STUDIA UBB GEOGRAPHIA, LVIII, 1, 2013, pp. 93-100 (RECOMMENDED CITATION) THE TOURISM CAPITALIZATION OF THE HYDROGRAPHIC POTENTIAL IN “MARAMUREȘ LAND” DEPRESSION AREA BY MEANS OF RURAL TOURISM ALINA SIMONA SIMION1 ABSTRACT. – The Tourism Capitalization of the Hydrographic Potential in “Maramureș Land” Depression Area by Means of Rural Tourism. The rural tourism of Maramureș is a complex activity, with multiple facets. It is not exclusively based on the peasant household, but also on holidays in the middle of nature, motivated by different activities that take place due to a rich natural potential. Out of this attractive natural potential, the hydrographic component was chosen to be analyzed, as it is an important resource, which determined the emergence, development and diversification of tourism in Maramureș Land. This study intends to present the tourism value and importance of the hydrographic resources of Maramureș Land, by means of which rural tourism can be diversified in this geographical area. The hydrography is the main factor influencing the modification of the Maramureș geographic space, the development and characteristics of the settlements, the economic activities performed by the local population. It is also the main factor in directing and orienting the transport network. Maramureș Land hydrographic network has a high variety, from fresh water, to salt water, from rivers with high flows to mineral water springs, being used in diverse manners. Keywords: Maramureș Land, hydrographic resources, tourism capitalization, rural tourism, sport tourism. 1. INTRODUCTION Rural areas are the framework for a range of tourism activities, specific for many forms of tourism. FINAL REPORT of the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania Presented to Romanian President Ion Iliescu November 11, 2004 Bucharest, Romania NOTE: The English text of this Report is currently in preparation for publication. © International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania. All rights reserved. -
Wooden Churches – a Representative Component in the Cultural Rural
ROMANIAN REVIEW OF REGIONAL STUDIES, Volume III, Number 2, 2007 WOODEN CHURCHES - A REPRESENTATIVE COMPONENT IN THE CULTURAL RURAL LANDSCAPE OF TRANSYLVANIA NICOLAE CIANG Ă1 ABSTRACT. – This paper analyses one of the most representative components of the rural religious material culture – the wooden churches – typical for the historical province of Transylvania and especially for Maramure ş. Wooden churches are specific for the rural space inhabited by the Romanian communities, with an accented character of conservatism and preservation of the traditions from Maramure ş, the Some ş Plateau and the Apuseni Mountains. The physiognomic architectural characteristics and the technique of the buildings, joining the archaic means with a science of equilibrium and of wood resistance have imposed this category of objectives, offering originality and even uniqueness to the rural landscape to which they belong. Key words: wooden churches, cultural patrimony, villages of Transylvania, wood civilization. Wooden churches join as essential components in the civilization and rural culture belonging to the Romanian space, next to the households with dwellings, annexes, enclosures and gateways, using the same building material – wood. They can be considered as a quintessence of the multi - millenary folk civilization of wood, due to some anonymous creators, who formed in time a genuine school, perpetuated until nowadays, especially in Maramure ş. They succeeded a harmonious union between the ancestral representations and symbols related to the village’s universe, transposed in a marvellous way - by form, dimension, wood modelling (sculpture) and by the adoption of some stylistic components derived from Occident - as belfries and steeples, individualizing an authentic rural ”Gothic” style from Maramure ş. -

The Wooden Churches of Maramures
WHC Nomination Documentation File Name: 904.pdf UNESCO Region: EUROPE AND THE NORTH AMERICA __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: The Wooden Churches of Maramures DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 4th December 1999 STATE PARTY: ROMANIA CRITERIA: C (iii) (v) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 23rd Session of the World Heritage Committee The Committee inscribed the site on the World Heritage List on the basis of criterion (iv): Criterion (iv): The Maramures wooden churches are outstanding examples of vernacular religious wooden architecture resulting from the interchange of Orthodox religious traditions with Gothic influences in a specific vernacular interpretation of timber construction traditions, showing a high level of artistic maturity and craft skills. It was noted that neighbouring States Parties could consider proposing to add other wooden churches to this inscription. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS The Maramures wooden churches represent a selection of eight outstanding examples of different architectural solutions from different periods and areas. They provide a vivid picture of the variety of design and craftsmanship expressed by narrow but high timber constructions with their characteristic tall, slim clock towers at the western end of the building, single or double roofed and covered by shingles. As such, they are a particular vernacular expression of the cultural landscape of that mountainous area of northern Romania 1.b State, Province or Region: Region of Maramures, Districts of Bârsana, Budesti, Desesti, Ieud, Sisesti, Poienile Izei, Târgu-Lapus 1.d Exact location: Church District Village Coordinates The Church of the Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple Bârsana Bârsana 47° 49'15" N, 24° 03'21" E The Church of Saint Nicholas Budesti Budesti 47°43'26" N, 23°58'43" E 1.IDENTIFICATION DU BIEN a. -
