This is a darling audio collection of 3 short stories from Dahl, beautifully read by three recognizable and charming British actors. Today the story is published as A Piece of Cake. She tries to talk them out of it, but the Greggs only laugh at her. Popular Features. This makes the main character angry and when she is angry her finger starts to tingle. The purchaser is responsible for meeting these costs. Mellybean and the Giant Monster. My favorite story of the three is definitely The Minpins. Richard Ayoade Reading ,. Rating details. Whole Language Instruction vs. Phonics Instruction: Effect on Reading Fluency and Spelling Accuracy of First Grade Students Krissy Maddox Jay Feng Presentation at Georgia Educational Research Association Annual Conference, October 18, 2013. Savannah, Georgia 1 Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of whole language instruction versus phonics instruction for improving reading fluency and spelling accuracy. The participants were the first grade students in the researcher’s general education classroom of a non-Title I school. Stratified sampling was used to randomly divide twenty-two participants into two instructional groups. One group was instructed using whole language principles, where the children only read words in the context of a story, without any phonics instruction. The other group was instructed using explicit phonics instruction, without a story or any contextual influence. After four weeks of treatment, results indicate that there were no statistical differences between the two literacy approaches in the effect on students’ reading fluency or spelling accuracy; however, there were notable changes in the post test results that are worth further investigation. In reading fluency, both groups improved, but the phonics group made greater gains. In spelling accuracy, the phonics group showed slight growth, while the whole language scores decreased. Overall, the phonics group demonstrated greater growth in both reading fluency and spelling accuracy. It is recommended that a literacy approach should combine phonics and whole language into one curriculum, but place greater emphasis on phonics development. 2 Introduction Literacy is the fundamental cornerstone of a student’s academic success. Without the skill of reading, children will almost certainly have limited academic, economic, social, and even emotional success in school and in later life (Pikulski, 2002). -

Exploring Bicultural Experiences: Responding to a Chinese American Young Adult Novel SHWUYI LEU North Central College, Naperville, Illinois Introduction Culture is the terrain through which the individual speaks as a member of the contemporary national collectivity, but culture is also a mediation of history, the site through which the past returns and is remembered, however fragmented, imperfect, or disavowed. Through that remembering, that re-composition, new forms of subjectivity and community are thought and signified. (Lowe, 1996, p. x) In remembering, creating, and re-imagining their forefathers‟ and their own American experience, Asian Americani children‟s literature writers “reposition themselves as central to the American experience rather than peripheral” and create narratives “as an integral part of the multilayered tapestry of the „American‟ experience‟” (de Manuel & Davis, 2006, p. vii). In reading and responding to Asian American children‟s literature, Asian American readers enter the terrain through which they connect to their ancestral and cultural traditions (Ching & Pataray-Ching, 2006) and “find their place in the picture of the American cultural landscape” (de Manuel & Davis, 2006, p. vii). The act of writing and reading Asian American children‟s literature is a part of what Lowe (as quoted above) indicated, i.e., forming and reforming their subjectivity. The reading of multicultural literature also provides opportunities for the rejection of stereotyped thinking (Farrell, 1990). Most importantly, it creates opportunities for members from parallel cultures to become aware of alternative thoughts, to value their own culture, and to enhance the development of a positive identity (Enciso, 1994; Sims, 1983; Spears-Bunton, 1990). Leung (2003) also contends that cross-cultural readings serve as positive supports for minority students‟ ethnic identity development as well as a pool of diverse culture learning opportunities for mainstream students.
