    KATHOLIEKE UNIVERSITEIT LEUVEN FACULTEIT LETTEREN MASTER IN DE GESCHIEDENIS Het fenomeen “Poeske” Scherens Promotor Masterproef Prof. dr. D. VANYSACKER ingediend door HERPELINCK FRAN Leuven 2010-2011 Voorwoord Alsof hij soms even tot leven kwam, in een literaire wielerflits. Alsof hij soms even aan de einder voorbijvloog, in een welgemikte ‘kattensprong’. Jef “Poeske” Scherens is al even niet meer onder ons, maar zijn sportieve adem, evenals de ziel van zijn tijdsperiode, zijn vervat in honderden documenten, in archieven overal te lande, in privé-collecties, in oude kranten en tijdschriften. Het afgelopen jaar was er een van puzzelwerk. Puzzelstukjes vinden, was geen probleem. Punt was te kijken welk stukje het meest authentiek was. Vele stukjes blonken immers buitensporig fel. Jef “Poeske” Scherens was een overstijgende persoonlijkheid, die zowel op als naast de fiets wist te fascineren. Als sprintende baanwielrenner kende hij in de periode tussen de Twee Wereldoorlogen, het interbellum van de twintigste eeuw, veruit zijn gelijke niet. Scherens was als ‘fenomeen’ een ‘idool’, die supporters deed juichen, journalisten in de pen deed kruipen en lyrische reacties aan hen ontlokte. In een fervente poging op zoek te gaan naar een kern van waarheid en tijdsgevoel, was het vaak noodzakelijk mezelf te berispen, wanneer enthousiasme primeerde op kritische zin. Het leven van Jef Scherens rolt zich dan ook uit als een lofdicht, dat doorheen de jaren haast niet aan charme heeft ingeboet. Na een intensieve kennismaking met “Poeske”, wielerheld en volksfiguur, was ik anderzijds terdege verwonderd . De laatste decennia kenden wielerbelangstelling en ‘koersliteratuur’ een enorme hausse . Kronieken, biografieën en poëtische werken worden gekleurd door noeste renners en wervelende persoonlijkheden - al kan er sprake zijn van een chronologische en pragmatische richtlijn.

Un chêne dont la forme était tordue et un peu laide, à force, sans doute, d’avoir été rabattu et étêté dans le but de le rajeunir. Les feuilles repoussaient directement en touffe sur les gros moignons de bois, comme une mauvaise coupe de cheveux, dont on espérait que la repousse ne soit pas trop longue… Par Armande Jammes 18 DÉCEMBRE 2017 Le chêne, avais-je appris, était devenu un symbole de l’Alle- magne pendant les guerres napoléoniennes. Lors de la const- ruction en 1913 du premier stade olympique de Berlin en 1913 (pour des jeux qui n’eurent jamais lieu) on en avait plan- té un que l’on avait baptisé Chêne de Von Podbielski en l’hon- neur d’un homme Viktor Von Podbielski qui avait servi la cause du sport allemand. À la construction du nouveau stade en 1936, on avait apparemment conservé l’un des arbres sans être sûr que ce fut le bon. Son positionnement juste à droite après le passage des grilles était un peu étrange au sein de ce lieu dont le dessin était entièrement maîtrisé. Le comité olym- pique avait décidé que chaque vainqueur recevrait en plus de sa médaille, une couronne de feuilles de chêne, ainsi qu’un jeune plant d’un an.     BESTANDSVERZEICHNIS DES ARCHIVS FREDY BUDZINSKI 1 VORWORT Die Sammlung von Fredy Budzinski bestand ursprünglich aus mehr als 150 Mappen, über 60 Aktenordnern, Büchern, Zeitschriften, weiteren Sammelheftern sowie losen Beständen aus verschiedenen Programmheften, Fotos und Zeichnungen. Sie beinhaltet hauptsächlich Fotos und Dokumente zur Geschichte des Radsports und des Fahrrades von ca. 1890 bis in die 60er Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Bahnradsport von den 1890er bis in die 1920er Jahre. In seinen letzten Lebensjahrzenten versuchte Budzinski, seine Sammlung zu verkaufen. So verhandelte er 1955 mit dem Baseler Sportmuseum, allerdings erfolglos: „Ich hätte wohl den Glauben, die Schweiz schwämme im Gelde und das Museum könne die ‚horrende’ Forderung anerkennen, die ich gestellt hätte für ‚ein paar 60 Jahre alte Bücher’.“1 Daraufhin stellte er seine Bemühungen wieder ein, wie er Diem schrieb: „Da ich auch in anderen Fällen auf den Glauben [...] gestoßen bin, ich müsse [...] meine Bücher als Altpapier verkaufen, habe ich beschlossen, die Verfügung über mein Archiv meinen Erben zu überlassen.[...] Bei Ihnen dürfte ich Verständnis für meine Einstellung finden, dass ich neben dem antiquarischen Wert auch den Verlust in Rechnung stellen darf, der mir durch Auswertung des Inhalts der Bände durch andere Schriftsteller erwachsen könnte.“2 Ein halbes Jahr später bot Budzinski seinen Nachlass unentgeltlich Diem und somit der Sporthochschule in Köln an. Eine Antwort Diems auf dieses erste Angebot ist nicht bekannt. Nach Budzinskis Tod zeigte keine Berliner Institution Interesse an dem umfangreichen Nachlass, der ganz besonders die Radsportgeschichte der Hauptstadt beleuchtete, „was bedauerlich war“, so der Berliner Sportjournalist Gerd Reimann. Schließlich verkaufte die Familie die Sammlung aus Büchern, Dokumenten und Fotos doch an die Deutsche Sporthochschule in Köln.
