In the intervening years, during which environmental design has more and more been seen as sustainable design (for good earth preserving reasons), two things have happened. Most buildings have more or less reluctantly taken on board ever increasing legal requirements for greater insulation (heat and sound), reduced glazing, improved orientation, the use of less wasteful materials and more natural ventilation; while all these things are not seen as having any implications for the architectural language that is used. This is the eternal no change school of behaviour. But a minority have struggled to find a new or revised architectural expression to allow for sustainable environmental conditions. Architects, engineers and designers have searched for a new aesthetic for such things as solar shading, load bearing masonry, green wood building, natural (chimney effect) ventilation, wind and photo- voltaic power generation, passive solar gain, and so on. For it is hard to see how such considerations might be incorporated without a change in the way that we think about architecture. It is hard to see how to make that change without thinking about the composition of architecture in a more expressive way than is common today. If we are to make this move towards responsive expres- sionism we will need all the help we can get from clear thinking, cool headed environmental designers. It is here that this book Environmental Design has a most important part to play. It is clear, logical, well illustrated and good to read; and it has the great quality of all profound work – it is easy to understand. Now let us use it to help us with our architecture. Edward Cullinan January 2005 PREFACE We here present another edition of this book. I have a feeling of urgency. The economies of the world are growing at an unprecedented rate and delivering the benefits of industrialisation in a way that is necessary to lead to a stable global population during this century. This growth will be a disaster if it carries an equivalent emission of carbon dioxide. During this century architecture must reduce the demand for energy while maintaining the benefits of health and comfort. This book provides the basic information to implement the new needs. ‘Good luck!’ is not enough. Take up the challenge. Physics and units The SI (Système Internationale) unit of force is the newton and the unit of work (force times distance) is the newton-metre, also defined as a joule. Work and energy have the same units. Power is the amount of energy expended (or work done) per unit time – one joule per second is a watt.

    HUGH WHITEHEAD, THE ORIGINS LARS HESSELGREN Of J PARRISH SMARTGEOMETRY Smartgeometry (SG) was founded in 2001 by former colleagues and friends Hugh Whitehead, Lars Hesselgren and J Parrish as a way to recapture parametric and computational design for architecture. At the time of founding SG they were leaders in the London-based architectural practices Foster + Partners, Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and ArupSport respectively, and were strong proponents of digital design. Each was striving to create architecture through the use of parametric tools and computational methods. Through SG they hoped not only to create new digital tools, but to foster a community that would develop, test and disseminate these ideas of architecture and design to a wider audience. Whitehead founded the Specialist Modelling Group at Foster + Partners in 1998 which has been responsible for a host of innovative buildings and consistently pioneers computational design methods in architectural practice. After years at KPF in London, architect Lars Hesselgren is now the Director of the Computational Design Research Group at PLP Architects. J Parrish is a globally renowned sports stadium designer leading teams to design some of the most iconic stadium projects in the world. After many years at ArupSport, he moved to AECOM where he is currently working on the venues for the Rio Olympic Park. Not since the advent of structural steel has there been such a dramatic shift in aesthetics, form and construction. The reason for this change in buildings is the recent evolution of computer design, analysis and construction software. Forms that were once impossible to imagine, let alone design and construct, are now possible. Engineers are playing an increasingly important role in this achievement. Of great interest to me as a university instructor teaching design to architectural engineering students, is a comprehensive chart (‘Engineer’s Atlas’) in the AR September issue listing the old and new famous names in Architectural Engineering of the last century. This is the first time that I have come across such a list and it occurred to me that this would be good material to share academically with faculty and students.

A number of buildings at the University of East Anglia (UEA) were listed in 2003: Suffolk and Norfolk Terrace, both at Grade ll*, and the Teaching Wall and the Library, both at Grade ll. In 2007, a Conservation and Development Strategy for the university was adopted and agreed with English Heritage and Norwich City Council. It acts as a philosophy and guide for development and maintenance works on the campus buildings and landscape. The Crescent Wing addition to the original building is too young to be assessed for listing and is not included in this report. Assessment CONSULTATION The owners, local authority and applicant were consulted on the facts of the assessment, and no responses were received. DISCUSSION The DCMS Principles of Selection (March 2010) stipulate that buildings of less than 30 years old are normally listed only if they are of outstanding quality and under threat.
