Press Release: Dance Fusion Competition
PRESS RELEASE: DANCE FUSION COMPETITION GREENACRE SPORTS PARTNERSHIP HOST- DANCE FUSION 2017. The Greenacre Sports Partnership Dance Fusion competition was held on Tuesday 28th March 2017 at Greenacre Academy. The competition saw 221 students, ranging from ages of 7-18 years old, participate from 18 different Primary and Secondary Schools within the partnership. Participants were able to choose their own style of dance, and they were judged for their creativity, skill and technique, personality, timing and overall performance. The results were as follows: Primary category: 1st: St Thomas More RC Primary School 2nd: St Michael’s RC Primary School 3rd: Danecourt Special School Secondary category: 1st: The Victory Academy Group 1 2nd: The Victory Academy Group 2 3rd: Fort Pitt Grammar School KS4 Group We were extremely fortunate to have some special guests to judge the competition. We welcomed Natalie Harris, Kent Sports Event Manager and who also coordinates the Kent School Games Cultural Celebration Event, which last year saw several Dance Fusion contestants perform. Secondly, we had none other than Strictly Come Dancing’s James and Ola Jordan!! All judges provided some fantastic feedback and hugely contributed to making the event a success! Furthermore, we were very grateful for the assistance of eighteen Greenacre Leadership Academy students, and five 6th form students, who supported the event by assisting with stage management, photography, welcoming and ticket collection, backstage management and chaperone duties. These pupils did an excellent job and we couldn’t have done the event without their additional support. The Dance Fusion competition would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the support of several partners. -

There are a huge range of activities which capture the eclectic nature of activities in the school, from Warhammer to a film about the miners’ strike, from winning a Pony Club competition to the school production of Little Shop of Horrors, all life is here! Well done to the students for their achievements, many thanks to the staff and parents for their support and thank you to the Publicity Team for their work in putting together another impressive edition. Best wishes. Mr K.W. Moody - Headteacher Big Bang Fair On Wednesday 27th June 2018, 45 Year 8 students attended the Big Bang Fair in Haywards Heath. Students took part in a range of interactive workshops, shows and activities and got to try new things. They met engineers, scientists, apprentices and other representatives from local employers and PEIs to discover what a future career in STEM might look like. Stands included: Genetically engineered mosquitos to reduce population levels, wave simulations, virtual reality, forestry demonstrations, reptile experiences. Many also took the opportunity to design and build rocket cars which were tested on the day. The students had a great day, trying out new technology and finding out about the latest Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering projects. Bodiam and Battle Abbey Trip As part of their Year 7 History studies, During the trip, the Year 7 students took photos this was a great extension to students’ of these historical buildings and where able to knowledge of the Norman Conquest submit them for a photo competition. -

Issue 18 Spring 2014 WELCOME. Welcome to the HSSP spring newsletter for 2014 – a rather wet one! A belated Happy New Sporting Year to yourselves and your pupils and parents. Many thanks for your school and pupils continued support of P.E. and School Sport in 2013 and of the many teacher training programmes, coaching, volunteering, playing and competitive opportunities we offer your schools. Our primaries are currently delighted with the news that the government has extended the grant offer of the Primary P.E. Premium funding until to summer 2016, (initially it was for 2 years only). So this ring fenced funding £9000 approx. per academic year for every Primary School, and an Ofsted priority, will last for 3 academic years. Furthermore, the current government have promised, to further extend this same amount every year for every Primary School until 2020 as part of the Olympic legacy, if they get elected. The HSSP staff are busy visiting many primary schools offering advice and support to Head Teachers and P.E. Co-ordinators on how to action plan and improve: their P.E. curriculum and quality of teaching and learning for staff and pupils, the health and physical activity levels of less active pupils and sports club and competition opportunities for all pupils. We have 39 out of a possible 45 schools signed up to our services this year and we plan to continue our school sport services for primaries in the future. We are currently reviewing our pricing structure to ensure that we can continue to exist financially beyond summer 2016, as we receive no government funding to help contribute towards the salaries of SSCo’s. -

The main points are summarised below: • Parents complete the Medway common application form (CAF) in accordance with the Medway Co-ordinated Admission Scheme. • The Local Authority will then act as clearing house for the administration of pupils’ preferences. Parents will be informed on 1 March 2021. • The school will also post to parents decisions of the governors on admission and details of the right of appeal against the governors’ decision. The school’s published admission number is 210. At Victory Academy we operate a 'Fair Banding' admissions process to ensure we have a balanced proportion of students from across the whole ability range - a comprehensive intake. Students who wish to apply for a place at Victory Academy must take a Fair Banding test to be considered for admission to the Academy and this will be required if their parents/carers intend to put Victory Academy on the common admissions form. This test is usually a cognitive ability test(s) – it is not a pass or fail test. -

Issue 4 Principal's Newsletter September 2020 I cannot quite believe that September is already upon us, the steel frame is progressing nicely and that the applications window to apply for secondary schools has officially opened! We recognise that this can be both an exciting and apprehensive time for all of us. Year 6 pupils and their parents will be starting to look at the options available to them for secondary schools, even if virtually, and some may be making preparations to sit the Medway Test. In turn schools will be overcoming the challenges of COVID restrictions to still ensure you receive the best possible information to make informed choices. At this point in time you will be having discussions at home about your choices and preferences, considering the curriculum models on offer, the extra curricular clubs, the teaching and behaviour policies and maybe even the uniforms and lunchtime menus! We wanted to ensure that despite not having a building that you were given the opportunity to ask questions to make informed decisions about Leigh Academy Rainham and last week we recorded a video we will be sharing with you all on social media and our website. This interview style video was conducted with Nicola Everett from KMTV. Nicola Everett grew up in Rochester and went to Chapter Secondary School in Strood - the site of the current Strood Academy. She started her radio career after doing work experience at Medway FM in Rochester during her final year at university. She then moved to Invicta FM and was successful in becoming their News Editor. -

Context The Victory Academy is a “rapidly improving school”1 in Chatham, Kent. It is a smaller than the average- sized mixed secondary school. It is in an area where there are grammar schools and as a result, whilst welcoming students of all abilities, the student body tends to have lower prior achievement. The school also has a greater number of students with special educational needs or disabilities than average and a higher number of students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. It is part of the ‘Thinking Schools Academy Trust’ led by The Rochester Grammar School which is a family of schools working together to "improve the life chances of all their children and young people.”2 Evidence Base The University of Exeter received the school’s submission from the Thinking Skills Co-ordinator, Ms Laura Gladstone, evidencing the school’s progress towards meeting the accreditation criteria. Victory Academy School began its journey towards becoming a ‘Thinking School in 2015 when it changed its name and became part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust. The evidence presented on the school’s web site was well-organised and included pictorial evidence of displays and work showing how pupils apply and use the tools to enrich and enhance their learning. -

Your Place at University Finding your way through the university application process A guide for Students Introduction Going to university is an exciting experience. However, the application process can be confusing, with so much information available and so many choices to make. This guide is not intended to provide step by step instructions on how to apply, but is instead a companion for you as you go through the application process. It aims to demystify some of the common areas of confusion and to help you avoid the pitfalls. Some students have to overcome significant barriers to reach university. Many universities view applications from these students in a positive way. They recognise that such applicants must have high levels of motivation and determination to achieve what they have achieved. In researching this guide we talked to staff in universities to understand what it is they really look for in potential students, as well as teachers and tutors in schools and colleges who support students through the process of applying to university. We have also held discussion groups with students who have gone through, or are getting ready to go through, the application process themselves.
