Awaiting our Salvation

The time is near! Our hope, our Savior, our future is coming. In a few weeks, we will be celebrating one of the highest solemnities in our church: the birth of a child. The child foretold by the prophets, the child all of Judaism was waiting for. But why?

Why were the tribes of waiting? Their kingdom was broken, the people were sold into slavery and ruled by other nations. They lost their freedom. Their worship and relationship with God were in peril. In short, they were weak. They were broken. They needed saving.

They viewed the pagan nations as the work of evil. The other nations conquered Israel out of punishment for Israel’s sinful disobedience to God. The primary tension in the Bible surrounds the problem of sin and God’s desire to save us from this wicked slavery to sin. From the beginning, man disobeyed God, but God did not uncreate man. No, He instead treated man as a child and punished him. But God never gave up on us. You never cast us aside for something else. He remained faithful.

In his unfailing love for us, He chose to save us again. The God of the universe, the creator of time and space, Himself not a part of creation, chose to become the most fragile of all. The Word of God took on flesh and fully became man. He did all of this for the purpose of saving us from sin. Death was due for it is the punishment for sin. Human death, however, does not have the power to save. Someone with power over death must conquer death. For this reason, God took upon Himself all of our sins so that He can bear our punishment for us.

What are we waiting for? The memorial of our Savior’s selfless act of joining us in this battle is drawing near. Soon will be Christmas, the day God became one of us for the purpose of saving us. As Fr. Betz often says, the only thing we can offer Him is our sins. We must present these to God. We are weak. We are broken down by sin. We must recognize our need for a Savior, that we cannot save ourselves. During this time of preparation for Christmas, we confront our sins and surrender them over to God. Come, Lord Jesus, and save us!
