    DE YONVILLE-L’ABBAYE À RY : une bataille topographique Gilles CLÉROUX Bibliothécaire à la bibliothèque des Lettres, université de Rouen Normandie Vice-président des Amis de Flaubert et de Maupassant En 1951, les éditions de l’Illustration publient le premier volume d’une série de quatre ouvrages grand format intitulée Demeures inspirées et sites romanesques. Il s’agit en fait d’un regroupement thématique d’articles parus dans la revue du même nom au cours des années précédentes. Ainsi, dans ce premier volume, se trouve une étude de Paul-Émile Cadilhac consacrée à Gustave Flaubert, avec une première partie sur Croisset (pour la demeure inspirée) et une deuxième partie sur le village de Ry (pour le site romanesque). Ce texte, très bien écrit, illustré de nombreuses photographies, est la reprise exacte d’un article paru dans la revue en 1930. C’est l’introduction générale de l’ouvrage, signée également de Cadilhac, qui fournira le point de départ de cette étude : On lit dans la Correspondance de Flaubert, à la date du 24 avril 1852, à propos du Graziella de Lamartine : « Pas un nuage impur ne vient obscurcir ce lac bleuâtre ! Ô hypocrite ! S’il avait raconté l’histoire vraie, que c’eût été plus beau ! »1 Remarquez la date de cette lettre, elle est significative : Flaubert vient d’entamer la rédaction de Madame Bovary (il s’apprête à attaquer l’épisode du bal).     1 Ry et Madame Bovary Le jeudi 28 août 2003. "Pourquoi n’écrirais-tu pas l’histoire de Delamare ?" C’est, tel que le rapporte Maxime Du Camp dans ses Mémoires, la question que l’ami Bouilhet pose un jour à Flaubert, et qui amène celui-ci à composer Madame Bovary entre 1851 et 1856, transposant dans son récit des faits vieux d’à peine une dizaine d’année. Aujourd’hui, Ry et ses environs proposent un véritable parcours (de 60 km !) sur les traces de Delphine et Eugène Delamare, devenus sous la plume de Flaubert Emma et Charles Bovary. La petite ville s’identifie ainsi à Yonville-l’Abbaye. Les similitudes entre la fiction et la réalité sont en effet trop troublantes, bien que Flaubert - soucieux de n’écrire que des "choses vues", mais aussi de préserver une part de mystère ou d’universalité à son récit - n’ait jamais confirmé que Ry était bien le décor de son œuvre. Dans la réalité, Delphine, déçue par son mari, ses amants et la vie, s’empoisonne et meurt le 6 mars 1848. Eugène ne lui survit que jusqu’au 17 septembre 1849. À voir à Ry (Madame Bovary en main !) De la Galerie Bovary à l’église, on peut la remonter en longeant les différents souvenirs qui, dans la vie d’Emma comme dans celle de Delphine, conduisent de son installation à Ry à sa mort. la première étape est le syndicat d’initiative, qui vous délivrera une carte du 2 village des Delamare-Bovary, Les deux maisons des Delamare : la première, disparue, se trouvait à l’angle de la Grande Rue et de la route de Blainville (à droite sur notre photo) ; la seconde se trouvait Grande rue, presque en face du Crédit Agricole, et est devenue une belle pharmacie, l’étude du maître Guillaumin du roman était en réalité l’étude de maître Leclerc, aujourd’hui le magasin Rêve Ry, Grande Rue, l’ex-hôtel de Rouen (devenu Le Lion d’Or dans le roman… et Crédit Agricole dans la réalité), où s’arrête L’Hirondelle, la diligence qui transporte Emma de Rouen à Ry, la pharmacie Homais du roman était la pharmacie Jouanne, pharmacien que connaissait Flaubert.
