Out of hundreds of submissions only 15 were selected. Having five students recognized from our school is a great honor and accomplishment. Their designs and names will be digitally scanned, enlarged, and permanently sand-blasted into 20” granite stone pavers. The completed pavers will be placed in Fort Collins sidewalks. Keep an eye out for them when you’re in Old Town! Congratulations to FCHS freshman Stephen New, who was honored at the UNC State Math Contest Banquet on April 5th! Stephen placed 1st in PSD and 18th overall at the contest this year. The University of Northern Colorado State Math Contest was founded in 1992 by Richard Grassl and has been directed since 2011-12 by Ricardo and Katie Diaz. Find our Pillars of Excellence Weekly Winners later in this newsletter! FCHS Track and Field athletes participated in the Arcadia Invitational in Los Angeles, California on April 11-12, joining 1100 national elite performances. To put that in perspective, there were only 64 national elite performances at the recent Mullen Invitational in Denver. Arcadia is truly the meet where national records are set. Luke Sheesley started our weekend with a win in the rated 3 3200m run with a time of 9:07.99. This was almost a 25-second personal best for Luke, and now ranks him 17th all-time in the state of Colorado according to the Rutherford list of best marks by Colorado High School Athletes over the past 25 years! Luke then doubled back into the mile on Saturday morning which is a little longer than the 1600m. He ran a personal best 4:17.58 to place 4th in this heat! Audra Koopman was next with a very solid performance in the 100m with a time of 12.46, placing 4th in her heat. Then Audra used some of that momentum to take 2nd in the Seeded Long Jump with a personal best jump of 18'4.5", which was the 10th- best long jump in the entire meet and only 1.5" off our school record. Josie Natrasevschi experienced some intense competition in the Discus and the Shot Put, but it just wasn't her day. Josie certainly has bragging rights, though: Her throw of 154'7" at the Poudre Invitational ranks her 8th in the nation and was the 6th best throw all time by a Colorado athlete, according to the Rutherford List. Lauren Gregory ended our 2014 Arcadia Invitational with an amazing performance in the women's invitational 3200m. Lauren ran 10:15.34, placing 6th in her heat, which was a 40-second personal best. Her time was also the 3rd-fastest time ever run by a Colorado athlete, according to the Rutherford list, and currently ranks her 7th in the nation! Fort Collins High School's tradition of excellence in Track and Field continues! Over the last two years, FCHS 3-D Design Art Students have been involved with a global project called One Million Bones. Our students created over 250 clay bones which were sent to Washington, DC. On June 8th, 2013, over one million hand-made bones were laid on the National Mall as a visible petition to raise awareness for the MAY 2014 Fort Collins High School Newsletter PAGE 3 Notes from our Principal, Mark Eversole ongoing genocide and mass atrocities that are accruing Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burma, Somalia and Syria. The hand-made bones -- crafted by students, educators, artists, and activists from around the word -- were laid out as a striking symbol of our common humanity. Our students were very excited to be part of this project. They really benefited from taking a step back, seeing the big picture and actively doing their part to raise awareness by making the world a better place. Find more information here: http://www.onemillionbones.org/ The FCHS History Club sent two teams of students to compete in the National History Bowl Competition in Arlington, VA, on April 26. Congratulations to our students: Burke Snowden, Susan Zheng, Suraj Renganethan, Antonio Calderon, and Daniel Scher. Thanks to everyone involved in Mr. FCHS this year. Congratulations to our 2014 Mr. FCHS, Jackson Bright, Mr. Let’s Just Be Friends. Over $2,000 dollars was raised to support the FCHS AfterProm. Thank you for supporting FCHS students and staff! The Pillars of Excellence initiative provides students and staff with behavioral expectations articulating the attributes that all Lambkins should exhibit: Acceptance, Pride, Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility. The entire staff at FCHS recognizes students and adults who exemplify positive behaviors by handing out Clyde Kudos. These coupons are randomly drawn weekly; selected Lambkins are publicly recognized and awarded a prize. Consistent reinforcement of the qualities and behaviors presented by the Pillars of Excellence makes FCHS a place where excellence is not only expected, but is also taught, modeled, and rewarded. 4th Quarter Student Pillars of Excellence Award Winners!
