Jewish Communities in the Political and Legal Systems of Post-Yugoslav Countries
TRAMES, 2017, 21(71/66), 3, 251–271 JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL SYSTEMS OF POST-YUGOSLAV COUNTRIES Boris Vukićević University of Montenegro Abstract. After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the Jewish community within Yugoslavia was also split up, and now various Jewish communities exist in the seven post-Yugoslav countries. Although all of these communities are relatively small, their size, influence, and activity vary. The political and legal status of Jewish communities, normatively speaking, differs across the former Yugoslav republics. Sometimes Jews or Jewish communities are mentioned in constitutions, signed agreements with governments, or are recognized in laws that regulate religious communities. Despite normative differences, they share most of the same problems – a slow process of return of property, diminishing numbers due to emigra- tion and assimilation, and, although on a much lower scale than in many other countries, creeping anti-Semitism. They also share the same opportunities – a push for more minority rights as part of ‘Europeanization’ and the perception of Jewish communities as a link to influential investors and politicians from the Jewish diaspora and Israel. Introduction In 1948, the first postwar census in Yugoslavia counted 6,538 people of Jewish nationality, although many Jews identified as other nationalities (e.g. Croat, Serb) in the census while identifying religiously as Jewish, as seen by the fact that Jewish municipalities (or communities) across Yugoslavia had 11,934 members (Boeckh 2006:427). The number of Jews in Yugoslavia decreased in the following years after the foundation of the State of Israel. -

Původně sefardská komunita, pocházející z Pyrenejského poloostrova, od 16. století spoluutvářela charakter i vzhled města, zatímco neklidné dějiny Balkánu naopak různým způsobem ovlivňovaly dění v tamní židovské komunitě. Předmětem této práce je představit historii židovského obyvatelstva na pozadí významných historických změn a událostí, zejména pak se zaměřením na organizaci La Benevolencija, která vznikla jako jeden ze židovských spolků koncem 19. století a během své téměř nepřetržité existence změnila podle potřeb situace několikrát charakter svého působení. Během občanské války v 90. letech 20. století se La Benevolencija svou humanitární činností významným způsobem podílela na pomoci obyvatelům Sarajeva. Dnes La Benevolencija existuje jako zastřešující kulturně osvětová organizace současné malé sarajevské židovské komunity. Kossiakoff: The Art of War: TheCOMMENT Protection of Cultural Property during the "S THE ART OF WAR: THE PROTECTION OF CULTURAL PROPERTY DURING THE "SIEGE" OF SARAJEVO (1992-95) I. INTRODUCTION Throughout the night of August 25, 1992, shells from Serb gunners fell on the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. The attack set off a blaze fueled by a collection representing hundreds of years of Bosnian history and culture. Librarians and community members, risking sniper fire, formed a human chain to move books to safety.' Despite emergency efforts, ninety percent of the collection was ash by daybreak.2 Unfortunately, this incident was not unique. The destruction of cultural artifacts during the "Siege" of Sarajevo was a loss not only to Bosnia,3 but also to the heritage of the world which now suffers a gap that cannot be closed. -

Old French declension in a “Word and Paradigm” approach and default syncretism Alain Kihm (CNRS – Université Paris-Diderot) [email protected] Old French (OF) nominal lexemes (nouns and adjectives) inflect for two values of the Number feature, singular and plural, and two values of the Case feature, Nominative (traditionally cas sujet) and Oblique (traditionally cas régime). Nominative is for subjects, whatever agrees with the subject, and vocatives; Oblique is for all the rest (DO, IO, genitives, adjuncts) (Horning 1882 ; Raynaud de Lage 1964 ; Nyrop 1965 ; Rheinfelder 1967 ; Moignet 1973 ; La Chaussée 1977 ; Picoche 1979 ; Buridan 2000). I will use the traditional term “declension” for such a double Number-Case inflection. Modern French (MF), in which nominals inflect for Number only – if at all ! – has no declension according to that definition. In “classical” OF (end of the 10th century – beginning of the 14th century) all nominals decline, to the massive exception of feminines ending in -e (probably sounded as [ə]) which only inflect for Number: cf. la porte /la_ˈpɔrtə/ vs. les portes /les_ˈpɔrtəs/ ‘the door(s)’, all functions; and various sorts of indeclinable nominals (e.g. masculines whose stem ends in -s). With declinable nominals, the combinatorics of two numbers and two cases yields four-cells paradigms, illustrated below with a masculine lexeme, MUR ‘wall’ and a feminine one, FLOR ‘flower’: SG PL NOM li murs li mur OBL le mur les murs Table 1 : Paradigm of OF MUR (masculine) SG PL NOM la flors les flors OBL la flor les flors Table 2 : Paradigm of OF FLOR (feminine) As is usual in OF grammars, nominal paradigms include the definite article, showing three distinct forms in the masculine, but only two in the feminine. -

