The importance of universities as knowledge- creating entities and crucial actors in innovation systems has been demonstrated in many different empirical contexts. However, despite the growing body of scholarly work, many aspects of knowledge transfer from universities to the private sector are only imperfectly understood. What relationships and potential synergies exist between individual transfer channels such as publications, academic entrepreneurship, R&D collaboration, or graduate and researcher mobility? Under which conditions and to what extent is knowledge transfer geographically bounded, and how broad is its geographic reach?
