Broadstone Middle School Admissions consultation For entry into Years 5 and 7 in 2020

This consultation paper sets out proposed changes to the admission arrangements to Broadstone Middle School for Year 5 and Year 7 students in September 2020. It also outlines the consultation process and how interested parties can respond to this consultation. A copy of this document and the draft Admission Policy for September 2020 entry can be found on the school website http://www.bmsweb.co.uk/middle-school What is changing?

Broadstone Middle School is proposing to introduce a point of entry into Year 7 in addition to the existing point of entry to Year 5. Why is the school proposing this change?

The number of 11 Year old pupils in the Borough of is expected to rise significantly within the next two years. The Borough’s pupil place planning team has been working with school leaders and council officers to ensure that there will be enough Year 7 pupil places available to meet this demand. New accommodation is being built to enable 2 forms of entry to be added to the site. In addition, it will be important that Year 7 classes are full in all of the Borough’s other schools.

Currently, there is no mechanism in the normal admissions round for parents to request a Year 7 school place at Broadstone Middle School. At its meeting of 27 June 2018, the Borough’s Secondary Schools Options Steering Group agreed a plan which would see 17 Year 7 places being offered at Broadstone Middle School each year. This number, when added to the Published Admission Number (PAN) of 163 in Years 5 and 6, would enable the school to operate with 180 pupils in each of Years 7 and 8.

Broadstone Middle School is able to accommodate this small increase in pupil numbers in its existing buildings. At the end of Year 8, the majority of Broadstone pupils move on to Corfe Hills School, which works closely with the Middle School to ensure curriculum continuity and progression. Corfe Hills School will also be able to accommodate this small increase in pupil numbers in its existing buildings when they reach Year 9. There are no plans to increase the Published Admission Number in Years 5 and 6.

Additional minor changes

A new oversubscription criterion has been included at the request of the Minister for Education to include children who were previously in state care outside of England, and have ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted.

The previous definition of what is meant by home address has been changed in light of advice from the Office of the Schools Adjudicator.

How can I express my opinion on the changes?
