Further reproduction prohibited without permission. Abstract No one has previously undertaken a detailed examination of Kate Chopin’s documented intertextuality with writers such as W.D. Howells, Hamlin Garland, Maupassant, and Flaubert. My purpose is to examine Chopin’s works in the context of writers with whom she interacts and so to reveal her impact on the development of literary realism and naturalism. My study reveals that, though her mature writing eliminates sentimentalism, she never abandons romance elements residual from her youth. Her typically subjective narrator removes narrative authority, intensifies our involvement with characters, and validates the marginalized voice. Darwin and the philosophers temper her Catholicism, yet she maintains a sense of the divine and perennial nature of the force of love. Her acknowledgement of the influence of other writers reveals her sense of continuity as a means of understanding our selves. In Chopin’s first novel, At Fault, she borrows a subplot of Howells’s A Modem Instance to respond to the idealism Howells inveighs against even as his novel upholds it. From Howells’s perspective, love as the basis for action is illusory and ideal. Chopin, understanding love as inherently human rather than as an ideal or abstract concept, critiques Howells’s notion that, lacking love, the ideal of marriage should be upheld. Appreciating Maupassant’s freedom of expression, Chopin departed from American models and responded instead to his stories. Richard Fusco reveals in detail how Chopin emulated Maupassant’s structures. Within those structures, she more V Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. We can use Fusco’s schema to examine Chopin’s conscious dialogic engagement as she focuses not on Maupassant’s larger concerns with an uncaring bourgeoisie, but on narrower concerns, typically within the female consciousness. Chopin finally returns to the novel form with The Awakening, a reconsideration of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. Emma Bovary experiences no awakening, retaining romantic misconceptions. Edna awakens to the need to escape temporal limitations. Chopin pleads for the romantic vision and the necessity of understanding one’s inner reality. Under the influence of these writers, Chopin demonstrates continuity, forms a link between French and American realism and naturalism, and contributes to the movement toward “soft” naturalism. vi Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. (Dec. 1898,Miscellany 37) In becoming a mature artist, Kate Chopin was influenced by literary masters on both sides of the Atlantic. During her brief writing career (1889 to 1899), she responded deliberately to American writers Howells and Garland and French writers Maupassant and Flaubert. Unfortunately, The Awakening (1899), probably inspired by Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (1856), sparked controversy that ended her career and placed her in virtual obscurity until she was rediscovered by Daniel Rankin (1932), by Cyrille Amavon in France (1953), researched later by Larzer Ziff (1966), and boosted to canonical status by Per Seyersted (1969). Indeed, the idea of nothing pertains to existential crisis and nihilism: the former is defined as a state of panic or feeling of intense psychological discomfort about questions of existence (Existential-Crisis) and the latter is defined as a viewpoint that traditional values and beliefs are unfounded and that existence is senseless and useless (Nihilism). Shakespeare’s Hamlet explores the psychological processes which Hamlet experiences throughout the play alongside the concept of nothing. In referring to the presence of nothing as “powerful” in her essay, Cook identifies that the existence of nothing asks the audience to imagine and contemplate what their motive and point of life are. The audience is allowed to acknowledge the artistic intention through witnessing the development of Hamlet’s mental state. The tragedy of Hamlet displays Hamlet’s psychological state, which entails Hamlet’s languishment along with existential crisis and nihilism.

The four key Deleuzian “folds” of the process explore “awakening” to become lead professionals for democratic ways of living, cultivating repertoires for a diversified, holistic pedagogy, engaging in critical self- examinations and critically appraising their professional artistry. In “reactivating” the lived experiences, scholarship, writing and vocational calling of a brilliant Greek and Latin scholar named Marya Barlowski, meanings will be constructed as engendered through biographical narrative and currere case study. Grounded in the curriculum leadership “map,” she represents an allegorical presence in the narrative. Allegory has always been connected to awakening, and awakening is a precursor for capacity-building. The research design (the precise way in which to study this ‘problem’) will be a combination of historical narrative and currere. This collecting and constructing of Her story speaks to how the vision of leadership isn’t completely new – threads of it are tied to the past.

