critics early on attributed Glee’s success to the popularity of the Disney Channel’s television movie High School Musical (2006) and its subsequent sequels, concerts and soundtracks. That alone cannot account for the long-term sensation that Glee became, when one acknowledges that High School Musical was a stand-alone movie (sequels notwithstanding).

• "Straight People Are Looking at You:" Heterosexual Privilege and Homonormativity in American Visual Texts
"Straight People Are Looking at You:" Heterosexual Privilege and Homonormativity in American Visual Texts by Nancy Blair A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Auburn Alabama August 3, 2013 Copyright 2013 by Nancy Blair Approved by Marc Silverstein, Chair,Professor of English Jonathan Bolton, Professor of English Susana Morris, Assistant Professor of English George Plasketes, Professor of Communications and Journalism Abstract My dissertation deals with the topic of representations of gay men in such American popular texts as film, television, and mainstream theatre. I advance the argument that while the 2000s have seen a dramatic rise in the number of gay people, primarily white men, depicted in these texts, this growth has had many consequences that actually serve the interests of the heterosexual majority far more than the gay audiences that consume these texts. Gay men in popular film, television and drama are often presented either as saints, who either die or suffer profoundly in order to teach the straight audiences lessons, or as victims that need to be saved from their (often gay) oppressors. Texts that include these portrayals advocate not acceptance of sexual diversity, but tolerance, which reinforces inequality rather than challenging it. While these representations reflect straight creators and audiences' desire to both disavow and cling to the privileges they enjoy at the expense of gay people, they are also the result of gay creators and audience's insistence on "positive representations." I argue that these representations are part of the political stance theorist Lisa Duggan calls the "new homonormativity," which homogenizes gay people by shoring up the mainstream values of monogamous marriage, child-rearing, and consumerism.

DANCING WITH MYSELF: REPRESENTATIONS OF DISABILITY WITHIN GLEE By Lauren Levins A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Mass Communication Middle Tennessee State University 2013 Thesis Committee: Dr. Katie Foss, Chair Dr. Jason Reineke Dr. Clare Bratten ABSTRACT: Media have potential to alter people’s perceptions towards unfamiliar subjects (Davis, 2006). In the case of disability, danger can occur when representations are inaccurate. Previous research on portrayals of disabilities found a lack of representation and negative depictions overall. This study looked at the first three seasons of the television show Glee. Textual analysis was applied using Hall’s Encoding/Decoding, Dyer’s stereotyping, social construction theory, and a developed list of stereotypes. This study attempted to answer how people with disabilities were constructed and the perpetuation or challenging of stereotypes on Glee. Resulting topics involved storylines used to depict disabilities, interactions, and disability and agency. Stereotypes were found, but serious topics were also discussed. Implications involve the importance of accurate portrayals, the possibility to learn about disabilities, and the risks of self-stigmatization and negative treatment of disabilities. Further analysis of Glee seasons and comparisons of Glee’s depictions to other shows were suggested. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction……………………………………………………………………………...1 Defining Disability………………………………………………………………………4 History of Portrayals……………………………………………………………………..4
