PREFACE Since ever dwellers on the Continent were first able to navigate the ocean, the isles of Great Britain and Ireland must have been objects which excited their supreme interest. To this we owe in part the com- ing of our own early ancestors to these isles. But while we have histories which inform us of the several historic invasions, they all seem to me to belittle far too much the influence of the Norse Invasions in particular. This error I would fain correct, so far as regards Celtic Scotland.

Comics as a Medium dor Inquiry: Urban Students (Re-)Designing Critical Social Worlds Abstract Literacy scholars have argued that curricular remediation marginalizes the dynamic meaning-making practices of urban youth and ignores contemporary definitions of literacy as multimodal, socially situated, and tied to people's identities as members of cultural communities. For this reason, it is imperative that school-based literacy research unsettle status quos by foregrounding the sophisticated practices that urban students enact as a result, and in spite of, the marginalization they manage in educational settings. A hopeful site for honoring the knowledge of urban students is the nexus of alternative learning spaces that have taken on increased significance in ouths'y lives. Many of these spaces focus on young people's engagements with new literacies, multimodalities, the arts, and popular media, taking the stance that students' interests are inherently intellectual. The Cabrini Comics Inquiry Community (CCIC), located in a K-8 Catholic school in South Philadelphia, is one such space.

  • Titanic Jurisprudence in United States Federal Court
Do Not Delete 7/15/2012 5:16 PM LIABILITY AND SALVAGE: TITANIC JURISPRUDENCE IN UNITED STATES FEDERAL COURT by Matthew E. Zekala∗ On May 31, 1911, the R.M.S Titanic was launched from the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. On August 15, 2011, the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia awarded R.M.S. Titanic, Inc., an in specie salvage award for artifacts recovered from the wreck of the Titanic. One hundred years after its launch, the Titanic still is perhaps the most famous ship in modern history and, despite its British ownership and loss in international waters, the sinking and salvage of the ship has been heavily litigated in United States courts. This Comment examines the legal history of the Titanic’s admiralty jurisprudence in United States federal courts, beginning with the shipowner’s effort to limit its liability, and culminating with an analysis of the eighteen-year litigation that led to the salvage award. This Comment argues that public policy is best served by court-supervised salvage awards and that recovery and restoration of historical artifacts is neither “exploitation” nor “grave robbing” as some detractors have maintained. Salvors such as R.M.S. Titanic, Inc., should be recognized for performing a valuable public service—the preservation of cultural treasures that otherwise would be lost to the natural elements—through judicially supervised compensation that provides adequate protection for wreck sites and recovered artifacts. As newer and better underwater exploration technology becomes available, more wrecks will be discovered and known wrecks that currently are inaccessible may be explored.

  • Guide to Gaelic Origins of Place Names in Britain
Guide to Gaelic origins of place names in Britain NOTE: This booklet is one of a series of 4 booklets which cover the language origins of place names in Britain for Gaelic, Scandinavian, Scots and Welsh. The booklets can be downloaded from the Ordnance Survey web site at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk as PDF files. November 2005 The background to the creation of this guide Early in the 20th century, Ordnance Survey issued a small pamphlet, The most common Gaelic words used on the Ordnance Survey Maps, for use with the one-inch maps of Scotland. In 1935, the Board of Celtic Studies and the University of Wales compiled a similar booklet, The most common Welsh words used on the Ordnance Survey Maps, for use with maps of Wales. This was reprinted in 1949. Later it was decided to increase the scope of the Gaelic names pamphlet, so the Scottish Geographical Society undertook a complete recompilation and published an enlarged edition in 1951 which included a list of Scandinavian elements used in Scottish place names. In 1968, Ordnance Survey produced an A5 booklet, Place names on maps of Scotland and Wales, which combined revised versions of both earlier publications. The booklet underwent several reprints, with the last reprint published in 1995. In the booklet, Ordnance Survey thanked Dr W F H Nicolaisen of the University of Edinburgh's School of Scottish Studies for his advice on the Gaelic and Scandinavian elements, William Matheson, senior lecturer in the Department of Celtic Studies at the University of Edinburgh for the revised guide to Gaelic pronunciation, and the Board of Celtic Studies of the University of Wales for their help with the Welsh glossary.
