IB-MYP Updates February 2017

The students at CLPMS traveled to the Museum of Nature and Science on January 23, 2017. The 6th graders traveled through various Native American Indian Cultures, 7th graders experienced Expedition Health and 8th graders explored Space Odyssey. In addition to the grade specific exhibits, each group decided on another exhibit of their choice. Other exhibits of choice included: Prehistoric Journey, Gems and Minerals, Mummies, South America, and North American Wildlife.

For many students and several staff this was their first time to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and it was exciting to share this experience with them. Students and staff enjoyed the day, and we look forward to our next field trip. FEBRUARY 2017 Cache La Poudre Middle School Newsletter PAGE 4

IB-MYP Learner Profile February 2017 The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The ten IB Learner Profiles are Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Thinker, Communicator, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-taker, Balanced, and Reflective.

Each month, teachers working in their grade-level teams nominate two students from each grade who demonstrate the qualities of the monthly Learner Profile focus. For January 2017, the Learner Profile was Communicator. Communicators are able to understand and express themselves confidently in more than one language. They work well and enthusiastically in team situations.

The students will receive a certificate acknowledging their nomination and their picture will be added to the Learner Profile Bulletin Board near the Counseling Office.

For the month of January 2017, the staff recognized the following students for the Learner Profile: Communicator – Callia Domanik, Taylor Fisher, Wyatt Grimmer, Kylie Jantz, Reece MacKinney, Caden Streeter.

Athletics Update As a new season begins, I encourage you to read the attached PCA article on New Year’s Resolutions for Youth and High School Athletes. We can help make connections to our everyday school-wide language of RRRespect. We Respect Ourselves by resolving to improve ourselves as players, Respect Each Other by resolving to improve our teammates, and Respect Our Environment by resolving to improve our sport.

We’re excited about our girls basketball and wrestling teams this season. We’ll continue concessions as long as we have a parent volunteer. Please use the link to sign up. http://signup.com/go/5gQc8P

The money earned helps provide athletic equipment and additional team items, such as warmups, for our athletes. Having concessions also improves the atmosphere at home contests. Thank you for your support!

It’s crazy to think that we are already preparing for Spring sports. Please make sure that your child has a current physical and participates in pre-season.

As always… call, email or stop by if you have any questions!

In case you have not made (or kept!) any New Year’s Resolutions, Positive Coaching Alliance suggests some that will help you grow as a Triple-Impact Competitor®, improving yourself, your teammates and your sport as a whole. We know from experience how hard it is to maintain New Year’s Resolutions. However, your love for your sport can help you keep your commitment.

Resolutions to Improve Myself I resolve… … to master my sport by tending to the ELM Tree of Mastery, where ELM stands for Effort, Learning and Mistakes are OK. …to put forth my best Effort in every practice and competition. …to Learn by studying my sport, seeking advice from my coaches, parents and teammates and watching others perform. …to see Mistakes as a natural result of striving to improve so that I will persist.

Resolutions to Improve My Teammates I resolve… …to Fill the Emotional Tanks of my teammates, because they have “emotional tanks” just as cars have gas tanks, and empty tanks can take us nowhere, but full tanks can take us anywhere. …to use a “Buddy System,” finding the teammate each day who needs a little extra lift and filling his or her Emotional Tank. …to use the “Magic Ratio” of five specific, truthful praises for each constructive criticism.

Resolutions to Improve My Sport I resolve…

…to get to the ROOTS of a positive sports experience, where ROOTS stands for respecting Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates and Self. …to compete by the Rules, even when it's possible to break them without getting caught, because I understand that victory without honor has no value. …to stay mindful that without a worthy Opponent, we would have no sport. …to treat Officials respectfully, remembering that they have been selected and trained to keep us safe and enforce the rules of our sport. … to hold my Teammates in the highest esteem, realizing that I represent them, too.

…to show Self-respect by livingFor up more to my Resources, own standards visit: even www.PCADevZone.org if those around me do not. For more information on Positive Coaching Alliance, visit: www.PositiveCoach.org
