CANARY ISLANDS READING History the 8 Islands Tourism CANARY ISLANDS READING History The Canary Islands are situated 100 kilometres off the coast of West Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean. The ancient Greek and Romans called them “The Fortunate Islands” and the philosopher Plato linked the Canary Islands with the lost continent of Atlantis. The Canary Islands played an important part in the discovery of America, when Columbus stopped in La Gomera during his voyage in 1492. The 8 islands There are 8 islands in the archipielago. They are: Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa. The sun shines during the whole year. The weather is warm and the temperature has an average of 19ºC in Winter and 24ºC in Summer. There are 4 important National Parks in the Canary Islands, which means that this is the Autonomous Community that has got more National Parks than any else. Tourism Tourists will find different activities to do and to see in the Canary Islands. There are many nature areas to visit, for example: forests, sand dunes, volcanoes, natural pools… You can visit the Teide Volcano in Tenerife (the highest mountain of Spain), the Maspalomas sand dunes in Gran Canaria, the sand dunes of Corralejo in Fuerteventura, natural pools in El Hierro, the forest of the Garajonay National Park in La Gomera, volcano of Teneguía in La Palma of the Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote. Gastronomy Canary Islands' cuisine combines traditional Spanish recipes with african and latin-american influences. We find here an incredible variety of recipes, with excellent fish, potatoes, cheese, fruits and vegetables. Among its most famous dishes are wrinkled potatoes – papas arrugadas. This traditional dish of Canarian cuisine, is made with “pretty potatoes” – papas bonitas, a variety of small potatoes served with mojo sauce. More important dishes are: escaldón (made with gofio), puchero, almogrote, sancocho, ropa vieja, etc. If you have a sweet tooth, you will enjoy this part of the text. Gran Canaria DELGADO DARIAS, Teresa El Museo Canario Se presentan los resultados del estudio de la Vitrina 2 de la Sala de Antropología del Museo Castillo de la Fortaleza El Hao, en Santa Lucía, procedente de la colección Vicente Sánchez Araña. Según se indica en la etiqueta de referencia el contenido de la vitrina corresponde a una cueva funeraria de los antiguos canarios, barranco de Guayadeque, cuya recuperación se produjo en 1950. Se trataba de un depósito colectivo que el responsable del Museo calificó como sepulcro familiar y situó cronológicamente en el siglo I dC. No obstante, la veracidad de esta información es cuestionable pues no hay certeza de que todos los componentes de la vitrina procedan de la misma cueva, ni siquiera del mismo contexto geográfico. Todo parece indicar que la escena que se recrea no corresponde a la realidad funeraria de ningún sepulcro y solo es una composición con arreglo a los intereses expositivos del responsable del Museo. Es un ejemplo de cómo durante mucho tiempo se ha funcionado en instituciones y espacios dedicados a la exposición del Patrimonio Arqueológico, donde la manipulación y la recreación, cuando no la falsificación de evidencias, constituía una práctica común. En este caso, la visión del artífice muestra una comprensión del fenómeno funerario interesante que permite valorar en el contexto del momento cómo se construye el conocimiento sobre el pasado aborigen insular.

Conducting long-term hazard assessment in active volcanic areas is of primordial importance 14 for land-use planning and to define emergency plans able to be applied in case of a crisis. Definition of 15 scenario hazard maps helps to mitigate the consequences of future eruptions by anticipating to the events 16 that may occur. Lanzarote is an active volcanic island that has hosted the largest (>1.5 km3 DRE) and 17 longest (6 years) eruption, the Timanfaya eruption (1730-36), on the Canary Islands in historical times 18 (last 600 years). This eruption brought severe economic losses and forced local people to migrate. In spite 19 of all these facts, no comprehensive hazard assessment neither hazard maps have been developed for the 20 island. La metodología que se ha empleado se ha aplicado a los espacios naturales que se contemplan dentro del ámbito de los tres marcos jurídicos que establece la Ley 42/2007, de 13 de diciembre, del Patrimonio Natural y de la Biodiversidad. Estos son los siguientes: a) Espacios protegidos por el Estado español o por sus Comunidades Autónomas; b) Espacios protegidos de la Red Natura 2000 y c) Áreas prote- gidas por instrumentos internacionales. Dentro de la primera tipología se analizan: los Parques Naturales, las Reservas Naturales, los Monumentos Naturales y los Paisajes Protegidos.