I recommend (and this is advice I have to take myself!) branching out from one’s favorite genre for variety and to discover additional types of writing to enjoy. Other than recommendations from people you know who have studied or read the works, an easy option for choosing a book is to look up an excerpt of the novel/drama. That way, you know the level of difficulty as well as the author’s style and language. Almost all good literature contains less-than-savory elements -- language, sinful behavior, sometimes even an overt or subtle skewed world view. With that disclaimer comes the fact that most, if not all good literature that I have read doesn’t glorify sin but punishes it in some way. Christian family review sites also exist, including the following: Redeemed Reader, Focus on the Family, Plugged In, and Common Sense Media.     Chopin, Kate, 1851-1904 from Literature Online biography Kate Chopin (1850-1904) was an American writer who came to prominence at the fin de siècle with her short stories, many about Louisiana life. She was admired in her lifetime chiefly for her 'charming' depictions of 'local colour', and the work now regarded as her great achievement, the novel The Awakening (1899), was accorded a decidedly mixed reception. Since the late 1960s this novel has come to be regarded as a classic of American literature and is a staple of literature and women's studies university courses, though it is not yet very familiar to general readers. Bearing in mind The Awakening , the story of a woman's sense of oppression in conventional marriage and her burning desire (not uncomplicatedly fulfilled) for liberty, modern critics tend to value most highly those of Chopin's short stories that, in her lifetime, were regarded as distasteful and even unrespectable, dealing with sexuality and the less than fairytale aspects of relationships between the sexes. Chopin was not a campaigning author, for all that she foregrounded socially uncomfortable issues in a way that was considered 'advanced': though some of her characters chafe at conventional expectations, she carefully presented herself as a mother and homemaker, writing only in the interstices of domestic responsibilities; and her treatment of class and race is not always as enlightened as her modern critics would like. Sue Asbee has commented that 'there is a sense in which it is disappointing that such a forward- thinking woman campaigned for nobody's rights'.

Santelli II Finn says that my arguments fail to erect a position that is both Catholic and libertarian. I disagree and will expound on them here further, showing how jus- tice for all is possible within such an order. In addition, I will show that Finn’s belief in the redistribution of income is contrary to Catholic social thought. It is he who fails to erect a position that is both Catholic and liberal. Finn is misguided in focusing on a “one-time grand redistribution of wealth after which no further redistributions would be allowed” (a proposal I describe briefly in a footnote) as being an essential part of my position. The core of my thesis is the Christian methodology of doing political economy that I explained. This methodology says that any law, tax, right, rule, regulation, or cultural imperative that provides an incentive to act contrary to the nature of God or a disincentive to act in accord with the nature of God is, by its nature, contrary to God’s Order (capital O) and, as such, can be judged to be wrong and, hence, should be changed or abolished. God is all Good, Beauty, Truth, and One. Therefore any tax on or regulation of goodness, beauty, truth, or unity inhibits or provides a disincentive against humans acting like God and so cannot be a part of a just social order. I take the position that this is the only valid methodology by which a Christian can do political economy, that is, by which a Christian can seek to develop a just social order.

    Donald Winch An Angliciste View of English Civil Society1 Since I shall be painting rapidly with a very broad brush, let me try to express the nature of my conclusion at once, bland though it will seem without more detailed painting. If, God forbid, I were writing an application for a research grant I would couch it in a language that has once more become fashionable. I would claim that I was investigating those features of ‘civil society’ which some acute foreign observers felt had helped to stabilize, even to legitimize the social and political tensions associated with Britain’s emergence as the world’s leading industrial, imperial, and financial power. Alternatively, I could employ another language by speaking ofmentalités, where use of French is not so much fashionable as a mark of the plain fact that this approach goes back at least as far as Montesquieu’s Spirit of the Laws, elements of which can be found in the work of all those I shall be mentioning, from Guizot and Tocqueville on to Hippolyte Taine and Halévy. What was it about the English mentality or character, and the institutions that nourished it, that could account for British political stability and economic success, let alone their more unpleasant habits? Fortunately, I do not have to say much aboutmentalitéshere because Roberto Romani has just completed a book dealing with the question of national character at large.2 If my knowledge of the historiography of economic history had been better than it is, I might have chosen to focus on a younger friend of Halévy, another normalien, Paul Mantoux, whose book on The Industrial Revolution first appeared in 1906.
