The region has endured the worst smog season since the end of the huge El Nino of 1998. Severe air pollution extended throughout the western portion of the state. After years of improving conditions, this setback has caused state offi- cials to end agriculture’s exemption from federal clean air standards. The hot, dry summer weather has damaged U.S. crops. Soybeans have been particularly affected, as heat and drought hit the Midwest during August when the plants are setting pods and need regular rainfall. Crop yield plummeted 8 percent nationwide, to the smallest harvest in seven years. Corn suffered as well, but the Eastern Corn Belt enjoyed good weather, offsetting the smaller yields in the Midwest. Total corn production dropped only 1 percent in yield, and nationwide this will be the second largest harvest on record. Similarly, spring wheat yields in Canada declined due to hot, dry summer conditions. Heat and drought have not been restricted just to North America. Europe, Russia and the Ukraine have reported reduced yields.