The Beruriah Incident: Tradition of Exclusion as a Presence of Ethical Principles by Itamar Drori * Zusammenfassung Die Geschichte, die als Beruria-Geschehnis bekannt ist und sich in Rashi’s Kommentar zu bAvodah Zarah 18b (dem ATU Typus 920A* und 823A* ähnlich) findet, beschreibt das Scheitern und tragische Ende von R. Meir und seiner Ehefrau Beruria – beide gelten als tannaitische Identifikationsfiguren. In diesem Artikel wird die Authentizität dieser Geschichte untersucht. Dabei wird die Spur ihrer Verbreitung innerhalb der traditionellen jüdischen Gesellschaft vor der Moderne verfolgt. Weiterhin werden ein- zelne Bestandteile der Geschichte mit rabbinischer und internationaler volkstümlicher Literatur verglichen. Abstract The story known as the Beruriah Incident, which appears in Rashi’s commentary on bAvodah Zarah 18b (related to ATU types 920A* and 823A*), describes the failure and tragic end of R. Meir and his wife Beruriah, two tannaic role-models. The Golem Psalms Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service) Performed May 7, 2006 It is something of a surprise to realize that the world had to wait until 1933 for the first large-scale setting of the Jewish worship service by a mainstream composer, Ernest Bloch’s magnificent Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service), which forms the centerpiece of today’s concert. Mendelssohn Club also continues its tradition of commissioning new music to be paired with masterworks. The concert opens with the premiere of Andrea Clearfield’s The Golem Psalms, set to a newly written text created by Ellen Frankel and based on the famous legend of the Golem of Prague. A golem is a creature from Jewish folklore, created from mud or clay and brought to life through ritual and mystical incantations. The incantations are derived from the Kabbalistic tradition and feature both words made up from combinations and permutations of the Hebrew alphabet and the sacred, mystical names of God. The golem is often animated through a word of power which is either inscribed on the golem itself or written on a bit of paper and slipped into the golem’s mouth. Golems are completely lifelike, having hair, fingernails, and skin with the warmth and color of human skin, but they lack a soul and the power of speech. They are immensely strong and bound to obey their creator, which they occasionally do with a disastrous single-mindedness. There are many accounts of golems, but the most famous is that of the Golem of Prague and his creator, Rabbi Judah Loew. The creation of golems is bound up with the Jewish mysticism known as the Kabbalah. -

Knopf, 2003. Primary, Elementary A new edition of the 1990 Sydney Taylor Book Award winner, with fresh, colorful illustrations by a renowned illustrator. Excellent for reading aloud, these traditional Jewish tales are framed by a narrative involving a little girl and her grandmother in Grandmother's apartment in Israel several decades ago. Gershator, Phillis . WISE...AND NOT SO WISE: TEN TALES FROM THE RABBIS. Illus. by Alexa Ginsburg. Jewish Publication Society, 2004. Elementary A delightful collection of stories adapted from the Talmud and Midrash. Each one is followed by the author's comments, giving sources, mentioning alternative versions, saying how she changed or embellished the tale, and asking questions that explore both the meaning of the story and how it reflects rabbinical thinking. Attractive illustrations in shades of black and grey are a pleasant addition to stories that beg to be read aloud or told. Goldin, Barbara Diamond. -
The Transition from Yugoslav to Post-Yugoslav Jewry
THE TRANSITION FROM YUGOSLAV TO POST-YUGOSLAV JEWRY Ari Kerkkänen r. INTRODUCTION And to be su¡e, any conceivable collapse of Yugoslav federalism, fragmenting the country according to its various national componenls, would destroy the centralized organization of the Jewish community and seriously hamper its ability to function. Yugoslav Jewry is already in a struggle for survival; any radical change would most likely help to hasten its demise. (Freidsnroich 1984: 57.) Haniet Pass Freiden¡eich foresaw the possible disintegration of Yugoslavia rela- tively early on, in 1984. She concluded that the break-up of Yugoslavia would have serious consequences for the Jewish community. According to Freidenreich (1984: 58), the Yugoslav Jewish community was an example of a community being sus- tained by its organisation. Accordingly, she drew the conclusion that the disintegra- tion of Yugoslavia would result in the disintegmtion of the community's centralized organization, thus seriously hampering its ability to function. A decisive step towards the disintegration of Yugoslavia \l,as the declaration of independence by two Federal Republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugo- slavia, i.e. Slovenia and Croatia, in June, 1991. As a result, war broke out, and the Yugoslav Jewish community was destined to face a radical, historic change. The aim of this a¡ticle is to study the consequences of the disintegration of Yugoslavia for its Jewish community.l Freidenreich's above quoted assessment serves as a hypothesis for this study. In other ,flords, did the disintegration really hasten the demise of the Jewish community? I shall endeavour to answer this ques- tion by focusing on the functions and activities of the local Jewish communities in the newly independent states of the former Yugoslavia.
