    HUGH WHITEHEAD, THE ORIGINS LARS HESSELGREN Of J PARRISH SMARTGEOMETRY Smartgeometry (SG) was founded in 2001 by former colleagues and friends Hugh Whitehead, Lars Hesselgren and J Parrish as a way to recapture parametric and computational design for architecture. At the time of founding SG they were leaders in the London-based architectural practices Foster + Partners, Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and ArupSport respectively, and were strong proponents of digital design. Each was striving to create architecture through the use of parametric tools and computational methods. Through SG they hoped not only to create new digital tools, but to foster a community that would develop, test and disseminate these ideas of architecture and design to a wider audience. Whitehead founded the Specialist Modelling Group at Foster + Partners in 1998 which has been responsible for a host of innovative buildings and consistently pioneers computational design methods in architectural practice. After years at KPF in London, architect Lars Hesselgren is now the Director of the Computational Design Research Group at PLP Architects. J Parrish is a globally renowned sports stadium designer leading teams to design some of the most iconic stadium projects in the world. After many years at ArupSport, he moved to AECOM where he is currently working on the venues for the Rio Olympic Park. A number of buildings at the University of East Anglia (UEA) were listed in 2003: Suffolk and Norfolk Terrace, both at Grade ll*, and the Teaching Wall and the Library, both at Grade ll. In 2007, a Conservation and Development Strategy for the university was adopted and agreed with English Heritage and Norwich City Council. It acts as a philosophy and guide for development and maintenance works on the campus buildings and landscape. The Crescent Wing addition to the original building is too young to be assessed for listing and is not included in this report. Assessment CONSULTATION The owners, local authority and applicant were consulted on the facts of the assessment, and no responses were received. DISCUSSION The DCMS Principles of Selection (March 2010) stipulate that buildings of less than 30 years old are normally listed only if they are of outstanding quality and under threat.

Annex List Entry Number Name Heritage Category HE Recommendation 1 1447116 Southwark Listing Do not add to List Underground Station Visits Date Visit Type 27 April 2017 Full inspection Context Historic England received an application from the Twentieth Century Society to assess Southwark Underground Station for listing in January 2017. This was superseded by the current listing application from TfL, asking for clarity in the light of proposed development that includes works to improve access to the station at the main, Blackfriars Road, entrance. The Jubilee Line Extension (JLE) Station at Southwark was built in 1994-9 and is subject to the Thirty Year Rule. The DCMS has advised that for buildings of less than 30 years of age, Historic England should assess the threat posed by the current/proposed development scheme to the special architectural and historic interest of the building; then proceed to the full assessment stage only if it is satisfied that there is a demonstrable threat of substantial loss of/harm to that special interest. Buildings of less than thirty years in age will normally only be eligible for listing at the higher grades, II* and I, reflecting their high level of architectural and historic interest. PLANNING HISTORY Southwark Station was designed to carry a superstructure over the entrance hub on Blackfriars Road that was never built.

    Encyclopedia of 20th-century architecture 428 Hopkins’s Patera system, is also exoskeletal but, in contrast with the central spine, is more restrained. Anthony Hunt Associates designed the steel structure, and the lightweight structures unit of Ove Arup and Partners designed the fabric roof. A zoned servicing strategy supports the contrasting spatial and structural characters of the central spine and flanking wings. The winter garden and test station, although weather tight, are conceived as quasi-external spaces; the labs are sealed spaces in which tightly controlled environmental conditions for research can be maintained; and the offices have opening windows and sunshading that can be adjusted by the occupants. The building works as an icon in the heroic modernist tradition and, by addressing human needs, significantly advances the idea of the workplace. Transparency—with fully glazed walls between winter garden, test station, and labs and a glazed external envelope—creates a high degree of visual interaction both within the building and between the building and the outside world. An egalitarian workplace laced together by open meeting spaces and the generosity of the winter garden integrates disparate functions—clean and dirty, quiet and noisy, front and back of house. This social and programmatic integration is reiterated in the marriage of orthogonal and curvilinear geometries, of compressive and tensile structures, and of rational Miesian discipline with more exuberant expressionism. This building for Schlumberger was Michael Hopkins’s first use of a tensile fabric structure and the first large-scale architectural use of Teflon-coated fabric in the United Kingdom. Hopkins would further explore fabric structures in subsequent projects including the Mound Stand at Lord’s Cricket Ground (1987), the amenity building and ventilation towers at Inland Revenue (1995), and the Younger Universe Pavilion in Edinburgh (1998).
