Re: Temporary Closure of Bridge Application- Non-opposition Letter Manatee County

Dear Secretary Thibault:

As required through the application process for the Temporary Closure of State applications, please accept this letter of non-opposition to the proposed Skyway Bridge Charity Run scheduled for March 1, 2020, and sponsored by the Armed Forces Families Foundation. As did last year's run, it is our understanding that the event will require a closure of the Skyway Bridge from 3:30 am to 11 :00 am on Sunday, March 1, 2020.

We have been impressed with the representatives of the Armed Forces Families Foundation for their attention to detail and pre-planning of this event. The two previous years' events were very successful with more than 12,000 runners participating in 2018 and approximately 7,500 runners in 2019. Safety and security for an event and use of the Skyway Bridge are of utmost importance. The Foundation has demonstrated their ability to manage an event of this magnitude and to hold the safety of the runners as a top priority.

We look forward to the success of the 2020 run and the ability to improve infrastructure projects of the families it is designated to assist that serve our country in the armed forces.

Should you need additional information, please advise.

Background Discussion

To date, the Sunshine Skyway 10K Bridge Run has raised more than $1.2 million for the Armed Forces Families Foundation in its first two years.

Manatee County was contacted by Matthew Blair of the Armed Forces Foundation requesting a letter of non- opposition for the proposed third year of the 10K Skyway Bridge Run planned for March 1, 2020.

A requirement exists that any jurisdiction adjacent to the Skyway Bridge provide a letter of non-opposition to the FDOT Secretary if they are in favor of the event.

Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties have provided their letters of non-opposition to the Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Michael Dew in support of the event.

The event is being planned for a Sunday morning with the closure of the northbound lanes scheduled for 3:30 a.m. and lasting until 11:00 a.m. Runners would be transported by bus from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg to the starting point in Terra Ceia in Manatee County.

Runners will head north over the bridge with a termination of the run at the north rest area, a distance of 6.2 miles.

The Armed Forces Families Foundation is a 501(c)3, non profit organization that was established to help give families of service men and women a sense of community support.

100% of all donations received are used solely for structural projects to benefit military families. Additionally, all funds raised remain local.
