Competing Car Regulations (The “Johnson Formula") Formula Ethos: • To revisit a golden age of motorsport to celebrate : • The diversity of car design of Grand Prix Cars of 1970 -80 • Legendary racing drivers. • To keep the formula: • Low “tech” but allowing some limited forms of modification. • Cheap to compete in. • Fun to race. • Equal, Honourable and equitable for young/old & inexperienced and experienced alike. • Relatively low powered and somewhere near the actual scale speed of the 1:1 Grand Prix cars of 1970 – 1980’s. • A framework for the scale modeller to show their skills by allowing scratch built cars and freedom to dress the cars in any livery. 1, Eligibility: 1.1. Based upon 1:1 vehicles which were eligible for - or competed in - Formula One races between 1970 & 1980 only. 1.2. 1/32 scale model slot cars only. 1.3. Open wheeled Grand Prix/Formula 1 slot cars of any manufacture. 1.4. Competing cars must comply with the regulations set out below. 2, Motor type 2.1. Unmodified/standard Johnson Motors 111 only. 2.2. Resistors may be removed. 2.3. Motors may be stripped down, cleaned and have replacement contacts fitted as part of a competitors motor maintenance regimen. 2.4. Any other form of performance enhancement is not permitted. 2.5. Motor performance will be assessed at the race scruteneering by means of a simple wheel speed check, which the competing driver will be able to witness in an open environment of mutual trust with the scruteneer. -

Race Car Aerodynamics Gregor Seljak April 8, 2008 1 Introduction First racing cars were primarily designed to achieve high top speeds and the main goal was to minimize the air drag. But at high speeds, cars developed lift forces, which affected their stability. In order to improve their stability and handling, engineers mounted inverted wings profiles1 generating negative lift. First such cars were Opel’s rocket powered RAK1 and RAK2 in 1928. However, in Formula, wings were not used for another 30 years. Racing in this era 1930’s to 1960’s occured on tracks where the maximum speed could be attained over significant distance, so development aimed on reducing drag and potencial of downforce had not been discovered until the late 1960’s. But since then, Formula 1 has led the way in innovative methods of generating downforce within ever more restrictive regulations. In order to describe an airfoil, we must define the following terms(Figure 2) • The mean camber line is a line drawn midway between the upper and lower surfaces. • The leading and trailing edge are the most forward an rearward of the mean camber line. 1Compared to an aircraft 1 • The chord line is a line connecing leading an trailing edge. • The chord length is the distance from the leading to the trailing edge, measured along the chord line. • The camber is the maximum distance between mean camber line and chord line. -

PRESS RELEASE // JANUARY 2018 THE ABARTH SAGA, A TASTE OF THE SWISS COLLECTION OF ENGELBERT MÖLL AT THE RETROMOBILE SHOW Reborn 10 years ago, the Italian racing car market with the scorpion outstripped all the major names during the post-war boom. This amazing adventure will be recounted during the Retromobile show through 22 models taken from Engelbert Möll’s magnificent Swiss collection CARLO ABARTH, A CHARACTER ! When it comes to wizards with mechanics, France had Amédée Gordini. Italy had Carlo Abarth. On 15 November 1908, Dora Taussig, heir to a textiles company, gave birth to a baby boy with a strong character: Karl Abarth, mostly know under the name of Carl. As a teenager, he showed a strong interest in mechanics, particularly everything to do with motorcycles. Initially, he worked for Castagna & C in Vienna, but then his career The Engelbert Möll’s collection path changed when he joined the Motor Thun workshop (run by Copyrights : Rémi DARGEGEN Count Thun). When one of its drivers defected, he found himself competing in Austria’s motorcycle grand prix. He raced the fastest time in the free trials and the qualifying heats: Karl had entered the big boys’ playground. The die has been cast and it was the beginning of a series of victory. His reputation extended well beyond Austria: he managed to win a wager that he could beat the Orient Express on the Vienna-to-Ostend stretch. In 1938, he was asked to race for Italy – the birthplace of his own father who had come back to live in Merano, in the Trentino. -

Cette aventure haute en couleur sera explorée, le temps du Salon Rétromobile, avec vingt-deux modèles extraits de la magnifique collection suisse d’Engelbert Möll. CARLO ABARTH, UN PERSONNAGE ! Au royaume des sorciers de la mécanique, la France avait Amédée Gordini. L’Italie ? Carlo Abarth ! Le 15 novembre 1908, Dora Taussig, héritière d’une famille d’industriels du textile, met au monde un garçon au caractère bien trempé : Karl Abarth, plus connu sous le prénom de Carl. Dès l’adolescence, le jeune homme manifeste une forte attirance pour la mécanique et plus particulièrement les motocyclettes.
