Ian Wisekal, a native of Long Island, NY, joined the faculty at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music in 2013. He serves as Principal Oboe of the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra and Crested Butte Music Festival, and previously held the position of Associate Principal Oboe with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. Ian received his bachelor of music degree with high distinction from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY and his master of music degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, earning full scholarships at both institutions. Ian has given master classes throughout the U.S. and abroad. In addition to his students at Lamont, Ian maintains a private teaching studio in Denver. His students have earned scholarships to top music schools, including Eastman, and have performed as soloists and regular members of professional orchestras. Program Notes

Welcome to “Songs Our Mothers (and Others) Taught Us". By far the majority of our pieces were chosen by Chorale members who had specific memories associated with them. You might think that a program drawn from such disparate sources would have no unifying theme, but as I leafed through our selections one word came into my mind: “longing". I hit on this concept from the pieces themselves; you’ll get a whole extra layer of meaning as you hear their related stories. For now, though, here’s a tour through the varieties of that bittersweet emotion: First, there’s a longing for lost childhood. Our first song, named for our program, expresses the feeling perfectly: Songs My Mother Taught Me, which contains the line “oft the tears are flowing . . . from my memory’s treasure.” Billy Joel’s Lullabye/Goodnight, My Angel, written when his seven-year-old daughter asked him, “Where do we go when we die?” also fits this mold. There will be a time when “we’ll all be gone.” But the love of a parent for a child goes on and on. I guess you could call it a case of retroactive longing. Second, there’s a longing for love. The Cherrytones are singingAfrica by the artist Toto, which expresses great anticipation for the arrival of his love on the “12:30 flight.” (Be sure to listen for the sound effects in this one!) Scarborough Fair describes how the speaker “must know if he’s a true love of mine,” by how willing he is to attempt several impossible tasks. Wood tells us about one magical moment when the loved one said “No” to keep the lover from going away. Shenandoah couldn’t be clearer about its emotion, as the very first line says, “Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you.” Not the river, mind you, but the daughter of an Indian chief. And may I say that Polly-Wolly-Doodle is a love song? I think it is! Third, there’s a longing for the eternal and the ineffable. The aspirations expressed inhe T Impossible Dream and Climb Every Mountain speak to the deep desire of humankind to strive after what is, in the end, unattainable. Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace, with its beautiful words from the prayer of St. Francis, tells us of the longing to be part of God’s plan, to live selflessly. EvenThe Battle Hymn of the Republic with its militant, marching rhythms, contains a longing for justice and freedom.

I had to save a few words to talk specifically about our final selection,Oread Farewell by Dan Forrest. What a haunting piece, written on the occasion of Forrest’s departure from the University of Kansas at the end of his degree program there.

-Debi Simons, www.debisimons.com Cherry Creek Chorale Artistic Staff Artistic Director and Conductor, Brian Patrick Leatherman, is enjoying his 23rd year with CCC. During his tenure, the Chorale has doubled in size and greatly expanded its repertoire and collaborative activities. A retired music educator and very active choral conductor, he and Chorale accompanist Cindy Runkel have formed the Highlands Ranch Encore Chorale and the South Suburban Encore Chorale, non-auditioned daytime choirs for adults “55 and better,” providing a professionally run choral experience that highlights the social, physical, and mental benefits of choral singing. Brian is an active choral clinician and adjudicator who has appeared as soloist with numerous choirs and orchestras including the Robert Shaw Festival Singers and the Robert Shaw Festival Chorus. Prior posts include directorship of the Pueblo Choral Society and the Douglas County Children’s Chorus.

The Chorale’s Associate Conductor,Greg Marsh, has been a choral director in Colorado and Arizona for more than 30 years. This is Greg's 22nd year with the Chorale. He holds a Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting from Arizona State University and is currently the vocal music teacher at Columbine High School. Mr. Marsh has frequently been a featured soloist for the Chorale, conducts portions of each Chorale performance and serves as the musical director for the Chorale Showcase Concert. Mr. Marsh is also a past conductor of the Colorado Mormon Chorale.

Cindy Runkel, now in her 9th season as Principal Accompanist, began musical training with her father while in kindergarten, then studied with Elizabeth Pastor, concert pianist and faculty member at The Cleveland Institute of Music. Ms. Runkel served as accompanist for her award-winning high school choral program and received multiple college scholarships, including a full piano scholarship to Miami University (OH), where she accompanied and sang in multiple ensembles, performed in two European concert tours, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree. Cindy and co-founder, Brian Leatherman, are celebrating Season #3 of their two 5280+ Encore Chorales, with 180+ "55 and better" singers!

Assistant Accompanist and Director of The CherryTones, Debbie Johnson grew up playing Beethoven & Chopin and singing Rodgers & Hammerstein! She has taught music and drama in both Denver and Tucson. Previously, she worked with two non-profits in India and founded/directed DenverWorks, an inner-city jobs program. My Dad died December of 2016 but my Mom just died on April 3rd, 2018. She was so looking forward to coming on May 12th. So, this is dedicated to the two of them.
