Synopsis: Swetlana Geier gilt als die bedeutendste Übersetzerin russischer Literatur ins Deutsche. Ihre Neuübersetzungen von Dostojewskijs fünf grossen Romanen, genannt die «fünf Elefanten», sind ihr Lebenswerk und literarische Meilensteine. Mit 85 Jahren reist Swetlana Geier zum ersten Mal seit dem Krieg zurück an die Orte ihrer Kindheit in der Ukraine. Der Regisseur Vadim Jendreyko begleitete sie auf dieser Reise. Der Film verwebt Swetlana Geiers Lebensgeschichte mit ihrem literarischen Schaffen und spürt dem Geheimnis dieser unermüdlichen Mittlerin zwischen den Sprachen nach.

Synopsis «Complices» (production: Saga Production, distributor: Vega Distribution AG): Vincent and Rebecca have been in love with each other ever since they exchanged glances in an Internet café. They are just barely 18 years old and live a carefree life. But two months later Vincent’s body is found in the Rhone brutally beaten, and Rebecca disappears soon after. The investigation of the case is taken up by the 48-year-old policeman from Villeurbanne, Hervé Cagan. He and his col- league, Karine Mangin, try to retrace the chaotic trail of both youngsters as quickly as possible. After bringing to light the young man’s last hours, he is finally able to solve the case. What he finds shocks him to the core, and he stands before a fundamental decision that could completely change his view on life.

Marie Leuenberger as Rahel Hubli in «Die Standesbeamtin» by Micha Lewinsky

Biography: Marie Leuenberger was born in Berlin in 1980. Her first experience of acting was at the Youth Theatre in Basel. When she had completed secondary school she studied at the Otto- Falckenberg School of Drama in Munich. After graduating in 2002 she was employed at various theatres including the Residence Theatre in Munich, Basel Theatre and Stuttgart State Theatre. In summer 2005 she was awarded the Armin Ziegler Foundation’s Youth Prize. Since 2005 she has been acting at the Hamburg Playhouse. In 2007 she received the Friends of German Theatre Youth Prize. She received the prize for best actress at both the 2009 Festival des Films du Monde in Montreal and the Festival Cinema Tous Écrans in Geneva for her cinema debut in «Die Standesbeamtin».

Biography: Born in 1964 in Spain. Studied drama in Saragossa. Founding member of the theatre company Tabanque, under the direction of Antonio Malondo. 1987 educational work in the Basque country with Teatro Poraiso. 1989 Buil moves to Switzerland to receive further professional training at Dimitri’s Theatre School. Together with Gabriel Alvarez he founds CITA (Centre international du travail de l’acteur) and in 1998 together with Paola Pagani the theatre company Teatro due Punti. Their plays are staged successfully in Switzerland, France and Italy. Buil’s independent work for theatres and film led him into the whole word.

Biography: Norbert Möslang was born in 1952 and lives and works in St. Gallen. He had piano les- sons but is a self-taught soprano saxophone and double bass clarinet player. From 1972 to 2002 he worked together with Andy Guhl. In 1984 he decided that from then on he would only use cracked everyday electronics. He released a range of LPs and CDs under the names Möslang/Guhl, voice crack, poire_z, king übü örchestrü. Synopsis «The Sound of Insects» (production: Liechti Filmproduction, distributor: Look Now!): Liechti's film tells the incredible story of how the mummified corpse of a 40-year-old man was discov- ered by a hunter in one of the most remote parts of the country. The dead man's detailed notes reveal that he actually committed suicide through self-imposed starvation only the summer before. Stéphane Kuthy for the cinematography in «Tannöd» by Bettina Oberli

Biography: Stéphane Kuthy studied at the ECAL/DAVI film school in Lausanne. Initially, he worked as a camera assistant, still photographer and light technician for various short films and advertising films, as well as a number of fictions directed by Phillip Gröning, Angeliki Antoniou, Marcel Gisler, Franz Rickenbach, Lisa Fässler and many others. He has contributed to countless projects as a cinematog- rapher, including Christoph Schaub’s «Jeune Homme», «Happy New Year» and «Herzog & De Meu- ron in China», Bettina Oberli’s «Die Herbstzeitlosen», «Im Nordwind» and «Tannöd», Judith Kennel’s «Steinschlag» and Vadim Jendreykos «Bashkim» as well as «The Woman with the 5 Elephants».

Honorary Award for Claude Goretta

This year’s lifetime achievement award honours Geneva-born Claude Goretta, who has played a piv- otal role in the Swiss film industry. Goretta first became interested in the medium of film as a student, forming the «Ciné-club universitaire». A stint at the British Film Institute in London in the mid-1950s left a lasting impression on him. While in London, he became acquainted with British documentary films and the Free Cinema movement. His short film «Nice Time», produced together with Alain Tanner in 1957, won a prize at the Venice Film Festival. On returning to Switzerland, he began his career at Télévision Suisse Romande, producing documentary films and reportages as well as literary and theatre adaptations. Goretta formed «Groupe 5» in 1968 with Alain Tanner, Michel Soutter, Jean-Louis Roy and Jean-Jacques Lagrange. The group was to have a considerable influence on independent film-making in French-speaking Switzerland. In 1970, Goretta began to direct films for the cinema, which gained recognition both in Switzerland and abroad. Many of his film projects were co- productions with France, where he was also very popular. Goretta’s films concentrate first and fore- most on the everyday lives of normal people, portrayed in a sensitive and respectful way. His international successes include «The Invitation» (1973) and «The Lacemaker» (1977), both of which won prizes in Cannes, as well as the Ramuz adaptation «If the Sun Never Returns» (1987). His most re- cent works «La fuite de Monsieur Monde» (The Disappearance of Monsieur Monde, 2004) and the two-part film for television «Sartre, l’âge des passions» (Sartre, the Age of Passion, 2006) were very well received on television in both France and French-speaking Switzerland.
