Lastly, the teacher should take great supplementary reading or as a first history text-book for care that the proper names are correctly pronounced. The young pupils. A knowledge of ancient history, however superficial, is of very great value; and the classic legends are almost equally worth knowing, because of the prominent part they play in the world's literature. These tales make a deep impression on the minds of children, and the history thus learned almost in play will cling to the memory far more tenaciously than any lessons subsequently conned. Many children leave school unacquainted with any history except that of the United States; which, dealing with less simple and primitive times than that of Greece, is apt to be so unattractive that the child never afterwards reads any historical works. It has been my intention to write a book which will give children pleasure to read, and will thus counteract the impression that history is uninteresting. A few suggestions to teachers may not be considered superfluous. In the first place, I have found historical anecdotes an excellent aid in teaching English. Pupils find it far from irksome to relate the stories in their own words, and to reproduce them in compositions. Secondly, whenever a city or country is mentioned, every pupil should point out its location on the map. Today, athletics likewise holds an important role in our society. Similarities can be seen in the preparation of ancient and modern athletes as well as the attitudes and motivations surrounding athletics. These similarities illustrate that athletics serves an underlying function in ancient Greece as it does today: to both provide a stage to show self-excellence and a release to dispel pent up human emotions. 2 Introduction “One More Rep!     Ancient History Sourcebook: 11th Brittanica: Sparta SPARTA AN ancient city in Greece, the capital of Laconia and the most powerful state of the Peloponnese. The city lay at the northern end of the central Laconian plain, on the right bank of the river Eurotas, a little south of the point where it is joined by its largest tributary, the Oenus (mount Kelefina). The site is admirably fitted by nature to guard the only routes by which an army can penetrate Laconia from the land side, the Oenus and Eurotas valleys leading from Arcadia, its northern neighbour, and the Langada Pass over Mt Taygetus connecting Laconia and Messenia. At the same time its distance from the sea-Sparta is 27 m. from its seaport, Gythium, made it invulnerable to a maritime attack. I.-HISTORY Prehistoric Period.-Tradition relates that Sparta was founded by Lacedaemon, son of Zeus and Taygete, who called the city after the name of his wife, the daughter of Eurotas. But Amyclae and Therapne (Therapnae) seem to have been in early times of greater importance than Sparta, the former a Minyan foundation a few miles to the south of Sparta, the latter probably the Achaean capital of Laconia and the seat of Menelaus, Agamemnon's younger brother. Eighty years after the Trojan War, according to the traditional chronology, the Dorian migration took place. A band of Dorians united with a body of Aetolians to cross the Corinthian Gulf and invade the Peloponnese from the northwest. The Aetolians settled in Elis, the Dorians pushed up to the headwaters of the Alpheus, where they divided into two forces, one of which under Cresphontes invaded and later subdued Messenia, while the other, led by Aristodemus or, according to another version, by his twin sons Eurysthenes and Procles, made its way down the Eurotas were new settlements were formed and gained Sparta, which became the Dorian capital of Laconia.

A. M. Eckstein N THE SUMMER of 19 5 a. c. T. Quinctius Flamininus and the Greek I allies of Rome went to war against N abis of Sparta. The official cause of the war was Nabis' continued occupation of Argos, the great city of the northeastern Peloponnese. 1 A strong case can be made that the liberation of Argos was indeed the crucial and sincere goal of the war,2 although the reasons for demanding Nabis' with­ drawal from Argos may have been somewhat more complex.3 Nabis was soon blockaded in Sparta itself and decided to open negotiations for peace. Livy 34.3lfprovides us with a detailed account of the sub­ sequent encounter between N abis and Flamininus in the form of a debate over the justice of the war, characterized by contradictory assertions about the history of Sparta's relations with Rome and the recent history of Argos. Despite the acrimony, a preliminary peace agreement was reached but was soon overturned by popular resis­ tance to it in Sparta. So the war continued, with an eventual Roman 1 Cf. esp. Montgomery In the Roman d’Alexandre , Alexandre de Paris generates new myth by depicting Alexander the Great as willfully seeking to inscribe himself and his deeds within the extant mythical tradition, and as deliberately rivaling the divine authority. The contemporary literary tradition based on Quintus Curtius’s Gesta Alexandri Magni of which Alexandre de Paris may have been aware eliminates many of the marvelous episodes of the king’s life but focuses instead on Alexander’s conquests and drive to compete with the gods’ accomplishments. The depiction of his premature death within this work and the Roman raises the question of whether or not an individual can actively seek deification. Heroic figures are at the origin of divinity and myth, and the Roman d’Alexandre portrays Alexander as an essentially very human character who is nevertheless dispossessed of the powerful attributes normally associated with heroic protagonists.

    Wine: California State University, Long Beach The Mediterranean -- the sea between the two lands -- links three continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. Here Eastern and Western civilizations developed, mingled, and fused -- sometimes in peace, more often through war and social conflict. In no other global area are medical, nutritional, and dietary accounts of wine, its production and use, more rich and varied. It is here, too, that European medicine developed from mythology into practice. The mythological origins of Greek medical-nutritional practices stem from Aesklepios, his physician-sons, Ma-cha-on and Po-dal-i-rus, and his daughter Hygeia. According to Greek mythology, Aesklepios, son of Apollo, sailed on Jason's ship, Argo, during the heroic quest for the golden fleece; According to Homer, Machaon and Po-dal-i-rus fought at Troy. The first Greek physician to emerge from the mythological cloak of Aesklepios, however, was Hippocrates (BCE 460-377). Hippocrates, considered the father of European medicine, was the first known Mediterranean physician to integrate the physiological constructs of elements, humors, and temperature- moisture attributes into a comprehensive healing system. The corpus of medical writings attributed to Hippocrates is vast, and scholars debate and sort "genuine" Hippocratic texts from fraudulent "later" works. General consensus holds that some medical books can be attributed to Hippocrates, himself, while others were written by later Greek physicians also named Hippocrates, while still others were written by "unnamed" eastern Mediterranean physicians. There has remained the suggestion, too that some works claimed to be written by Hippocrates were in fact authored or strongly influenced by the lesser known Greek physician, Ctesias, who had traveled to Persia and India, whereas there is no evidence that Hippocrates traveled beyond the limits of Asia Minor.
