A welcome from the Chair of the Harlesden Neighbourhood Forum Welcome to the Harlesden Neighbourhood Plan - a vision of how Harlesden can develop and grow over the next fifteen years whilst preserving its distinct heritage. Policies within the Neighbourhood Plan are restricted to matters amenable to planning – primarily the built, physical environment. The Plan’s remit does not extend to local services, cultural and arts activities or economic development, although of course planning policies can contribute to the protection and growth of all these things. Harlesden Neighbourhood Forum’s ambitions for our area however go far beyond planning policy. We hope you will continue to engage with the development of the Plan and work of the Forum throughout the formal process and beyond. Beyond the Plan we are keen to develop an exciting and unique offer for visitors and residents alike based on Harlesden’s cultural and artistic diversity. Harlesden is a colourful, neighbourhood in north west London, home to people from across the world, where you can sample a dizzying range of cultures and cuisines from Brazilian to Polish, Trinidadian to Somali. Where, in a single visit, you can pop into some of the best Caribbean food stores in London, admire the beauty and history of Harlesden’s churches or enjoy the outdoors in beautiful Roundwood Park or one of our newly regenerated pocket parks. -

In 1987 Gene A. Norman, then Chairman, directed the Commission's Survey Department to undertake a survey of Queens Community Board 3 which includes Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Corona. This work was undertaken largely by Survey staff member Luella Adams and resulted in a report presented to the Commission, containing recommendations for potential historic districts and individual landmarks within the area of the Community Board. -

Sir Nicholas Winton was born in Hampstead, London in 1909. For nine months in 1939 he rescued 669 children from Czechoslovakia, bringing them to the UK, thereby sparing them from the horrors of the Holocaust. Sir Nicholas died in July 2015, aged 106. ‘Why are you making such a big deal out of it? I just helped a little; I was in the right place at the right time.’ Despite Sir Nicholas’s humble and inspiring statement, it was more than just being in the right place at the right time, as his life story will show. Sir Nicholas Winton was born in Hampstead in 1909 to Jewish parents. In December 1938, at the age of 29, Winton cancelled a planned skiing holiday after being urged by a friend, Martin Blake, to go to Prague to see the dire situation for himself. The area had become overwhelmed with refugees after Germany had annexed the Sudetenland, a mostly German-speaking area of Czechoslovakia. Winton travelled to Czechoslovakia where he was sent by Doreen Warriner to see several refugee camps. Blake and Warriner were both working with an organisation to help relocate the adults, and Winton quickly realised that something had to be done to rescue the children who were caught up in the situation. He simply could not stand by. On Kristallnacht (9 and 10 November 1938), the Nazis had initiated a campaign of hatred against the Jewish population in all Nazi territories. An estimated 91 Jews were killed, 30,000 were arrested, and 267 synagogues were destroyed. Following this, the British government relaxed its immigration laws and agreed to allow in a limited number of children from Germany and Austria. -

At one time or another the entire world at some point has witnessed the brunt of these continual paths ofdestruction and horror. And over time, these conflicts have originated for different reasons: acquiring wealth and additional land mass, hatred or greed against a culture, taking control over the weak, political and religious beliefs, protection of an existing culture or lifestyle, fear, revenge or retaliation, and bad judgment. These wars are never initiated by the innocent ofthe world, especially the children, but are forced upon them in such brutal ways that it is hard to fathom that mankind at times can be so insanely cruel, unjust and incomprehensible to their very existence or plight. -

FALL 2002 29 Laughter and Ethnicity in John Leguizamo's One-Man Worlds Miriam M. Chirico John Leguizamo's life is the substance of his art. His unflinching and uncompromising look at his own life and the lives of those closest to him provides the basis for his one-man shows, Mambo Mouth, Spic-O-Rama, the Tony-nominated play Freak and Sexaholix...A Love Story. Leguizamo has stamped his stand-up comic style as a playwright and his energetic characterizations as an actor onto the Broadway stage and the Hollywood screen. As the first Latino performer ever to produce a one-man show on Broadway, he is a spokesperson for a minority culture that vies to be heard within a dominant Anglo-Saxon one, and his dramatic sketches are tinged with a political undercurrent that questions the status quo of race relations in America. Leguizamo never allows his content to become too cerebral or heavy, but instead manipulates the comic impulse to bring his characters to life, providing the audience a means of empathizing with these characters and understanding the social and political issues at stake. Nor are his characters stereotypical representations of race and gender, as sometimes occurs in comedy. Rather, as each character confides his or her story to the audience, the facade they have brazenly put forth begins to erode under their frank admissions of fears and doubts. His characters are earnest and quirky, and derive their appeal not only from the stories they tell but also from the vocal and physical skills Leguizamo brings to each character.
