    KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY THE HON JOHN FAHEY AC PRESIDENT WORLD ANTI-DOPING AGENCY TO THE ANZSLA CONFERENCE, MELBOURNE THURSDAY, 16 OCTOBER, 2008 Thank you for the opportunity to share some time and some thoughts with you this morning on a subject which has occupied a large slice of my life over the past 12 months. It is not hard to recall the reason why I was attracted to a volunteer position with an International organisation that is based in Montreal, which is almost as far as you can get from my home town of Bowral in NSW. I have always been attracted to the concept of fair play. It is the very essence of sport, if not the most fundamental principle governing our lives. Doping is a triple threat: to athlete safety, to sport integrity, and to greater public health. I am old enough to recall some of the sporting events at international level during the seventies and eighties where the build of athletes, both male and female, did not resemble the stereotype for the event and where all of us had suspicions something was happening that had nothing to do with normal training and strength-building exercises. Many of us in those days believed something was radically wrong. I still vividly recall the comparison in physique between Australia’s Raelene Boyle and the powerful, muscular East German Renate Stecher as they lined up for the start of the 200 metre Final in Munich in 1972. But despite the suspicions and concerns of millions of sports followers around the world, nothing was done by officialdom to address what appeared to be an obvious problem.

VANYSACKER ingediend door HERPELINCK FRAN Leuven 2010-2011 Voorwoord Alsof hij soms even tot leven kwam, in een literaire wielerflits. Alsof hij soms even aan de einder voorbijvloog, in een welgemikte ‘kattensprong’. Jef “Poeske” Scherens is al even niet meer onder ons, maar zijn sportieve adem, evenals de ziel van zijn tijdsperiode, zijn vervat in honderden documenten, in archieven overal te lande, in privé-collecties, in oude kranten en tijdschriften. Het afgelopen jaar was er een van puzzelwerk. Puzzelstukjes vinden, was geen probleem. Punt was te kijken welk stukje het meest authentiek was. Vele stukjes blonken immers buitensporig fel. Jef “Poeske” Scherens was een overstijgende persoonlijkheid, die zowel op als naast de fiets wist te fascineren. Als sprintende baanwielrenner kende hij in de periode tussen de Twee Wereldoorlogen, het interbellum van de twintigste eeuw, veruit zijn gelijke niet. Scherens was als ‘fenomeen’ een ‘idool’, die supporters deed juichen, journalisten in de pen deed kruipen en lyrische reacties aan hen ontlokte. In een fervente poging op zoek te gaan naar een kern van waarheid en tijdsgevoel, was het vaak noodzakelijk mezelf te berispen, wanneer enthousiasme primeerde op kritische zin. Het leven van Jef Scherens rolt zich dan ook uit als een lofdicht, dat doorheen de jaren haast niet aan charme heeft ingeboet. Na een intensieve kennismaking met “Poeske”, wielerheld en volksfiguur, was ik anderzijds terdege verwonderd . De laatste decennia kenden wielerbelangstelling en ‘koersliteratuur’ een enorme hausse . Kronieken, biografieën en poëtische werken worden gekleurd door noeste renners en wervelende persoonlijkheden - al kan er sprake zijn van een chronologische en pragmatische richtlijn.

    NEWS 10TH EDITION APRIL 2005 CHAIRMAN’S ONE YEAR TO GO MESSAGE As we celebrate one year to go until the Opening Ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, it is timely to reflect on signifcant milestones that have occurred in the first few months of 2005. During January, Federal Treasurer the Hon. Peter Costello launched the Melbourne 2006 Volunteer Program at Melbourne’s Federation Square. The program received an overwhelming response, with applications closing just a week later as subscription levels of 20,000 were reached. The Volunteer launch in January was followed by the unveiling of the Queen’s Baton Relay international route by Prime Minister John Howard and Victorian Premier Steve Bracks in Canberra on 10 February. At Buckingham Palace, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II presided over the ceremony that launched the innovative Baton on the longest, most inclusive relay in Commonwealth Games history, covering over 180,000 km and every ocean and continent in the world. We were also delighted to welcome several new sponsors to the Commonwealth Games Family. Telstra became the fourth M2006 Partner, while Nestlé Peters were welcomed as a Games Sponsor.
